Barbed wire Sunday

Description
When I wrote this tune last year I was inspired to write a song about the Berlin wall, seeing as it was the 20th anniversary of it coming down but then got really stuck with the lyrics as the more I read about it the harder it felt to encapsulate everything about it. So, apologies if it seems a simple approach to the subject.
When I was 10 my Dad drove us to see some friends of his in west..and east Berlin.
I can still remember the odd and exciting feeling as we passed through check point charlie with some 'western' music tapes hidden in the boot to give to his east german friends.
Many thanks to the missus who helped with the words and the title.
Barbed wire Sunday was the day when the first 'roots' of the wall sprang up.
Hope you like it

Lyrics
Same city, same sky
They took a pen and drew a line
down the middle, the great divide
between the west and the eastern side

They built a wall, 12 feet tall
to keep us separate one and all
Is that my brother over there
beyond the border guards ice cold stare?

One day this’ll all come down
Take a ride to the other side of town
Trabants driving down the road
to checkpoint Charlie
Some dream of unity
Some dream of liberty
find the friends we haven’t seen
since barbed wire Sunday

Don’t know who’s a spy
working for the Stasi or the Polizei
Closed world. Not free
State owned security

No news, just party views
Can’t make a choice if there’s nothing to choose
Sandman smiling on TV
A symbol of solidarity

One day this’ll all come down
Take a ride to the other side of town
Trabants driving down the road
to checkpoint Charlie
Some dream of unity
Some dream of liberty
find the friends we haven’t seen
since barbed wire Sunday

Storm the gate at Brandenburg
Jump the wire and spread the word
same city, same sky
I’ll see you on the other side

One day this’ll all come down
Take a ride to the other side of town
Trabants driving down the road
to checkpoint Charlie
Some dream of unity
Some dream of liberty
find the friends we haven’t seen
since barbed wire Sunday

that's
a wild memory. love the chorus, the way you phrase "check-point-charlie". great vibe, really like the new wavey chorus on the guitar and the chunka-chunka distorted rhythm. also the wood blocks.

"find the friends we haven't seen since barb wire sunday" is a great lyric.

cool photo too, reminds me of cartier-bresson

chunka chunks
My Missus wrote that bit of the lyrics.
The photo is of Conrad Schuman, an east german guard who defected at the last minute.
He lived in the west and didn't get to see the family he left behind till the wall came down.
Anyway, glad you liked it and thanks for dropping in

I just watched...
...a documentary last week on different tunneling attempts from both east and west. It was fascinating not only the attempts of people to tunnel out to escape but the fact that the U.S. Government used tunnels as well to spy on the east. I knew about some tunnels and the many attempts to get over the wall, but this was pretty fascinating. And frightening.

A very cool song and a very cool reflection on the wall, the Cold War and that entire facet of 20th Century History. It's definitely still a timely tune, but I had no problem imagining this song being played back in the 80s on MTV (when they still showed videos) showing a montage of scenes of the wall, the people and its history.

Great tune. Like it even better on the second listen. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks J
There was a load of TV programmes last year about the Stasi ( who's members outnumbered the KGB in Moscow) and a whole load of other angles. I'm also ploughing through a book by Frederick Taylor about the wall which is lengthy..but fascinating.
If we're doing an MTV video I want david Hasselhoff in it with his jacket sleeves rolled up ;-)
Glad you liked it and thanks for the listen(s)

Cool
Nice song! Your phrasing reminds me a bit of Human League on this one and that guitar solo is like early Ultravox (before Midge Ure turned them into crap). Love the choppy riff with what sounds like a minor chord in there? Lyrics and delivery are brill as ever.

Human league
I used to sing along to the first 2 human league Lps when I was a teen..and had the Phil Oakey haircut too ;-)
And John Foxx era Ultarvox were pretty cool as well.
The opening verse chords are D..and Am so you're right.
Thanks for dropping in and the listen
cheers

Great song
King. I think it might take an entire album to even scratch the surface of all that can be said about this. I love that haunting solo in this. The tone sounds familiar. What did you use to get it? D/L for sure.
Peace

guitar sound
Hi Guy, I used the 'gunge' preset in GB..then wacked a load or reverb and echo on it..took it out of the song, dragged it into Audaicty, stuck even MORE reverb on it. Dragged it back into GB and double tracked it with the original. At least I think I did. If you asked me to do it again I wouldn't have a clue.
Anyway, thank you very much for dropping in and your comments

Bass
Glad someone commented on it.
I was pretty pleased with the way it came together.
I was messing around with something akin to david Bowie's 'Let's Dance' or 'Sound and Vision' and hoped I could nail the essence of those. The rest just followed. Glad you liked it and thanks for the listen

Barbed wire Sunday
Like the rhythm guitar riff, and the synth pad is a good complementary choice. Bass line is cool. Creative lyric, and well sung. Mix is well balanced and eq separated.

Great idea
for a song - lyrics portray the story perfectly. I can hear the amount of time you have spent on this. Time well spent, perfect performance and great production.
Downloaded. Thanks.

Time spent
I was starting to think I'd spent too much time on it. The music came fairly easily..but the lyrics took so long I nearly jacked in the idea for the lyrics. Glad I persevered.
Thanks for the listen and the comments

Serious stuff
Really well done.

Nice tight controlled sound.

A sort of 80s vibe about it which I like.

Cheers

Very cool
Great production and very nice songwriting.
Love how you manage to make this into a whole, instead of linked parts of a song.

Very nicely done.

Wow!
I don't know where to start. Great song! I like the palm muted/electric guitars behind everything else. And what is the synth sounding thing? I really like it, its almost hypnotic. Really nice I'm glad I checked it out!

Thanks Jay
Was pleased with the mixing of the guitar sounds.
The synths are a mix of Moonbeam preset in Garageband, the Free Alpha synth and Zebra which are all free downloads.
I'm glad YOU checked it out and thanks for the comment

great title. fantastic rocking theme running through this. i nearly bought a trabant thinking i'd sell it for a fortune. great guitar break....trying to remember who you remind me of. smokey bacon says human league...yes..mixed with U2...especially the backing theme. great ending too. a commerical hit.

Trabants
I guess the guitar solo has a touch of the Edge but I was trying to get a Bowie vibe circa "Low' and trying to emulate the brilliant guitarists he's had working with him....and I end sounding like the Human league :-/
Funny how these things happen.
Anyway, glad you liked it and thanks for dropping in

Great solid production
I was in Berlin a number of times in the early Seventies and it was always a bizarre experience to come and go to the East. Got busted once for exchanging money - no serious consequences - just lost my money to the guards. Your guitar sound here is massive - really great. Slightly reminiscent of U2 - but much better in my book - I find them highly over rated - whereas you deserve heaps of praise for this tune. Great lyrics and vox too.
