Description
Here's a song I first put up to macjams in 2004. I've done some changes in chord progression and have written some additional lyrics.

I asked Tobin Mueller if this was something he'd like to add some jazz organ to, and he generously said yes:) I'm thrilled and honored to have him in on this, and I think he sure added some class with the very fine creative work he put in. Thanks Tobin!

Lyrics
SOME GO • SOME STAY
© Thor Oliversen

As the darkness slowly falls
upon the old man in late life,
He is looking at a photo
showing him and his late wife.

The doorbell rings,
he walks to the door.
And recognizes loneliness
has come to his floor.

some go - some stay

The lonely man reads the (news)paper every day.
Just to find one more friend
passed away.

All the things he liked to do,
Will no longer bring him joy.
His bones are tired from the journey,
and will not take him anymore.

some go - some stay

Now he's tired and alone
And will find joy in fewer things
or not at all

He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.

He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.

some go - some stay

In his little world he stays,
Watches pictures from the past.
The old man’s not afraid.
He just wants back the old cast.

Brave as he can be
Smiles when you are there
Wishes to be free
For all else he doesn’t care

some go – some stay

Now he’s tired and alone
And will find joy in fewer things
or not at all

He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.

He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.

Some go – some stay

I love the depth of this track... It just blossoms! The guitar work is outstanding and the organ work well... What more can be said... Top notch in all aspects!

Thanks for asking, I dug playing along
Thank you for the chance to play along. Love the subtly clever chord progressions, the easy hipness with which you add your own laid back funk to a piece, your authentic vocals and tasteful guitar work. I like the guitar you added after I sent the organ in - the final section could use even more, cuz it has more drive than the organ, I think. I'd make the organ slightly louder at 2:50, where I'm trying to play accompaniment off your guitar hits, to make it more equal footing volume-wise with the guitar, but then it would need to come down a hair again not to fight your vocals; and then I'd increase the organ a little earlier going into the solo section@ 3:50, to level it earlier to where you eventually have it set at 4:10 and out.

Really nice groove, such a fun song to play along with. Feel free to ask me anytime! Thanks again for thinking of me. Great tune.

fine tuned
Thor, I've said it before - but you have grown and polished your skills so highly in the five years I've been around here.

Great tune and mix.

Rocking
Tune with a bit of funkadelicness goin on. Very well done vocals and great funky groove to this one. Parts even border on rap even. Very nice work on this one. I love the mix as it is. Awesome. MJ has been on FIRE lately with good songs.

Some go
Oh man, this is so good. So glad you reposted it. Tobin's organ flies under the radar and makes the whole song float a little bit higher.
Love those intermingled guitars with slightly dissonant chords. Great singing.
Heavy lyrics. The music is saying something else, lighter. I like that: it's like a comedy talking about mortality.
Whoa! that key change :-D made me smile!

SOME GO • SOME STAY
I really like the last couple of tunes you have posted lately, Thor - this one is great. The lyrics are thoughtful, the guitar work is stellar and very tasty. And your vocal performance is quite Van Morrison-ish - very stylish. Excellent work - this really shines. Tobin's keyboard work adds a very nice soulful touch. Thank you for sharing this!

a funky edge
to a brilliant soul track. It's hard to sit still on my chair. Your vocals sound extremely confident here, and the whole song breaths solidness and craftsmanship. Gosh, I'd never have the balls to ask Tobin on one of my tracks. Excellent post, Thor!

your style and vibe...
are so soulful and clean. Solid jazz/soul music for the soul. I love the music bed... nice organ by Tobin... and of course your guitar licks are so fine, but I gotta say... your vocal is just tops. You really cut loose. Great tune from the soul man of the north.

some go... some PLAY!
Wow Thor, this is great, lovely funk and chords, and the lyrics are sad, and delivered beautifully with your voice. Excellent music work, Tobin's touch is sweet here, but your overall vision here really stands out.

Think I'll stay...
for more of this. Awesome collab between 2 of MJ's finest. Love your guitar work and Tobins' keys flesh this out perfectly. D/L for sure. I wish I knew how to get even 1/2 of the production value of your pieces. It's like they come out of a commercial studio.

Once again....
...the specialness of this tune resides in the Thoddi-Groove, the feel of it...

Tobin's organ and the guitar together are deep, locked and seamless.... I love how your lead and rhythm playing interlock....

A gentle funk vibe going on here
I hear moments of Steely Dan in this one, especially in the stanzas just before the break. The play between vocal, guitar, and organ is really well balanced and is totally reinforced by such solid musicianship. Thoroughly enjoyed and dloaded.

Many thanks gentlemen!
Doug

Awesome feel, tone, singing, and organ work. You, both, did an amazing job putting this together. I love it...
