Description
I'm back!

This is a little tune I put together in the last 24 hours as I explore Logic Express 9 and Miroslav Philharmonik. This is the first of a series of short, little pieces inspired by Nature. The instruments are a mix of Apple Jam Pack and Miroslav. And my Logic mixing skills leave A LOT to be desired. Bear with me.

For those interested:

Piano - Apple Jam Pack
Piccolo - Apple Jam Pack
Clarinet - Miroslav
English Horn - Apple Jam Pack
Solo Cello - Miroslav

now for the walk...
The piano seems ever-so-slightly muffled, I would have liked it a teensy bit brighter sounding. But other than that, I adore the music itself... surprising little twists and turns of chords, Gorgeous contemplative pause at 2:30, as we stop, turn, and watch the last bit of sun dip over the horizon, and smile and count our blessings for being here.

Lovely piece, Shay. I love those beach walks.

interesting
kate's first observation as my feedback guru was that the piano was muffled, so I switched it from the JP steinway to the Grand on Stage which opened it up quite a bit. anyway, it's interesting that you still hear it as muffled - lol - it's all perspective. this piano sound is very bright to me. thank you for your kind words here. we've been taking many long walks since moving and i'm becoming quite the beach bum.

Gorgeous
I wish I could play keys like this. I too like the contemplative ending. On the beach, with the waves lapping around your feet, the calling gulls circling overhead, looking out to sea and just pondering the vastness of it all. I can do all that just five minutes from where I live.

I love the changes as Drak mentioned. Very cool. I too agree the piano sounded not quite a crisp and clear and I might light... But later on it has a very full sound. I think it just needs some EQ.

Just wonderful
Kassia, I grew up with the beach and the Atlantic practically at my backdoor. I've not been back there for many years. As someone who spent many a wonderful morning walking along the edge of the water just before sunrise, I'm not sure you realize just how marvelously you captured it all for me here: the sites, the sounds, even the scent of the salt water lifting into the breeze (I'm thinking you've had some firsthand experience yourself no doubt!) Exceptional work, truly poetic. Thanks for taking me back in time.

I did not realize you play the French Horn! I love that instrument--in fact I have a friend who plays it with the state orchestra here and and she and I sometimes get together and do some pieces together. I just adore that golden sound!

ironic
I grew up in the area you are now living in - as far from the ocean you can possibly get, but I've recently moved to Northern California and now live within 5 minutes of some of the best beaches in the world. It's always so wonderful to hear that the music has inspired feelings and images - that's sort of the point of it, I guess. Thank you for your very kind words here - and I don't think i've officially offered my welcome to MacJams!

As for the French Horn - I haven't played since college, but I loved playing. It's such a wonderful instrument. Very cool that your friend plays for the orchestra. Someday you'll need to post some of those collabs you do!

nice!
I don't find a lot to pick on in terms of the mix for your profess lack of Logic mixing skills. There is a nice space to the mix. Is this the Steinway Piano from the Apple Jam Pack? I think Logic has a Yamaha piano that is a little crisper, and for sure the Bosendorfer is a nicer sound to my ear, but I'm not sure if that's in Logic Express or just Pro. I think it's in Express under Logic instruments/Acoustic Pianos. I don't have a problem with this mellower sounding piano myself but some people mentioned the piano sounding muffled. This sure is a nice little tune, very much an earworm. In a good way.

Jim
Thanks so much for your detailed comment. You know, I started with the Jam Pack Steinway, then moved to the LE Yamaha, and finally ended up with this one - the Jam Pack "Grand on Stage". I did not see the Bosendorfer in my LE list, but I'll check again. Maybe my next investment should be Ivory pianos! I am especially pleased to hear that the mix sounds ok to you. I had a lot of fun playing around in Logic, but got to a point where things just looked TOO foreign and had to just stop and go with it...lol....I'll get there!

Well, i think the piano sounds GREAT! :) The Miroslav instruments went in here beautifully - love the gentle movement of this peace, and instrument interplay. Shay
I think your mixing skills are just fine. I find too that many times I will use instruments from various sources as the certain quality you are looking for isn't just there in a certain package. This is just a marvelously lovely piece and I find it very comforting, much like a walk on the beach. I don't much like the pianos in Logic and I am always looking for some magic combination that will make them sound right. Is this the Bosendorf? That one sounds better than the Stienway or the yamaha. I think using two together, eq'ed differently might be something to try. That would allow you to add some crispness and brilliance to it without changing the overall character. This is a very beautiful piece though, sorry to muck it up with all the tech talk. My head is just filled with it lately.

Bosendorfer
Shay, I just read some more of the comments. The Bosendorfer is not in the same place as the regular pianos. In the channel strip over the EQ window is the "Setting" tab. Click that and go down the menu to Pianos. There will see a selection of instruments that are not in the browser. I don't quite understand this, it may be because the others are the ones preserved from previous versions or that these are using a different synth engine. A Logic expert will have to tell us.

first of all, thank you so much for the detailed and wonderful comment. I LOVE having several different instrument palettes to pick from - I feel like it gives me so much more freedom in getting the right sounds. As for the Apple pianos, I really have been pretty satisfied by them for the most part - understanding that they are at the low end of the quality spectrum. I HAVE used the double-up thing you suggested, in several of my songs, and found that it works quite well to get a certain sound. It just didn't seem to work for me for this piece. Ah well - it's all part of the wonderful puzzle of composing. Thanks again for your wonderful comments, Stephen!

Yes, that's New Age, but you've managed to transcend the cliches and saccharine that seem to characterize so much of it. This tune just radiates tranquility and an appreciation for nature. The break at 2:30 is breathtaking. It reminds me that there is so much in the world that we perceive as beautiful, and how strange it is that it should be that way.

Oh, so pleasant.
Composition: Beautifully paced; evocative of the setting you wish to portray;nicely orchestrated; the turn at the end (around 3:00)is a stroke of real restraint and thoughtfulness that was unexpected, but thoroughly wonderful.

Tempo: a little metronomic for my own tastes, but I tend to stretch just about everything. Seems, though, that a little more space/breadth/breath would give this beautiful composition a bit more of a naturalness in expression.

Instruments: I have about 30 pianos at my (digital) disposal. This is all such a matter of taste. The one you chose IS a little muffled, but so is the picture you used to accompany this piece. It is all about what sounds good TO YOU. I think this one works well, but others may think it is a little out of tune, too. But perhaps that's where the charm is. ... On the other hand, you've heard the Ivory pianos (German Steinway, Yamaha 7): the best on the market today. Not too expensive, either. Maybe a possibility for you if you are going to be writing a lot of keyboard music. ... The woodwinds in this piece sound a little "plastic" to me. That's probably got to do with a little more fiddling with the dials.

I hope you write a bunch of these nature songs. They are magical and you have such a wonderful sense of how they should be played out.

Paul
wow thank you for this in depth comment. It's funny that you felt like the tempo was a little too fixed...lol...I actually ATTEMPTED to do this song without quantizing it. I played the piano in and then played in the opening woodwinds, and then I got lost and things starting looking way too messy. I did leave the ritards in there to try to make it feel less quantized. next time I will actually NOT quantize and we'll see how that works. Can you give me any tips on how to orchestrate that way?

Ivory is certainly next on my list of software purchases. Until then, I'm pretty happy with the Apple choices. As for the woodwinds, as I learn how to use LE, I will do more massaging of those sounds and hopefully it will help.

Thank you again for your wonderful detailed comment and for all the nice things you say. I very much look forward to, and respect, what you have to say.

When the notes ring....
....they ring very nicely.... The decay and the reverberant space is very full and natural to these ears.... The stereo spread in the mix is very nice...

I hear and appreciate the simplicity in this piece that starts with the piano figure.... simple, but something you can build upon, and as the building happens there's ROOM for things to arrive and depart....

Like that pizzicato thing that pops in there.... My headphones liked that moment very much...

Very good to hear a kassia piece again....

I love detailed comments of a listener's thoughts as you hear the song. Thanks for sharing that with me. It's always so amusing to me to watch things unfold in the comments of a song around some particular aspect (ie. the piano) as everyone has their own opinion. I actually changed the piano sound in this moments before uploading it because it was sounding muffled, and to me, this piano sounds much better...lol...but we all have our preferences and we all hear things differently. The wonderful thing about MacJams is getting all these excellent opinions and suggestions, and learning what I can from it all.

Thanks again for your careful listen and kind words Ed.

Well-named
Lovely piece of music, Shay.

I particularly like the many changes-of-pace, the pauses. You allow the music to breathe and reverberate, especially on the held notes.

Your choice and use of the instruments is excellent. I would encourage you to vary the texture even more, giving each voice a chance to "solo". (One of the reasons I say this is that I was curious about the solo cello sound but didn't hear it very much; it was so well-woven into the general sound tapestry!)

Overall I'd have to say that the mix sounds great. I look forward to hearing your future endeavors with Logic!

awesome
thanks for the great comment Cameron. i very much appreciate what you have to say. When I play piano, of course, there are always lots of changes of pace, but the orchestrating process often squashes them into the timeline. I decided this piece really needed to keep them, and I'm delighted they actually worked out with the other instruments.

I totally agree about varying texture and soloing different instruments, and in my longer compositions I am very deliberate about doing that. Given the length of this piece, and since I haven't done a piano-featured piece in awhile, I made a decision to keep the piano pretty up front, but I completely understand what you're saying.

Thanks again for listening and sharing your thoughts - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I enjoyed listening to this, not from the view of a musician, but a humble fan. So peaceful, warm, and true!!!

beautiful
... very nice, soothing feel and pleasant sound. The only thing that does not fit to me is the title "Beach Walk" because I was most of the time feeling more like flying over the beach rather than walking and went to silent hovering with the feel of no gravity at 2:30 :-)) Thank you

I love your description, and you're right, there is a feeling of gentle flight to the piece. Thank you very much for listening and sharing your thoughts with me.

Beach Walk
Evokes sadness, hope and anticipation within the same phrase. Good complementary instrument choices, and the mix sounds great to me.

you're the first to mention sadness in the piece - i hear it too. not sure where it comes from, but there's definitely a sort of bittersweet feeling. thanks for coming by!

"I`m back!"
Same words said the terminator. :o)
But with a slightly different approach!

A very nice tune, with warmth and depth like watching the horizon in the evening, thinking of things happened long time ago...

24 Hours
You did this in 24 hours? Amazing! And depressing! (Because it takes me so long to write music...)

This is very beautiful; I like the pregnant pause about three quarters of the way through, after which the piano goes into solo mode. I look forward to hearing lots more of your gorgeous music!

Just curious; why a piccolo, not a flute? It sounds like flute-range notes to me, which is why I ask.

Geez Shay!
Always a pleasure. You and Karen never cease to blow my mind.

Like Andy (Awigze) said: "sheer talent and grace."

Be well friend!

nature guide
Obviously the new toys are in the skillful hands of a most sensitive and craftful musician.

I thoroughly enjoyed the beach walk with it's contemplative pauses along the way. It's as if you were pointing out things along the way for us to observe.

We are definitely rewarded with your explorations of your new coloring box. Look forward to your future works.

I think you very carefully panned the instruments and the dynamics here are delightful. The Miroslav clarinet is gorgeous.
