Two Scoops of Sugar In

Description
I signed up for the RPM challenge and have been working on songs whenever I get the chance the last few days. I was planning on trying to make the whole record sound like it fit together (which is usually not my style). decided that I would base every song around some acoustic instrument, and some samples, with singing over it.

This started life as a song I was playing for my daughter the other day when the power went out. I just played a chord progression and started singing, and this is what came out. I have not decided if I should stick with this version or not. Since I used the ukulele, and I was trying to make an albums worth of songs, I felt like this 78 rpm sounding mix might be a good transitional tune. but then again I may hate it tomorrow and do a normal mix where you can actually hear everything.

should i stay with this highly effected mix, or should I do a real mix? if I leave this one, what could it use some improvements on? thanks, hope you like.

Lyrics
there's some coffee in there
let me fix you a cup
i put two scoops of sugar in
to make it as sweet as you

would you like a parfait?
or some peaches and cream?
i put two scoops of sugar in
to make it as sweet as you

you're my only hearts desire
nothing else would do
i'd travel the whole world over
as long as it's with you

would you like a cold drink?
maybe strawberry wine
i put two scoops of sugar in
to make it as sweet as you

(solo)

i put two scoops of sugar in
to make it as sweet as you

I'd be fine if the whole CD had this kind of
production. I think you should definitely keep this one if nothing else. Call it the McCartney moment in what might be an otherwise more Lennon collection. The song is sweet as hell - it's wonderful.

thanks man. do you think that the the solo section needs to be brought up a bit? so glad you like, spending the day working on more tunes today (don't work until late today). thanks for the listen.

I''d just bring up the whistling
in the solo - I like the consistent uke level throughout. It would be interesting if your CD felt like it was recorded in a radio station with one mic - like the Old Opry recordings.

Michael
I think this sounds good as is
The only thing I can think of (which may be a bit of a cliché in itself) is to gradually tune the filter towards the end of the song so the sound becomes clear and telephone line sounding (if that makes sense)

thanks for giving this a minute. i know what you mean about the effect, might try that idea on another piece (since I'm trying to make a cohesive unit). i'm thinking I might just clean it up a bit and leave it as is.

Charmingly pleasant
Actually, I hear a clarinet adding some color. Maybe ask bbarner? It's awfully hard to tell how something fits into something else without hearing the something else, but the EQ-filter blanket put over this to make it sound like a 78 works fine with me. It helps set it aside as a transitional piece. Maybe if you go with this, you'll get other era-transitional ideas for 1-2 other places on the album and help you fill it up...? Maybe another one about ice cream or p&j sandwiches or macaroni? I enjoyed this a lot, by the way.

Tobin
the funny part is that I tried to do a clarinet solo with software, and threw my hands up in disgust at the overall sound of that. i will ask bbarner. you are right about not knowing how something will work , w/out hearing the whole body of work. since I am only halfway through writing the tunes, I am in that same boat myself. haha. thanks again for the feedback.

sweet thing
I wouldn't change the mix.
Sounds fine to me. has that lo-fi ' I want to marry a lighthouse keeper' vibe to it which suits it fine.
I'm just learning the ukulele myself and I'm going to have a go at playing this.
Might need you to send me the chords if I get stuck ;-)
good stuff
enjoyed

Thanks. I listened at the right place at the right time. Charming and romantic. I like this version. The sound is what makes this special and gives it a sort of appeal. I could hear this as the credits are rolling at the end of a clever film.

Very good job friend

Very cool song
I thought the vocal effect was good. I agree about a clarinet or even a trombone in there. It would mix it up a tad. Ukes can get a bit stale through the whole song. Really like the vocal melody on this one. I am iffy on the filter myself. Maybe you can do it for the intro or first half of the song then have it pop to normal? A lot of people like it as is but I would suggest giving it a shot, it may give your song some drama. Anyway, great tune as only you can make it. It is a travishamockery that you never made it big.

Awesome Olde Timey Hit
Reminds me of the movie "paper moon"..... I would almost like to hear a tiny touch more snap crackle pop and more megaphone on the vocal, but what do I know........If it doesn't fit in with the other tunes just call it "contrast"........In the end it's all how you explain it....... I would just leave it as is and go on to the next one, you only have a month.

Ideas?
I like it as it is. The whistling a tad louder could be better.
Ideas? a kazoo in the solo in a dialogue with the whistling? some disk scratching? (I know it's cliche, but it could be appropriate here). Some dialog with your daughter in the intro or outro? or just her voice?
I like the lyrics. Very very sweet.

I was expecting a big band explosion in hi-fi by 3/4 of the song. Perhaps for another one.

Night at the Opera
Reminds me a bit of one of the songs off that old Queen album... really cool actually. I agree that a thread of continuity would be good to tie the whole album together, but possibly not a whole album of "telephone/78"style music. Personally I really like this song, and the style/mix, soft and gentle... but you could probably do a "soft/gentle" style album, with different instruments, but just a thread of "sweet as you" or "sugar" in the lyrics, maybe? You have so much creativity, I'd envision your RPM album being more colorful than just a bunch of Uke songs :-) But this one is just swell, I must say. :-)

fine
It's more than fine just the way it is. Don't change a thing. Move on to the next one. The RPM month is way too short...
You're making far more progress than me!
Of course you could do a normal mix of this as another song for the album if you run short of tunes to meet the 10 song/35 minute RPM guideline.

I like this mix. Like the idea of using it as a transitional piece. Maybe after something heavy. Good luck with the rpm challenge. I've heard some incredible things from others on this site when they participated. Its a very cool way to strike the muse.

Sweet Song
Pun intended. Very enjoyable. It reminds me somewhat of a scene from the Beatles Anthology where Paul sings "Ain't She Sweet" accompanied by only George playing the ukelele.

I liked the simplicity of the whistling as opposed to adding another instrument. Nice job.

This is actually,
a very charming mix as it is, Michael. I do like Tobin's idea of a clarinet, or maybe a muted trumpet, ala 1930 big band, but without the rest of the big band. Possibly doing a longer version of the solo.

Also, the suggestion by "month_of_sundays" to bring the whistling up in the mix is a valid one. Especially if you decide on not using a clarinet or muted trumpet for the solo.

Another thing that I thought of was extending the solo out some, maybe cover an entire verse & chorus that way.

Now as for the song itself, it's a very sweet (no pun intended) song. I love the 78rpm sound it really works well and makes this song stand out from the crowd.

Very creative and very well done Michael, I love it

This is so cool...
Yeah, it's McCartney-esque and has that pop ukulele thing going on... And WHISTLING....

Great lyric and melody. SImple and just right.

I know you're going for an old recording vibe, but I'd say that wouldn't be ruined by a little more level...

For novelty value
leave it like this. I like it. And you're not overstaying your welcome. Passages like that following 0:50 have a bit of an old-timey feel to it, so it's all cool as far as I'm concerned.

Needs a Bernadette Peters trumpet solo. Just kidding. This is such a cool throwback sound. I personally don't think the mix needs any improvements at all. The whistling is a great touch, too. Love it.
