Hot, Like Laura Ballance

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
A slice of indie rock, influenced by "Our Noise, the story of Merge Records" and my own erstwhile indie-kid past. Anyone who was ever an indie kid will remember that girl, the alternative chick with dreads or pink hair, piercings and torn stockings. Your mum would't approve but you thought she was hot, like your favourite NC band's bassist - or may be even Darcy from the Pumpkins.
I've had the title of this tune in my head for about 3 months and it needed some extended listening to "No Pocky For Kitty" to get inspiration for how this should sound. I've mic'ed up my Line 6 Spider III for this one, placing it in our bathroom for the three guitar parts. I'm quite pleased with the guitars again here.
Play loud and reminisce, or if you're a young indie-kid, just ask her, she will say yes!

Lyrics
She worked in the record store
She wore a Seaweed t-shirt as she handed out the vinyl
She's an indie queen with her rings and two tone hair
I'd love to put her on a poster on my wall

She's a small town princess and she's gonna turn your head
The kind of girl that causes an accident
She don't look like Scarlett Johannsen
But she's hot, y'know, like Laura Ballance

I saw her at the Weezer show
Holding hands with a wannabe Motley Crue
My indie queen with her cool Chapel Hill Collection
I want to save you from them all

She's a small town princess and she's gonna turn your head
The kind of girl that causes an accident
She don't look like Scarlett Johannsen
But she's hot, y'know, like Laura Ballance

Merge Records
I lived in Chapel Hill for a while in the late 1990s, when Merge Records had its headquarters in a cool old coffee roasting factory--I had the singularly embarrassing experience of walking in looking to buy coffee, only to be told by a girl who looked a lot like the subject of your song that I was in the wrong place.

You matched subject and style perfectly here. Love what you did to get the guitar tones here: sounds just right to me. And the indie harmonies on the chorus are casually pretty: so nice!

Coffee 'n' records
I guess anyone coulda made that mistake! Thanks for the kind words. Seems lugging the amps round the house wasn't such a stoopid idea now ...

Indie til I die
I can do rock, grunge and I like a bit of country and a bit of metal, but I will be indie til I die!

just ask her
she will say yes? Damn. I missed the boat. But this song is as good as the trouble you can get in. Great lines. "I'd love to put her on a poster on my wall". Know the feeling. And how heartbreaking she was holding hands with a wannabe Motley Crue. Can't tell if that's worse than holding hands with an actual Motley Crue. Anyway, guitars do sound tops. Love when those drum hits pound in at the beginning. Sets the tone just right.

Motley
Wannabe or otherwise, spandex and hair is just bad news. The only makeup I wanna be wearing are the lip prints on the collar my Lotion t-shirt

There's no shame in it. I'm a fully paid up member of the "if you've hard of 'em I don't like 'em anymore" club" - or I was anyway!!

Alternative beauty
My formative years predate indie rock, but heavy metal chicks had the same kind of attraction for me. Unfortunately not to me. Or maybe fortunately, in retrospect.

Anyway, good song. You paint a very vivid picture.

Heavy Metal Chicks
Yeah they rock. They dress cool too. I guess we all have our ideals. I'm keen on 50's/punk crossover chicks like Kim Shattuck too!

Pumpkins...
Great tune Paddy - My songs don't seem to get any further than the titles these days. Like the way you've miked-up the guitars - not sure that I'd get away with taking over the bathroom as well - the house is full of my clutter already.

Melody/vocs are working great here. Nice harmonies. Guitar lines sound cool, and you're getting great tone. Now you have to find the chick that it's about and play it for her!

The cool thing
... about indie chicks is that everyone had a shot. They were cool not because they were indie, but because they eschewed traditional machismo in favour of guys with some brains. Well that's what my girlfriend tells me!

Very cool
This is really good stuff. I've got to admit I've never heard of Laura Balance or Superchunk until now. Man I must lead a sheltered life.

Good one!

playing guitar in the bathroom
sweet! i love the idea of moving stuff around the house to get a different sound. great picking between the chords on this one, you're expanding your sonics dude. cool harmonies too...kind of like the ataris (hey i like the ataris, everybody lay off). solo is great too - cool tone - and i like the way you transition back into the singing...ragged but not too ragged. this will make a great addition to the ipod, i'll put it right in with here's to shutting up...

Nothing wrong
with the Ataris! Glad you liked the picking. I have to work hard at barre chords as my left hand is still kinda recovering from a serious injury. Picking out those notes in the quiet spots really lent the whole thing some space. I was trying to get as much out of the one guitar track as possible. Glad you enjoyed it man - hoped you would!

Perfect?
Meh! But I'll take it. I set out to craft as good an indie rock song as I could manage and it seems people like it. So that's a perfect result. Thanks for the props man.
