Zophy's X-Ray Eyes (v2)

Description
After an extended period of serious creative block I'm back in the studio with several songs in the works. This is the first, it's been in my head for a week and I've recorded it this morning in about 3 hours. It's about CCTV, being watched, feeling protected by those that spot the trouble. I work with these people and they are amazing.
I went for a big guitar sound here, I wanted that circular guitar/drum feel you get on Buffalo Tom records. The vocals in the chorus have been compressed using a Liquid Mix 16 from Focusrite - I love what this little box of tricks can achieve.

man you do like your drama :) i like the balls out singing on this one, gives it a great live feel. also love how the instrumentation wraps around the chorus. And that solo is nice and quirky. tons of mood in this one man, you should work on a rock opera...

Drama
Yeah it's pretty dramatic! My intention had been to record a little acoustic number I had planned. Somehow I changed direction! Thanks for the words man. A rock opera? Now there's a thought ...

Chorus
Yeah the chorus is the part I'm most proud of, particularly the build into it. It all happened organically in the recording process which is how I like it. Thanks for the pimp in the forums too.

Zophy's X-Ray Eyes
Great depth and presence on the guitars. Vocals sound great here, especially with the harmony on the chorus.

Guitars
As I always do with new software (on this occasion upgrading to Logic Express 9) I explored the guitar amp sims and found one called "Brontosaurus". Well that was like a red rag to a bull! I simply had to try it out and this is the result! Thanks for the kind words.

Excellent
sound you've got here Paddy... the voice soars beautifully above the instrumentation... I didn't expect something so peaceful and almost dreamlike when you mentioned CCTV cameras being the source of your song. Lyrics and harmonies are great, cheers M

Dreamlike
That circular drum groove was the start point. The CCTV song was originally going to be a spiky punk number but then I found that groove, cranked the guitars up to 11 and the inevitable happened!

Great sound
Thanks. I deliberately boosted the reverb having recalled that Buffalo Tom recorded one of their albums in a church. I wanted a semi live sound, which is hard with only one of me!

STRONG!
Amazingly your vocal holds up to the extremely thick and loud mix. Nice job.

Vocals
Ha. The fact I can barely talk this morning is proof of how much I gave to those vocals! Thanks for the props.

CCTV
This song has a serious build and emotional arc without tipping over into chaos or frenzy. Drumming has a great organic vibe, guitars show a real dynamic range, and when the chorus finally comes it feels full and triumphant. This song rewards multiple listens too--nice way to unblock your creative processes.

Multiple listens
Thanks Michael, for your thoughtful critique. The drumming is a jazz loop I slowed down and sliced and diced, with some midi augmentation. I like "triumphant" that's a great adjective for the chorus. Glad you're digging the tune.

Wall-o-Guitars
Huge sound, man. HUGE. Cool theme for a song, too. Lyrics can be literal or ironic and I think that's cool to leave them so open. Nice one, brother!

Ear candy
Nice beat to start things off and the bass set the mood. Really big n brave vocals. It takes some doing to nail those big drawn out lines and you did it!
The solo was super cool and kind of reminded me of coldplay-ish.
Nice work a real treat for the ears!

Phat!!
Nice thick tone! and good production to get the vocals to stand out. Nice singing - how do you manage to do it without pissing off the neighbours? Cool.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
