Acting So Strangely (with ParticleDots)

Description
This song was originally on the RPM challenge record I did last month. As with the other songs, it consist of harmony vocals, acoustic guitar with digital icing laid on top. While doing it, I kept thinking of Brian Eno, Air and the Beach Boys. I thought of how it would be really cool if Bryn was involved with it and after the challenge was over sent him the files.

You don't get to hear Bryn sing very often, but on this track he is all over the place doing the Pet Sounds bom-bum-bom backups. Very tasty additions BTW. He also laid down a beautiful Solina part and re-mixed it so that it actually had some some sonic quality to it. I love what he did to it, and hope you do as well.

The song was written about a friend I had that had a manic episode when we were on tour. Things had gotten really out of control, and it wasn't possible to continue on the tour. He didn't know that he was losing it, and I flew back to LA with him and handed him over to his father so he could be hospitalized. The whole trip home, he kept making up these numeric systems in his head that "explained" everything in the universe. That was years ago, and he's fine now (meds really do work miracles).

Fantastic track - I loved the original
but this is just way over the top. Bryn's work is truly amazing - I had the pleasure of his company for a month while you were working alone on your CD. The Eno Air Boys is the perfect description and you guys sound so good together.

BTW - the rest of you guys and gals - Michael's RPM CD is excellent - chock full of cool tunes.

Acting so Strangely
Man, the description sounds intense. You must have been more than a little freaked. Glad to hear he's doing Ok now. The song has a very cool trance like quality to it. Eno-esque. Much enjoyed. Kudos to you both.

Wow
I just listened to that Rabbit Ears Motel album today at work. This is a great re-imagining. I probably wouldn't have been able to point out that it was the same song - even just hours apart. So many tasty bits. Me thinks Bryn is going to get an inbox overload of collab requests. Love the beats. When does the Michael2 tour diary come out? a la "Get in the van"? Hell of a read that would be.

yeah
Bryn is a force to be reckoned with (and hell of a nice guy). so glad you liked. the beats were a sample I have of an old organ (i think). thanks for checking out the whole record too BTW. glad you're feeling better.

Eno meets the Beach Boys
You got that right. You guys did some excellent work together one this. Really mellow tune. Sets a very laid back vibe.

Enjoyed.

nice tune
But I think I prefer the synth stuff in the other version. It's sort of high frequency buzzy-ness really gets into my brain and seems to be what it's all about more. This one is mellow, but it makes me more aware of the ticky-tack drum machine beat for that reason, which is probably my least favorite part of the song. I do get the Eno vocalization reference and I always loved that sort of thing but I think the original version resonates more with me than this second (and still very good) version. Excellent harmonizations very well done...more like Smiley Smile than Pet Sounds, like "Vegetables" perhaps?
Maybe it would be nice to hear an acapella version of this, without the drum machine?

funny
last night Bryn sent me a gaggle of acapella versions that he had put together. thanks for the listen Jim. I get what you're saying. I always enjoy how there is no such thing as a "final mix" when you record on your computer. back in the day when you scrimped and saved to get some studio time, the final mix truly was final.

I'm a big BB fan, and this is a little like a lost song from Smiley Smile. I also hear your usual Beatles references in there as well - fantastic post.

You (and Bryn) are among...
...those here who make cool stuff look easy....

I love the Bryn and Michael vocals, and the 'ambient lite' treatment, and the full simplicity of the arrangement.... Nicely simple bass really works here...

It's just a great listen...

Somehow I missed the original
But I love this one--somehow I think Brian Wilson would as well if someone shared it with him through his drugged-and-manic haze.

cool
this is really nice. I like this a lot. it also sounds (apart from the Eno/Air etc) like something from REM's UP album or a Minus 5 album. You sound a little like Scott McCaughey here. Nice.

like a warm ocean
Just luxuriating in the peaceful calm of the surf. Certainly has all the elements of the muses you mentioned. The drum machine is pleasantly up front and clean while the reverb synth washes all the other sins away.

impressive and
very much so. the wooshing synth sounds, the delicate singing and the overall mellow 70s synth-pop feeling. maybe for the two of you that is normal, but for me getting delicacy out of a pair of speakers is not the easiest of tasks. pro mixing i guess. what got me the most though, was the overall feel and subject of the song; that 70s "easy going" vibe that i just love (easy going to the p-ward...). well done gentlemen!

I'm almost speechless. This is some pro work fellas. I love everything about it! My only small quip is that maybe the drums could use some more variety but jeesh, the whole production on this is quite nice. The vocals are great. Such a great track to end the night to. What an interesting back story also! That must have been an emotional trip taking your friend home to his dad to be hospitalized. I couldn't imagine. Thanks for sharing this. Fantastic stuff!
