Lyrics
Chelsea

I met a man at a bar in Chelsea, and we talked about life as a whole;
about girls, and jobs, and life and death, about Thomas Wolfe and his soul
We walked the streets of Chelsea, down to the river up by the Lincoln Tunnel
We sat down on a the ground and smoked ourselves: silly-crazy-happy!
The night was still young…

Chelsea, oh, Chelsea, the night belongs to us
Helsinki, Rawhide, we view the city from up top
Chelsea, oh Chelsea, you are such a babe
All I can think about now, is how I can get back to you again...

I met a few friends at bar in the Village, and I mostly sat there and listened,
because the stories being told where so sweet to my ears,
it was a true pleasure being there
And I met this other friend from Brooklyn, and he was as nice as I always knew,
he gave me a tape, from the years in hell, and I watched it, and I instantly knew:

Chelsea, oh, Chelsea, the night belongs to us
Helsinki, Rawhide, we view the city from up top
Chelsea, oh Chelsea, you are such a babe
All I can think about now, is how I can get back to you again…

Fantastic song, the chorus is big like our fair city!

Mikki - this is brilliant
Brechtian and feverish as only you can bring it. Excellent instrumentation and killer vocals. So glad to have finally met you and honored to be included here.

Brechtian
I like that. When, if, someone asks me what kind of music I do, I am instantly, without hesitation say: "Um, it's a bit Brechtian..." It was great seeing you, and I am sure we'll see each other again very soon.

Thank you
As I said, it's just a sketch yet, but enough people here and elsewhere seem to like this a lot, so I am for sure re-doing this song when time and mood allows.

Mikki!
I love the European (to my ears German, but only because I don't know much else) atmosphere you get in your songs. Kevin's Brechtian reference certainly rings true for me in your lyrics - I love the way you make what many would consider to be "normal" events into something with depth and meaning.
Another outstanding song Mikki - beautifully done. You write some of the most original and intelligent music here.

Wow, thank you my friend. It may be some German in here, although for sure not intentionally. But, I've always loved some German/Russian vocalists that are close to my own voice. I am just going to keep working on this one - round II coming soon.

Great meeting up
Like a New Orleans dirge. Bizarre musical interpretation of our meeting!! (I was thinking more of a 1978 disco feel, a gayer vibe, you know...)

Anton and I truly enjoyed meeting you at The Spotted Pig and walking around the Village showing you old haunts and telling stories. I'm glad you enjoyed our stories, and look forward to additional meet-ups so you can share more of your stories. Loved you hotel room, the whole Thomas Wolfe vibe, the great wall art. Lots more old haunts to re-haunt, as well. And new haunts to add our ghosts to.

Cheers, friend!

Ha, ha!
I never seek to be predictable! :) The song actually started in NO-way. I had a scene in my head, of being in an orchestra playing at a bar around where we stayed. Okay, so to introduce ourselves to the stage, we actually started about a mile away, outside the club, and sort of did parade to the club while playing and singing... I know, a little weird perhaps, but, I saw it, and it looked pretty cool to me! And yes, there are so many stories, so many to be fascinated and inspired by...

wow!
I found this both satisfying and painful to listen too, but I guess that's the point! I like the way you've layered so much sound on top of each other, but still kept the sound clear. Must have taken a hell of a lot of EQing! The female rnb voice gives it a nice contemporary feel over the Captain Beefheart vibe...

Thank you
It is like a double edge sword, but I think I lean this way in many of my songs. As a matter of fact, there is very minimal use of EQ in this one, straight takes, and a final master EQ. Captain Beefheart, mmmm. :)

Chelsea
A very distinctive arrangement and sound choices. It reminds me of a funeral dirge. Vocs are good, and the backup singer is cool.

Dave
Yup, it does have some funeral tones to it, but it's not a sad song per say, it's more a dramatic, overwhelmed by sightings, traffic, people kind of a song. Like I mention above, it needs to be re-worked, and perhaps in the next round it will stand more clear what I am trying to express.

Knew her well at the Chelsea Hotel
This will supplant the Leonard Cohen song in my mind (or at least significantly supplement it) as definitive ode to the Chelsea Hotel. And although I have a soft spot for some of the lines in Cohen's song ("She told me again she preferred handsome men / But for me she would make an exception") I dare say you did a better job capturing the intensity of downtown nighttime Manhattan than the Bard of Montreal did.

Thank you very much!
That's very nice of you to say. I'd imagine, just like with anything, it would be different if I was living there, but just flying in, stay awake, never sleep, it has a certain impression on yourself!

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street

I like how you've taken this to the next level, not just

I don't know...
there are times that you sound like you are channeling Philip Glass, Adrian Belew or Todd Rundgren... regardless, your music always shines with a whimsical quirkiness that makes every piece individual and a joy to the ears

keep it up!
