Soundcheck

Description
Another RPM tune, hoping to get them all finished tomorrow (we'll see). This one is more of a vibe than an actual pop song. I called it soundcheck as it sounds like a jam during soundcheck that may or may not become an actual song. I wrote it for the kids I work with. I was thinking of how a big part of my job is just to bear witness to the lives of some that will undoubtedly die unnoticed.

Lyrics
It's killing me to watch you die alone
It's killing me to watch you live like that
It's killing me to watch you die in the streets
It's killing me to watch you cry alone

oooh oooh
ooh oooh.....

It's killing me to watch your friends go away
It's hard to watch you as you live each day
It's killing me to watch you die alone
It's killing me to watch you live that way

oooh oooh....

It's killing me to watch you die in the street
It's killing me to watch you live like that
It's killing me to watch you die all alone
It's killing me to watch you die like that

ooh oooh....

It's killing me to watch you die alone
It's killing me to watch you die alone
It's killing me to watch you die alone
It's killing me to watch you die alone

Neat!
Cool indie rock. Really like the drum pattern and acoustic guitar. I would have liked the excellent vocals up a bit though, but actually that may take away from the dreamy quality it has to it...
Thumbs up!

Really cool, laid back feel to this.
Echoes of Radiohead ( when they wrote 'proper' songs).
I did feel that the intro could have been shortened a bit and maybe a middle 8 wouldn't have gone amiss..but that's just my preference.
I like the tone on the electric guitars and your vox give off the sad and world weary tone of the lyrics.
Enjoyed, cheers

thanks man. you know, you are absolutely right about the middle 8. I am putting that on the "if i have any time left when I finish mixing" list. would probably be easy to just move some bits around. tahnks for the comment (and idea).

I often think about the challenge of your job
you managed to convey the darker side of your experience really well here. I like the sound check quality of the recoding. I think this RPM thing is a good way to explore simpler songs that are no less effective. Good luck with the rest of your project - I know you'll make it.

thanks Kevin
yeah, this is a whole other approach to songwriting (under the barrel). reminds me of recording with indie rock bands and having a weekend to record and mix a whole album. then of course there are the inevitable "wow that's not so good, we should write another one."

Michael, this is just so impressive to me in so many ways. I especially agree with Kevin about how you convey they sometimes heartbreaking nature of your work, in music. i don't know HOW you are doing this RPM challenge, but you're doing it so well!

Heavy
Just read your comment and the lyrics before listening and blew my mind. The music seems to have a light feeling, opposite to the lyrics. The combination is... well, a killer (no pun intended). Sort of Freddy Johnston vibe in that sense.

thanks for listening man. the music is a little lighter sounding, but for some reason feels melancholy to me. kind of like my job: a fun bummer. I will check out Freddy Johnston (never heard him). Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

i like
the soundcheck concept. i always used to sing songs in soundcheck that i wanted to sing as part of the set but never fit (or i didn't have the guts to sing). it was fun. i also like the idea of a songwriting session where everybody's just throwing ideas around and you hook onto this one stanza and jam on it a while. that's what this reminds me of - that one really good stanza that says everything you want it to and to add to it would be to dilute it. cool little song.

haha
you got it exactly. getting in a room with some people and just hammering one idea to death. a half hour of the same part over and over, with everyone overplaying, trying to coax out something juicy. thanks man.

Funny how....
an unplanned song can become "a song."

Love the backup vox chorus. Guitar, your vocal... the whole thing is enticing and interesting.

You make 'em good.

This gets straight to the heart of it...
Really solid, lean arrangement and really full recording...

I love your vocals on this... Lyrically and melodically right there....

I'm enjoying the heartfelt lyric and vocal delivery. Drums, guitars, all are sounding great here. Wish my "soundchecks" were as good as this.

You make it look so easy Michael.

Everything you've posted for the RPM deal just works so well in my ears. This is an incredible tune.

I like the lack of a bridge
in this tune: I think the repetition here gives the song its intention and momentum. Apart from that, this song feels emotionally effective and well-crafted; so impressive that this arrived so quickly, with so many others...

rpm
crap. I haven't been checking my hotmail account (where my MJ notifications go) so I have like 30 songs from my favs to catch up on. Starting here. Wow. This sounds great. hypnotizing, spaced out. Conveys the difficult lives of your clients and how it can affect you. That acoustic sound is phenomenal. Like the early Beck records. How'd you do it?

Great tune
We have more in common than I realize.

This is a very powerful song Michael... bring up the guitars a touch they don't sit as high in the mix as they appear to with the head phones on. Or maybe pull the drums back a little. Good luck my friend.
Peace

Soundcheck
So, I've been spending this day off listening to MacJams songs I've missed, and I didn't want to comment on songs that have been on here for quite a while, but something you said really struck me. You said that a big part of your job is to bear witness to lives likely to end unnoticed.

The saddest reason I've ever read about why we get married/have a life partner is that we do it to have someone witness our lives.

Wanting someone to remember us, to notice us - our suffering, our tribulations, as well as our victories, beauty, talents - is human. And you are a compassionate man to know that you when nothing else is left for you to offer someone, you can offer them that.

Anyway, with your description, just the opening chords were enough to well up emotion in me. Your vocals, as always, are beautiful because they are full of the intention and imagination that created the song.

Thanks,
Estella
