The Death of Gaia

Description
Some cultures believe that the earth is a living organism. There are many names for the living mother earth; my favorite is Gaia. If the earth is a living being then we are parasites living off of the host. The only problem with that is that often times the host eventually dies from the excessive needs of the parasite.

I'm usually not to into writing protest songs but the message fits the song pretty well.

Anyway, this is just a hard rocker.

I like doing two guitar parts; I have two amps that compliment each other well for this purpose.

Guitar #1: Mesa Boogie 5/50 Express tube amp
Guitar #2: Peavey VYPYR 120 6L6 tube amp
Bass: Good Ol' Fender P Bass plugged right into the UX2 interface
Bluetube preamp for vocals

Lyrics
The Death of Gaia

The living mother
Giver and provider
Scarred by greed
Taking more than we need
Scarring the land
By our many hands
Souring the air
Without much care

(Chorus)
She dies
Our lives
She breaks
Our stakes

The population’s needs
It greatly exceeds
The gifts of the mother
So we fight one another
We ravage the land
By our own hand
What was once lush
Is now just sand

Harmony is lost
At a terrible cost
Our numbers exceed
The mother bleeds
The balance shattered
The environment battered
The threshold crossed
At tremendous cost

Glaciers in recession
It’s got some attention
Water is spoiled
Efforts are all foiled
Her beauty is fleeting
From all of the beatings
We can’t stop the madness
Escalating the sadness

Change must occur now
It’s the only way how
The mother will be all right
From us the parasites
We need to stop our greed
Take only what we need
No longer in excess
To us the final test

parasites
And then sometimes the host realizes that the parasite has to go and rolls in the mud or takes a soak in the lake, bye bye vermin. We worry that we are killing the planet. This planet will live much longer than we. Conceited and just a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things. This number takes no prisoners. Amp choices right on the money. Lyrics a testimony. Huge and epic.

for the listen. I'm getting better at recording, but I still wish that I knew the sweet spot of mic placement on my cabinets. I vary it a little each time. Someday I'll figure it out.

Pachamama
Is the name the Inca's give to the Mother Earth. I like that one too. As a side note is almost incredible the native people of South America used the same word than their European conquerors for mother. A very ancient term for sure.
There's a forest, somewhere in the US I think (I just checked is near you!), that it's only one big organism, each tree connected to the others by their roots. Scientists say that's the largest known living organism. I think they are missing something as large as the Earth.
But my perception is that the planet won't die, just the humans, or said better, the civilizations. Humans are quite resilient too.
Guitars screaming: nothing more adequate for a protest song. The heaviest stuff on Earth ;-)

for listening to my madness.

The Aspen grove that you are talking about is about a 3 hour drive south of my home in a really beautiful part of Utah.

Protesting is usually quite out of my element. Normally I try to keep songs pretty tongue in cheek.

I really enjoyed your song Milonga Bolacera... Great stuff!

for having a listen. I'm still experimenting with recording and mixing of the guitars. Mic placement, and mixing are still pretty foreign to me. Someday, I'll figure out the sweet spot.

I've got to give a plug for We Were Heroes. That song rocks!

for the listen. I think that the last couple songs I've put out have gone a little faster because of the lack of dynamics. I have an idea for a song that will take me considerably more time. So don't expect another fasteddie brand headache song for a few weeks.

Your song Live With Me is killer!

The Death of Gaia
I just read a book by David Brinn called "Earth" that had a Gaia cult in it. Did you read this one? Anyway, this is a well-structured song, nice progressions. You've really got the chugging rhythm guitar down, Shreddin pretty good on the solo. Lyrics contain a powerful cautionary tale, and your vocals have just the right amount of indignation. Maybe they could come up in the mix a little.

Thanks
Vic. Things are coming together. The more songs I compose on the computer the better my production and recording skill is becoming. I use a drum loop for the groove now instead of a metronome. That has helped a bunch. I also am getting much better at programming drums. Before I had no clue what I was doing; now I'm just slightly clueless.

I mic the amp cabinets with a condenser mic. Soon, I'll have a really good instrument mic to isolate the speaker a little better. I've noticed with a condenser mic I have just a little bit of fuzziness in the guitar sound because of the omnidirectional nature of the mic.

In my mind over population is the greatest threat we face...
I have know solutions to offer, reproduction is what we do best.... hahahaaha.
Or.....historically the earth has warmed and cooled...... use all the oil...good, make us work on alternatives. Which we should be doing now.
But to populated past the point of drinking water and fields of food, oh yeah that gets my attention. Good tune

How do you get that fierce guitar tone? It's recorded live I assume? I'm using amp sims and I don't seem to get that really raucous edge. Damn. Good song too, by the way!!

Cool and Mean
I love how the double bass drum rolls under the guitar. Stellar guitar tone, phat and meaty. I wonder if mixing your vox with less treble and a fuller tone would give your stuff a heavier overall tone and groove. You mentioned that you need to work on your guitar tone and mixing, but I think that is the best part of what you do. Just my 2 cents, keep hitting it hard.
