Description
A song for the after party of the 2010 MJ Reunion Festival! Written after the birth of our first (and only so far) grandchild in 2006, this was posted just outside of my first year - so sue me :)

I always liked this tune and just wanted to give it a bit more energy. It has had 4529 hits, so I guess a few other people liked it too :)

This version uses many of the tracks from the earlier version, but I've done a lot of tweaking in Logic. The percussion has been re-done (mostly), and I added a bit of a lift with some extra guitar tracks in the instrumental section. I also added a harmony vocal track. Tobin, I also changed the ending for you.

As you can see from the pic, Aja has grown up into a lovely little person - apple of her Pa's (and Nanni's) eye for sure!

I'd like to thank everyone who has participated in this year's MJRF - contributors in particular, but also all the listeners who spent time going through the impressive list of new/old songs posted.

Lyrics
Angel Eyes
© 2006 Neil Porter

I heard you cry
I saw your smile
I fell in love
Your daddy’s nose
Your mummy’s eyes
It’s true

Angel eyes
Aja smiles
Angel eyes

Close your eyes
And go to sleep
My little one
Dream your dreams
We have our own
For you

Angel eyes
Aja smiles
Angel eyes

We shut the windows
On today
The night has come
Time for you
To drift away
To sleep

Angel eyes
Aja smiles
Angel eyes

I heard you cry
I saw your smile
I fell in love
Your daddy’s nose
Your mummy’s eyes
It’s true

Thanks for the listen Dick
The quality of the sound on the original surprised me considering it was done in the "jiguma dark ages". Just a little tweaking required.
Cheers from Oz.

That's lovely! The Logic treatment has certainly done this song a service. Great tribute to your little granddaughter. Does she like it?

Dave
I sent it to Aja this morning and here is my daughter's return email: "I asked Aja if she wanted me to email you anything and she said ‘tell nanni and pa that I love them’!!! CUTIE! When I ask her what everyone’s jobs are she refers to you as a ‘music maker’ :-)".
Mission accomplished!

From one grandfather
to another...
Very beautiful song Neil, nice work on the musical plan and beautiful words for Aja, we guess a great lot of affection in your voice and your interpretation.
Aja is very lovely. How old she is now ? I don't remember and I'm incapable to answer this Brigitte's question.
Beautiful song also to close this 2010 MJ Reunion Festival.
Thank you for all this my friend.

Hi Marc
Thanks for your kind comment - Aja is now a "big girl" - 3 and a half, and getting sweeter by the day.
Bonjour à Brigitte. Perhaps one day we'll be able to introduce Clementine and Aja to each other :)
Our very best wishes to you both,
Jan and Neil

Again, thanks for all the support you've given me over the years I've been at MJ. Glad you could hear the benefits of the changes - especially the ending.
The festival was fun - thanks for taking part with such a great song.

Aja's eyes and smile
What a timeless song and photo, reminds me a bit of my own daughter and my niece. Sweet sweet music, performance, mix and singing. Perfect lyrics. This is well worth bending the laws of MJRF physics to re-post... besides, I can't see the MJRF administration coming after you, all you have to do is sick Aja on them and they'll melt like chocolate in the hand of a 5 year old.

ttfn,
Drakonis

man
i love that guitar. reminded me right away of pure prairie league, great laid back vibe, same for the solo, i like the Caribbean flavor where you could have gone more country folk, lifts the tune. i wasn't sure about the chorus at first because the chord progression was unexpected but by the end of the tune i got it and i think it works really well. overall a really nice song and a cool tribute to your daughter.

Thanks Craig
I don't think I've ever listened to Pure Prairie League - not knowingly at least. Must do that. The Carribean" feel came when I was noodling along before I posted - sounded OK, so I left it in :)
Glad you enjoyed this one especially.

Mr Boy!
It was worth doing the MJRF just to get you and a few others back to MJ for a while. Aja sure is growing fast - and getting more and more verbal with it. This is a special song for me (along with "Coastal Daze", and I loved sitting and spending some time on it again.
Thanks for dropping by for a listen and leaving a comment.

Aja,
"when all my dime dancing is through, I run to you."
She`s so cute, you must be very proud.
"Music maker"? Sounds right!

Although there is some unevenness it`s a moving, warm, intelligent tune.

You won't see any lawsuits from me!!
That intro guitar is as clear as a bell, which makes the craft of your playing seem so very intimate right from the start. By the time you start singing I'm in the palm of your hand.

I like how you've initially kept the percussion down to a shaker which gives a rhythmic movement in a most restrained way. Even the drums with the rimshots are deftly brought in. The well orchestrated bridge takes on a gentle Loggins and Messina feel to me.

It's simply lovely Neil. We're all the better for your deciding to dust this off.

Cheers,
Doug

This is gorgeous, Neil....
Simpler than I remember, and sparklier.... The guitars left and right are really full and pretty.... Once again you enlisted a halfway decent bass player... And I think this is a really, really nice vocal... And the second vocal track is tight and has that nice furry quality... I really like your acoustic lead guitar bits in this, too....

It's amazing how you blink with kids, and they do that growing up thing...

Beautiful
girl and music. I like the sound you get out of your acoustic noodling very much. The sparsely arranged perc suits the mood well. Your bass playing follows the groove like a shadow... very tasty.

You did an awesome job with pulling the strings of this MJRN thing. Thanks Neil, you are one vital ingredient in the macjams receipt.

Thanks for bringing back,
This song, and the MJRF. These things are productive, learning experiences, but mostly they're fun for all concerned, listeners and musicians.

Like the feeling of this song and the continuity of the new mix. Pretty song for a pretty young lady. She'll remember this song long after all of us have turned to dust, my friend. There can't be any better gift than that. Kudos Neil

Makes me wish I had a granddaughter to write songs for.

Thanks, Neil, for all your work on this Festival. I'm a little late getting to hear the last half-dozen or so entries but I've enjoyed every moment of it. And this tune is such a sweet finale. Thanks.

Song isn't too shabby either. Strangely, I don't remember this one. Surprises me cause I know your stuff pretty well. Oh wait...There's the chorus! NOW I remember...Ha ha...(Getting old I guess!)
