Description
another song i started to mix for the RPM challenge. this is about my daughter Sophie. It originally started life as a rock steady/reggae tune, but i decided my voice was lame in that context. so i put together a more motown drum beat. too straight, so I made an instrument from some samples I had of ice being broken and footsteps in the snow; ran those through some filters and that rounded out the rhythm section more to my liking.

other than that, there is the reappearance of the ukulele (instead of a guitar), and some synth sounds. the bass is the reggae bass sound from garageband, that I ran through an amp. does it work, or should I replace it. not sure if this mix is done or not, sounds pretty close to me though. think of an indie rock motown pop song (with ukulele).

anything you want
can't anything wrong with this.
Bass sound is good, drums/ rhythm sound just right and 'wailing' background synth a cool touch.
Touches of CSNY doing a Cockney Knees up...which makes as much sense as an indie rock motown pop song :-)
Ukulele addition good choice
Enjoyed
Cheers

thanks
glad you liked. CSNY doing Cockney Knees Up is awesome, seems even stranger than indie/motown. thanks for the spin.

Great beat
You have quite a distinctive tone to your voice. Instantly recognizable.
Which is a special thing.

Would love to hear you sing "Happy Together" for some strange reason.

thanks lavalamp
i 'm glad you like. I think the vocal sound on this one worked okay. i finally found a reverb setting that works with my voice and didn't sound like i was in a cave. Happy together huh? Maybe a future collab? You take the garagepunk voice, and I'll take the other. would actually be cool. thanks for stopping by.

Fuzzy vest
I like the beat, the lazy vocals, the unique rhythm sounds you sampled and filtered, the funny synth sound in the outro, the simplicity of the track. It may be that I get bored to fast without changes, but I really wanted a bridge or something to add another layer of thought to the piece. I'm rarely comfortable with a song that says the same thing in every line, I'm always looking for another layer, even if hinted at (like Lennon's famous bridges that change perspective so mysteriously). Or a moment to breath, a break in the rhythm and then a rebuild of the rhythmic feel. That said, I find your songs to almost always please something inside me, thru a combination of your clear vocals, your infectious pop sense, and your authentic honesty. I love the fuzzy vest, too.

thanks man. so happy you liked this one. I agree that it could use a bridge, but really slammed for time on the RPM thing, so I have been just cranking 'em out when I get a chance and little things like proper bridges, arrangement, and production are getting put on the back burner. If i have time I will try to improve them, or I may just re-visit some of them later. the RPM challenge is really great fun though: "ok, got that one done. time to write another song." thanks so much, always love your reviews,

Love the blend of the uke and the bass/beat
This sounds great and somewhat reminiscent of Elvis Costello at times (while sounding nothing like him)
Lovely use of synths to embellish
I really like the clean, minimal soound here
Fantastic

Michael
I like the percussive effect of the ukulele in the intro and chorus, but somewhat goes away during the verses. The drums are cool, sound lose and dynamic. Nice syncopated touch around 1:50.
I'm listening with my onlymidfreq crappy buds, so I can't tell how the bass sounds, I can hear it but I guess is more deep than the sound I'm getting now.
Nice voice armonies all over the place.
I like the synth touches giving bright color strokes to the instrumental part. I wouldn't be unhappy if there were more (that's convoluted :-)
I agree with the bridge idea, or maybe a variation. Something simple that may be worth a try is to remove a couple of instruments (ukulele only?) from the first 4 bars of the last chorus @2:00. That would surprise the listener (I would expect the same chorus as before) and emphasize the acoustic vibe of the record. And may also mark the song is "leaving".
A nice pop song I see myself playing in my car during our happy family weekend road-trips to cheer everybody up.

Indie Motown Pop
This gets the award for "best use of a ukelele in a triple-compound sub-sub-genre" for sure. And I'm partial to father-daughter songs (per my latest song post) so I like this one even more. Mix is really nice too. Like the rhythm sounds and the vocal harmonies + swell.

I really like the reggaebass sound (I've used it as well albeit from Logic). Upon reflection though, I think the articulation and depth of a "real" bass track--even one fundamentally in the same vein as your GB track-- would actually do a lot for this tune. Just my opinion...

Ask Jack. I'm a pushover for 'dad' songs...
But this doesn't need me being a pushover. It has nice rollicking, rolling gait to it... Almost music hall kind of melody... Rock/pop/music hall like McCartney or Davies, maybe...

I'm having to push my ancient ears a little to catch the lyric going by, so I'd vote for another dB or so in the vocal...

Big fan of the uke!
Love the lazy shuffle groove that just begs for the uke. Great melody, especially the chorus hook. I really like the background vocal arrangement. Very sweet.

Actually it's the best indie mo uke pop I've ever heard. Love the lyrics and that girl is so darn cute. This could make you a whole new rock star babe magnet - the doting dad.

Anything You Want
This song feels like it was written for a young girl from her dad. This tune is well put together with nice vocals and harmonies. I too like the synth textures you use to fill out the background, but honestly I did not miss a bridge here just mho.

Nice job - glad I got to hear this - thanks!!

Wild rhythms
The rhythms on this are amazing. It really pushes the song further. I read a quote from Jay-Z recently where he mentioned how indie rock is doing some really interesting things and he hopes hip hop starts to follow suit. Reminds me of this. Super cool. And the daddy/daughter thing hits close to home.

wobbly
and kind asure foote at the same time-- like a toddler. Lots of songs about kids on the site this week. Wonder why. Very Sonny Bono furry vest on Sophie, cool fashion statement on her part! have to agree with Tobin on the comment about needing a bridge or something, it's just begging for it. The uke is perfect- kind-of a Paul McCartney RAM vibe about it in a way. Cool tune. Thx!
