The Thing About Cheating

Description
another attempt at an honest country-rock tune, trying to find a sound somewhere between indie and country/southern rock. i've done a cheating tune about being cheated on, this one is from the perspective of the cheater. or not, since we don't ever know if the character cheats or not. but i've been in this situation, not recently, i like to think i've learned a bit about it but anyway i was trying musically and lyrically to get into that moment of truth - will you cheat or won't you? and i wanted that countrypolitan sound from the 70's, only with tempie stuff.

also i think i need to say that both times i found myself in this situation i didn't do it. not because i'm too good for it, just because for whatever set of reasons i chose not to at the time. mostly because i can think of plenty of legitimate reasons to shoot somebody but not a single reason to cheat on someone. it's just about the most disloyal despicable thing i can think to do. which doesn't mean its something i'm incapable of, just something i hope i don't ever find myself doing.

Lyrics
i saw her looking sideways
at my wedding band
in a chester gap bar
out having a beer with a friend
i gave her a good looking over
and i thought about my wife
at home with the kids
it had been kind of rough for a while

yeah the thing about cheating
you do it one damn time
and the whole damn thing
ain't worth a train track dime

she asked me did i want to dance
i said sure, why not
i led her to the dance floor
and picked out a spot
she put her head on my shoulder
i put my hands on her hips
she felt just like susannah
moving beneath my fingertips

yeah the thing about cheating
you do it one damn time
and the whole damn thing
aint worth a train track dime

the plain simple truth of it
you ought to learn it to the letter
if you have a good woman
you're not gonna find something better

Insanely good -
if just for the line "train track dime". What a cool tune structurally - it's like the excitement and fear grow together during that distortion break. Excellent.

will he or won't he
really nice tune Craig. a nice honest theme on human nature and the quilt factor.

the meld of country and rock melds nicely. maybe country alternative comes to mind. cool ending.

quilt factor
so i was thinking wow that's deep, the quilt factor, human nature like a mess of patches of this and that, and then i figured out "GUILT" factor. lol glad you liked it man. i thought about country alt as a genre but i think the alt parts are more indie than alt?????

The Thing About Cheating
Love the train track dime line. A good honest lyric sung with conviction. I like the spare arrangement, the guitar lines are really good. I think you're finding your sound.

Fuzzy break
is so spot on. Especially when it cuts out abruptly and the lyrics come back in. And to the lyrics... wow. So thick and real you have to swat them out of your face. "If you have a good woman you're not gonna find something better" is such a gold nugget of country wisdom.

The most intriguing thing about your process is how seamless the arrangement is. It's not 1 genre or the other. But it's not "look how weird I can be". That right there is probably the most difficult thing about arranging. You nail it every time, brother.

fuzzy breaks and nuggets of country wisdom
thanks man. i spend a lot of time on the arrangement, moving things around...i have a long commute so i normally save four or five different versions and then listen to them as i drive to see which one works. and then i bounce a version to these two jokers i hang out with (virtually) to see what they think. if they're not too busy finding lost words or flowerfying forum backgrounds they normally give me some good advice.

Tempie-politan
Great tune, one of my favorite tempie numbers! You have a marvelous economy as a writer--no extra images or wordplay, and I think that helps make your already sharp imagery stand out that much more.

Love the build to the second verse and then the drop-back. Your voice sounds rich and country-smooth too: I like when you get the twang going.

I would maybe vote for a quiet piano over the quiet organ. And the string squeak is super-loud in headphones. But I'm really stretching to find "constructive criticism" to levy--mostly I'm just impressed and daunted.

Sissy
was so fine in Urban Cowboy! I bet you have a SISSY license plate in the back of your truck!

I've been so busy in the forums today that I didn't have time to congratulate you on another fine toon.

As always, I'm so glad to be one of the lucky jokers that watches you work your magic. I'm also lucky that you're smart enough to ignore me when I suggest a herky jerky synth solo or changing a lyric to "train track slime".

Well, back to the forums. I have a photo of Bobby Brady's stunt double to post.... huh?

Now
alternative country is hard! Theres not many people can pull it off. I think you might be one of them though. Love the way the distorted guitar builds up and then just stops, out a big smile on my face that did!

you definitely nailed the C&W spirit with your vocals. I grinned at the hard guitar that came in a little after 1:00 - HARD C&W, ya gotta love it.

hard c&w
thanks man, i listen mostly to hard core country, the old like waylon and merle, dallas wayne, etc and the new like the bottle rockets, drive by truckers, etc and then indie rock - art brut, pavement, on and on so i guess that's why i like to mix them up

I don't think I've
ever heard a song that expressed 'cheating' so perfectly and with the wisdom of hindsight.
Beautifully understated musicianship and vocal compliments those great lyrics perfectly.
Downloaded. Thanks.

Train track dime
.. from the squeak of your fingers on the strings to the fuzz guitar, the little tipple of piano and the strings this is all kinds of wonderful. And that stop ....! Man this is really great. Love the stripped down verses and your voice here is again reaching new levels of emotional delivery. Great work my friend.

Quality
..and great lyrics. It's a topic I've mulled over a few times, lines like "just because we can doesn't mean we ought to" and "when wine has washed away all the inhibitions, only lust remains" Really liked that dramatic stop at 1.34, it just built up the tension perfectly. great job Craig. Cheers Mark

Oh yeah!
oops how did I miss this one?
What a great song! I think the commenters have already pointed out most of the cool things, the "train track dime" line is instant classic.
the indie/jangle guitar thing going on around 3:00 mark is pure distilled musical goodness... that kind of thing is kind of like equivalent to heroin for me LOL>
really enjoyed it, downloaded and going to ipod!

My favorite MJ tune of 2010 so far
For what it's worth, I realized today that this Tempie tune is the one that's been most stuck in my head of any of the great music I've heard this year. Upon relistening, it's even better than I remember, especially the instrumental breaks...

The last 2 lines are spot on! Darn boys stink sometimes!

This surely doesn't though, what a great song. Like the idea that you wrote it from a cheater's perspective, very clever.

glad to see this tune isn't so far back in the playlist by now that nobody sees it. thanks for keeping it alive. And you're right, boys are a lot of the time more trouble than they're worth, my wife reminds me of that truism now and again.
