Description
Where to begin. A couple of weeks ago I contacted Gaylen75 to see if he'd be up for a collab, and he did the song "core" in just a few days. I was pretty psyched. Part of the rush of this place is collabs. Things that take you different directions.

This soundbed was a companion piece (written same week) and Gaylen again elevated it from jam form in just a few days. He's one prolific dude, and I'd like to say thanks for his time and talent.

I was going to do my usual quantize and note fixing, but decided to leave it alone. This based on something Composerclark commented once when I first joined (yes, I'm a little slow on the uptake). Basically "let it all hang out" :-), but seriously, something thoughtful like he always does, about not having every note being aligned. I need to do this more.

Thanks for listening

Cool!!
I like how the Vox and Piano go together so well, you guys hit a musical nerve with this one, glad you didnt quantize this time, it does have that jam feel.

Cool stuff
going on here. Nice piano licks throughout (is this all acoustic, 'cuz the piano sounds like it?). I do like the way this number chugs along with such comfortable pacing. Clark's advice is sound: do NOT hit the quantize button. Resist is like a disease!... I do wish I could have understood the lyrics of this number. I assume they were important, but I couldn't catch them (but I do admit to "selective" hearing when there's a lot going on). The vocals in general, though, seemed a little harsh to my ears, though the lyrics may suggest that they be sung in this way...don't know). I am always amazed by collaborative efforts, and this one is no exception. You guys put together something really solid and you have created a song that stands up quite well, indeed. Glad I caught this.

radio hit
I clicked the player here and started working on something while this was playing. Got distracted and forgot what I was listening to for a while... thought I'd tuned in to some cool stuff on the radio... Something familiar in the style of the piano playing caught my attention, and I "woke up" and remembered what I was listening to.

Very impressed with this one. The vocals leads me to think of Peter Gabriel, and the music is catchy and pro. I like the sound of the piano in this one. I think the plain grand sound suits the style well.

The drums are very well programmed and cool sounding. What are you using for drums John?

drums
Thor, I think there might be two kits. One was a "band in the box" file, and the other percussion pattern me thinks came from the korg triton extreme. Its got some cool presets in their combo sounds, replete with bass and drums :-) Thank you for the kind words.

This one came out great. Cool backing track, loving the bass and the piano in particular. Melody/lyrics are a perfect fit, and sung with conviction.

Man Gaylen, you been crankin em out
lately. Cool piece. Very disparate sounds between the soundbed and the vocal. Soundbed is soft and velvety and the vocal is sharp with the usual filtered sound. Works well in the mix and gives great separation. Nice work!

Maybe you guys should continue in this manner. Enjoyed this and the previous round as well.
Recall "less is more"? Might help? The hardest is focus. Keep 'um coming.

This sounds terrific, guys....
...and like no other thing... Interesting doubled vocal lines on Gaylen's part... The soundbed is enveloping and perfect...

Nobody's posting their lyrics these days....

lyrics
We set foot to path
beneath skeletal alders
Nightfall come fast
this midwinter's eve
I pray thee
Shroud me in your
dirty cloak free of nuance
Stars, tell their tales of
lonely light piercing empty sky
Walk the pale moon home
above temptation and me
Late winds bring smells of
saltwater and wedded ruin
So we dance one last time
in our wood by the sea

Say your peace to me my love
but then speak to me no more

We took up
and she looked up
from clutches deep
Saddened, solemn, true
is the face that I wear for you
Brisk strides hide fierce tides
inside your eyes, Lora-Lye
time to let go
My mood grew colder
than dare I say she deserved
time to let go Lora-Lye
But now I have to
shoulder and bare justice served
time to let go
justice is served

Very...
... cool collab. I've always dug your musical abilities and how perfectly you can fit yourself in songs, ktb. Great vocals from Gaylen; only if they had more presence. His vocals seem a little muffled buried in the background.

I second Thoddi's Gabriel reference. :)

Wow! This is so unique. I like the sound and the production is just fabulous, it flows like velvet from my speakers. There is a real contrast between the vocals and the soundbed that makes this sound so really special. The octave vocals are terrific too.

Great duo
This is another of my favs. I could sit and listen to you play piano all night. Gaylen...has wonderful gifts, his voice and song writing abilities are two of the many.
SISTERS said 2414 days ago (November 14th, 2010)
several thumbs up
gaylen - the depth of your commitment to letting your voice run free is just amazing. i can't understand the lyrics much - and frankly don't care - tho reading them tells me you're a really fine writer. i like your choice of unusual harmony - but mostly i adore how the syllables come out of your mouth - PASSION could be your middle name. ;D

john - you're such an intuitive musician, and have such a fine sense of when to go and when to come. i believe your piano could come up just a hair in the mix before the solo. there's an inherent gracefulness in your playing that to me defines your work. excellent listen! thank you,
anne
