Description
A redo of an ESQ-1 track I did back in the 80's (original is here - http://www.macjams.com/song/11709). Recorded using Logic Pro with 4 different Mbira samples, and percussion and voices from JamPack World and other sources. Intro and Outro are from the Korg M3 (Amazon Expedition combi)

Stretching the deadline for MJRF, aren't you? Very fun... nice placement of choir, flute, bangs, etc... very hypnotically pretty.

Well, time flies
when you aren't paying attention. Actually I finally figured out what to do pretty much on the 14th. Then I had to rescue the MIDI files from an old laptop running Opcode Vision. Somehow one of the flute lines was weirdly transposed into a random key. Anyway, happy to revisit an old tune.

How well I remember....
Stumbling upon the Mbira and sakura pieces from this guy Bubowski back in the day and taking it upon myself to spread the word... I think I sat down on an afternoon or two and just listened to everything you'd posted... I always loved the excellent samples and tonalities with which you worked, Graham, and the fact that regardless of style or instrument chosen, you invariably had, and have, an excellent sense of taste and musicality...

I still look forward to anything you turn out, whether it be music or a song comment, and would wish for more of it....

Ed

Hey Ed
Always appreciate your comments. It's been tough setting aside time to write. Trying to get my older guy set up for college and working pretty much filled up my time. Hopefully this summer will be a more productive time. Sure seems like a long time though since those early days, doesn't it?

I like this a lot
This is a really enjoyable track, Graham. It just picked me up and carried me away. Very well constructed, performed, and produced - the sound is pristine. Four and a half minutes is a nice sized piece, but I would have stayed with this for ten more. I really enjoyed the listen. It goes into my iPod, for which thank you. Really, really fine piece of music here.

Could use...
a little more finessing I think, but I just ran out of time. Maybe will revisit it again and add a full on unpitched african percussion section.

soo...
Your description is filled with words that I don't understand. ESQ-1...MBIRA...Korg. However, this is a beautiful and fun piece of music to listen to. What was your inspiration behind it? That's what I wanna read in the description. :-)

Just inspred by certain sounds
I have this old synth that I got back in the eighties called an Ensoniq ESQ-1. While messing around with it I found this sound that was similar to an African instrument called an Mbira (they are sometimes called a Kalimba in the US, or African Thumb Piano). So I just kind of took off just based on that sound and built a sort of African feeling theme off of it, adding wood flutes, log drums and marimbas. The Korg reference is to a new keyboard I bought about a year ago that has the most incredible sounds (http://www.macjams.com/song/57687).

Enjoy
the nature sounds with the african sounds! The nature sounds open up the Mbira sounds quite nicely. Like how you keep the wonderful african feel throughout. Love the dreamy like feeling, I think this is my fav of yours!
Way to go!

Thanks Bill!
Good to hear from you! The whole intro (before the Mbira comes in) is played in real time and is actually only a few notes, the M3 pretty much did all the work (except for coming up with the ideas of course)

Loved this
Great choice of samples and a very cool buildup throughout. Don't know why, but somehow the beginning impressed me the most - I listened to a few different percussive interpretations in my head before you set the mood and rhythm for the track with the djembe.
Lush, saturated and full of colorful energy - another track of yours worth listening to more than a few times.

Rhythm
That's the cool thing with that ostinato, the rhythmic structure is pretty indeterminate until the djembe starts playing. I may mess a little more with the choral sections to have the enter less abruptly and build up a bit more.

Esq-1!
Love that ESQ-1 Ensoniq keyboard. As you know, I have one. This track sounds very good. Nice round sounds. Full spectrum. No chafing. Sounds like a jungle run to me wearing a hi-tech luge suit.

Mbira
Graham, beautiful comp. I'm a little in awe at your ability to squeeze every nuance out of the M3. It adds a lot of depth and you did a great job blending it with the samples. I know realize I own a Mbira! a small handcrafted one I picked up traveling somewhere in Asia I think. Even tho I think its a native instrument from Africa. Its in the den and I always grab it and work my thumbs sore when I want to chill.

Great that you were able to sort out the one flute line that decided to go rogue :-).

Cool little Instrument
Mbira...I wish I had a real one laying around just to mess with between meetings. Thanks for the comments. Most of the sound in this track is actually from Logic (EXS and various other plugins). The M3 handles the complex pad/sound fx/low marimba at the beginning and end - but it really blends beautifully with all the soft synths in logic nicely.

Very cool
and an excellent revisit. I remember the original (in fact, I left the last comment in Dec. '08): I fave'd and downloaded and still enjoy it whenever it comes up on my iPod. Now I'll enjoy this one too. A lot ;-)

well done here. These sounds really capture a mystical Amazon type vibe. I love how clear and clean everything is... and that haunting flute. Very cool.
