Last Words Boogie (Featuring scofugate)

Description
This one is a collab with the extremely talented SCOFUGATE on drums!

The words are all extracted from the last words of American gangster Dutch Schultz (famously made into a play by William S Burroughs). You can read the entire transcript of his delirium-induced final monologue at http://www.feastofhateandfear.com/archives/dutch.html

Anyway, I was pretty thrilled with the drumming and I hope you like it too.

Lyrics
DUTCH SCHULTZ LAST WORDS BOOGIE

please, get me up my friends
give me some water, only thing that i want.
please get me up my friends.

I don't know who shot me
that kind of shooting saved a man's life…
I don't know who shot me.

mama, mama, mama, mama
I'm dying, I'm dying, I'm dying, I'm dying
mama, mama, mama, mama
please let them leave me alone.

Look out for Jimmy Valentine
look out for jimmy valentine, for he's an old pal of mine
look out for jimmy valentine….

OK OK, I am all through
don't make me go there… I don't want to
please make it quick, I am all through
open this up and break it -
so I can touch you.

Bopping
however minimal, any bopping is appreciated! Scott's drumming is responsible for that I believe....

Kickin big time!
Sweet 70's 80's style rock! This one kicks butt! Great drums Scott! Excellent vocals and axe work R67! I had to listen to this twice before I could come up with some worthy comments but all I can come up with is: Killer! Awesome! Kickin!

Lynyrd Skynrd
I will admit to a weakness for southern-fried sounds.
Glad you liked!

This rawks
so hard. The riffs carry it. The drums sound awesome... You always come up with really good bridges that compliment your tunes.... and the tone on the last lick is sa-weet. And an interesting premise for a tune. Enjoyed a lot.

we aim to rock
the original riff to this song was disturbingly similar to the ghastly "Spirit in the Sky." (OK I have to admit I kind of like that song) When I realized that, I knew the riffs must be changed! the verse riff I now realize is somewhat similar to Kinks "Last of the steam powered trains". I am glad you liked it!

Boogie
This is great. Love the guitar and the drums are kickin. Very cool lyrically. Love the chorus.

This is workin' on a number of levels...not the least the perfect guitar playing.

I want hear more tunes with you and this "band."

Excellent post.

Cool ...
... great combo of chunky rockin' guitars and those ever cool Relic67 powerpop style guitars. It's a little bit Big Star, a touch Cheap Trick and oh so swingin'. Great track

thanks Paddy! I started out thinking kinda John Lee Hooker, morphed into something else...
scofugate's drums have that awesome Bonhamesque heavy swinging sound which really improved the tune....

whoa, yeah, alright
the drumming takes your usually great tunes up a notch dude. the chorus just KILLS. Love the "whoo", "yeah", "alright"s. And that solo - jeesh - dickey betts all the way. nothing better than listening to a tune that's so good you think to yourself "man i have to get busy!" thanks for keeping the bar high around here.

BTW, cool concept too.

thanks
Many thanks for the kind comments. It was so cool to have a real drummer play on it... especially one that played (and recorded) the drums so well.
Funny you should mention dickey betts, I was actually thinking of Duane Allman when I did the slide... I think he played slide in standard tuning, which I attempted to do here, not all that skillfully but glad you liked it!

Many thanks to R67
for asking me to play on this very very cool tune!! He totally rocks!! Love the southern rock clash with the Texas sand sound he made. Made my job easy...Kudos man!! Gotta love the Steve Gains style slide he put on this.

It was very fun hearing this one come together!

And thanks to you!!
Thanks for the drumming man! It made the tune sound much better than my usual amateurish standard... You play and record like a pro, which you may be for all I know!
Hope we can do another one sometime!

This song
and great arrangement gives no time to be bored - spectacular. Reminding me a lot of 10cc (great favourites of mine) - but I think this is better. Fantastic guitars, vocal and drums. Very polished and professional sounding mix.
Definite download. Thanks.

boogie
you have a wicked sense of riffage..ala Rick derringer, Lenny Kravitz..and I love it! the guitars just hum. Very cool songcraft. Scofugate keeps it tight and interesting with some very tasty breaks and fills along the way. Props to you both

interested how you did this? laid in a click track somewhere for the drums. Its sounds very organic. Like a band thats played together for many years.

As far as drums
He sent me the song and told me the BPM, then I lined the first note up in Logic...cranked up the built in metronome, then 23 takes later with a little flextime editing...this is what happened.

Great job you guys! Love those clean guitars and high energy vox! Scott kicks back and into gear with those drums...those guitars remind me of Steve Miller!

Feels a lot like Skynrd to me. Great guitar, loved that slide on the lead. Scott's drumming kicks a** as usual. Made me look around for the bong and the keys to the Chevy Nova. Sadly, they were not there.

Hell of a rocker, here. Like Skynyrd would do it if they were so in to themselves and long winded. You're stupid talented, brother. GREAT theme for a song. I'm jealous of what you got. Great drumming, too!

Well!
After so many kind words from you, I thought it about time I drag my lazy butt over and see whatcha got, and you know, you and Scofugate really knocked this out of the park! I think it's admirable that you could take time to listen to "Mr. Old School" here when you have a singing style that's far different, but wow, I wouldn't mind being able to do what you did here on your energetic and feisty vocal! You both done great guys--this was excellent and full marks for a job excellently done!

Postscript
I meant to add, my dad told me that when he was about 10 or so, he watched a shoot out between Dutch and the cops back in Philadelphia (and in honor of Dutch, I'm typing this in the famous Dutch Roman font that is so popular these days...nyuck, nyuck, nyuck--little gangster humor for you!) Keep up the fabulous work!

singing
the word singing should be enclosed in quotation marks in my case LOL.
I actually love jazz/swing/tin pan alley etc., used to play alto sax in a big band in my university days. however I would be listening to husker du on the way to the gig.
not well schooled enough to make my own jazz tunes as yet... maybe someday!

Like the finest American boogie rock of the 70s. Great bridge! That thick double tracked rhythm guitar simply rules! And could it be complete without a screaming slide solo?
