Procession of the Saints

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This music is in celebration of and tribute to our New Orleans
Saints victory of the 2010 Super Bowl.

Who Dat Band? This is performed by my band, the French Market Jazz Band recorded
some years back. The sound effects of crowd noises at the end are the sounds of last night that poured
into my home from the streets of the French Quarter, recorded on the iMac right after the win. We were honored to have
on this session Johnny Mince who played clarinet and lead alto sax in the original
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. All of the other musicians were native New Orleanians,
including me on trombone and some vocals.

Grat music
I'll put aside the fact that I don't like football and that my girlfriend lost us money betting on the game. This is a superb piece of music in every way. There is nothing amateur about this. Even the mastering is perfection. Why don't you have a record deal?

Johnny Mince...
...wow...this is the real deal, Scotty...as are your Saints. I used to like them when they had Manning, Muncie, and some other great running back.
Congrats...and thanks for the cool tune. I used to hang out in the French Quarter, a couple of summers, years ago. This brings it all back to me...

as much as we try
my MIDI-sampled world can NEVER even come close to the heart-wrenchingly delicious music that comes from real (and extremely talented) musicians. The composition is awesome, I love the slow-then-regular rendition, and the embellishments, esPecially the beloved clarinet, are just mind-blowing. Absolutely a gem here, Scotty. Great recording & mix as well, not easy to do. The applause and "field-recording" crowd noise fit right in here. Bravo!

Drakonis

WOW! To hear your band! What a great thing. I love it. Such a free and feel-full intro-part. And such a happy-jazz second part. My feet wont be still. Wanna get up and dance and laugh and have a good time. Yod'd be certain I'd do if I was there. I just love it!

Wow!
I have to admit I come across this genre only in remixed fashion (a la 'Wax Tailor' or 'Amon Tobin'). That's referring to the first half.

The originality of the arrangement, subtle touches from the musicians and overall combination of instruments is outstanding.

The second half - bursting with energy, words fail me, but what a precise performance and recording.

The REAL deal!
Nawlins music at its finest here -- BRAVO to all!

I love the slow/minor treatment in the first half, followed by the upbeat march in the traditional major key.

I feel like I'm sitting right there in the French Quarter listening to y'all.

What a wonderfully tight band, full of spirit! Everyone was obviously having a good time on this.

The crowd noises at the end, from such recent Superbowl history, is a brilliant touch.

This was superb! Johnny Mince played with Dorsey almost from the beginning (I am very familiar with his work and happy to know he's still around). What a thrill this must have been for him. Thanks for posting this!

Winners and losers
This, to my untrained ear, is musical excellence personified. A great post.

It's amazing how music can become an integral part of the celebration of a momentuous event, as certainly the Saints' victory in the Super Bowl came to be viewed, with wider ramifications in the post-Katerina era than simply winning the big football game. I think this piece confidently demonstrates that the music traditions of a great city are not only still vividly functioning, but they will continue to endure and flourish.

Incidentally, I also wrote and recorded a song following a Saints triumph. However, it was a piece of music that, instead of celebrating the thrill of victory, it lamented the agony of defeat - after the Vikings lost the playoff game in the Super Dome. Called "Bret Favre's Blues," it, too, was influenced by the New Orleans tradition of the blues. I mention this simply to note that music can serve us to celebrate or console on both sides of the score of a contest.

French Market Jazz Band
The New Orleans Sound is very very unique. I never listened to it until now. And I am blown. A much different sound than that of New York and Chicago. Although Chicago has some similar grooves. I just must listen and learn now!
