Description
This song was originally intended for the MacJams Reunion thing - I was trying to recreate a song from my first year - well, as is usually the case, I get carried away with the development of the melodies and I forget what I'm doing and the song turns into something far from the original. I like when that happens usually, but I wish I could stick with my plan rather than going with the flow every single time.

Do I always get this side tracked? Yes I do.

Song Description: I was investigating the faith of Noah, the infamous ship builder/animal lover/man who found favor in God's eyes... I found it to be so fascinating and I thought about how difficult it must've been to be the only man on earth who believed in God. I thought about what Noah might've thought about while he sat in a boat waiting to be delivered...

As my mind twisted, I imagined a couple being afloat in the sea for a long time and waiting to be rescued, waiting for helicopters to rescue them. After many days, weeks at sea, clinging to wreckage, he starts to think she's crazy. He thinks she's at a bus stop waiting for helicopters....

Lyrics
YOU WAIT FOR HELICOPTERS
AT THE BUS STOP, BABY
I TRY TO UNDERSTAND
YOU’RE MUMBLING
I THINK YOU’RE CRAZY

YOUR WORDS THEY FILL MY HEAD
WITH QUESTIONS AND CONFUSION
NO HELICOPTERS YET
YOU ARGUE THAT IT’S NO DELUSION

YOU WEAR ME OUT
YOU KNOCK ME DEAD
YOU KEEP YOUR EARS
OUTSIDE YOUR HEAD
ALL COVERED UP
WITH YOUR TWO HANDS
YOU KICK MY WORDS LIKE KICKING CANS

THE TWO OF US ARE STRANGERS
BABY, ON A RAFT AT SEA
RESCUED THE GIRL IN YOU
BUT STRANDED IS THE BOY IN ME

YOU WAIT FOR HELICOPTERS
AT THE BUS STOP, BABY
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND
THE MUMBLING
AS IF YOU’RE CRAZY

YOUR WORDS THEY FILL MY HEAD
WITH QUESTIONS AND CONFUSION
NO HELICOPTERS YET
YOU ARGUE THAT IT’S NO DELUSION

YOU WORE ME OUT
LEFT ME FOR DEAD
YOU KEEP YOUR FEARS
OUTSIDE YOUR HEAD
ALL COVERED UP
WITH YOUR TWO HANDS
YOU PICK MY WOUNDS LIKE KICKING CANS

THE TWO OF US ARE STRANGERS
BABY, ON A RAFT AT SEA
I SEE THE GIRL IN YOU
BUT YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW IT’S ME

OUTRO

NO HELICOPTERS, BABY.....

NO HELICOPTERS YET
THE SKY LIGHTS UP
YOU CRAZY LADY
DON’T WANT TO UNDERSTAND
YOU’RE MUMBLING
YOU’RE CRAZY, BABY

NO HELICOPTERS YET
THE SKY LIGHTS UP
YOU CRAZY LADY

NO HELICOPTERS...

NO HELICOPTERS....

Interesting song
Very cool! It reminds me of something between DEVO and the Talking Heads. That synth noise that panned around at about 2:00 was freaky. Nice one!

something between DEVO and the Talking Heads
Man, you are perceptive. When I wrote this song I was actually standing in between DEVO and the Talking Heads.

Just kidding.

Thanks for listening Eddie!

Excellent!
Great to have a 'new' song. Excellent production. The synth sounds reminded me a bit of The Cars. The lyrics are great!

great idea as, of course, it is impossible to say who's really crazy.

I like how you take your time between verses, as befits the situation of your characters

The echo on the outro is dramatic.

Who's Really Crazy?
How much salt water does a man ingest before the idea of drinking urine is a better choice?

I took my time between verses and I'm glad it worked. The song was originally about 3 minutes long, but I kept copying/modifying sections and spacing things out. It's a vast ocean, so I tried to be vaster. Huh?

Thanks cj

Another crazy
what is it with crazy songs today?

This is great Bob. Slightly mad and I like the juxtaposition between the declamatory vocal delivery and the electronic backing.

Cheers

Whoop ...
... you just dialled up 1979 on the megasynthophone didn't ya? Very Tubeway Army, very authentic and very cool. I like this a lot. Your voice and delivery are superb and the instrumentation very well balanced. Ace.

Megasynthophone
I have one of those out in the garage that I use on songs like this one. It's gas powered, so I can't bring it inside.

Tubeway - another of my most favorites ever.

Thanks Paddy!

helicopters
I find that you wait ages for a bus and then 3 turn up at the same time.
It's a bit like that with helicopters :-/
This a great a great piece of electro pop and great use of sounds.
You always seem to come up with the quirkiest lyrics and use your vox to great effect with the splitting and 'call and response' type.
Mad , cool track
Enjoyed

Quirky
I imagined the madness of being afloat for a long time, waiting to be rescued.

I'm trying harder to make my "declamatory vocal delivery" (thanks DWL) sound better. I actually deleted tracks and recorded the vocals again.

"Say it isn't so, Bob."

"I think he's lost his mind"

kicking your can
dude this is great! the patient approach to the composition pays off, really like how the song builds, new synth sounds dropping in here and there and REALLY (all caps really) like how the backups develop in complexity until everything at the end is swirling around like the sea whipped up by the helicopter blades (sweet tie in to concept huh? i'm the peter travers of MJ).

Patient Approach
You heard an early version (benefits of being 5XA fan club treasurer) and it was too crowded to paint the proper picture. I am so glad you guys agree on that. I appreciate it.

Far out concept. I love the unrequited love song, but I'll admit it's overdone. The couple-lost-at-sea-helicopter-delusion song is refreshing. And only you could do it this properly. This is probably as normal as you get. The African shaker/claps thing are a pleasant organic surprise in your usual robofeast. I'd help you build an ark any day.

Thanks Eric,

Everyone of you guys continue to write better and better songs. I'm convinced that knowing you all will make me a better songwriter in itself.

and this song. Noah... what a freak and a man of God. I've got a helicopter song too but haven't written it yet... still rolling around in my head and it is from the perspective of the pilot. I salute you on the self-fav, brave!

I can't wait to hear your helicopter song. It's a good open subject matter and I think everyone enjoys a good helicopter tune.

Synth
I love the way you work those synths, I like that all the lyrics are in caps, I think there is more than one story going on in this song. The singing has this back and forth quality nice phrasing Tops again! I on the other hand am the guy flying the helicopter :)

LYRICS IN CAPS
Tim,

I print the lyrics in caps so I don't have to wear my peepers while singing. The headphones are new and tight and they squish my head!

So could you just drop us a line and pull us to safety please?

You Took Your Time
With the lead-in to this tune, which I really respect, especially given that I'm not brave enough to do it myself. Taken with your text intro in its entirety, this is a perspective on relationship discord that I guarantee I've never heard before! Very intriguing, even without the theological element above...

Take Your Time
Hey Michael,

Thanks for the listen and for the valuable feedback. As I worked on this song, it became apparent I needed more space between parts. If I followed my standard song writing rule (write it/record it/post it before I go home), this would've been a 2 minute song. I guess my lack of free time kept me from rushing in and out of the song writing process. I've noticed a few of my "favorite" songs took over a week or a month to finish, meaning, 10 minutes here, 30 minutes there, etc... I end up listening to it enough to figure out what will make it better.

Oh, and if I didn't mention the Noah's ark think I would've had to do another drawing! The ark put me in the water waiting for a rescue and my mind took it pretty far from the bible story.

What kind of mind...
... goes from Noah to helicopters, and then makes a song out of it? Your's I guess!

Great synth sounds and an interesting parallel to explore - being the only one to believe (God and helicopters imminent arrival). Well constructed and great build-up throughout.
