Description
5/4/2010

This instrumental got used as a starting point for a collab with JD Holliday
called Seriously Wrong
If you like "March Jam" I hope you'll check it out.

Old school rocker. All constructive criticism welcomed!

Drums
I got some Drums On Demand loops, and was inspired by this set in particular. This seems like a good way to work. At the very least, the loops serve to educate about how a real drummer thinks and sounds. At best, you end up with a complete track with very realistic sounding drums. There is enough variation in the song sets to customize them to your song. The downside is that every now and then none of the loops really work for where you want to go with the song. This happened here with the ending, although there was an "ending" loop, I didn't feel like it really worked that well with the song, so I just faded instead. Overall, an improvement for me vs programming a part in I-Drum

Bass
I'm using the Scarbee Pre-Bass. This software bass is cool because it models articulations such as slides and trills. Very hard to distinguish from the real thing. Totally beats the GB basses, and the soundfonts I've used in the past.

Structure
Chorus/Verse/Pre-Chorus/Chorus/Chorus Fade. Enough to give an idea of what the song has to offer. Could be adapted to the needs of a lyric.

I could hear a lyric over this
A nice laid back bluesy tune. Has a nice vibe but could use something a little more in places I think. I could hear Alannah singing over this. I think her voice would be perfect. Nice job!

Hi Charles, thanks for the listen, glad you liked. Yeah, I left things a little spare - I figured leave some space for vocs, and other parts might drive off of that. From what I've heard of Alannah, I agree her voice would go well with this tune.

Night in the city....
...that's what this style reminds me of. Very well done Dave, Drums on Demand suits you well, abetted by your most able work! I kind of hear what Charles is saying; a little of a climactic zing (hey for a musician, I really suck at articulating these things!) at the bridge would make a every good track even more memorable--just tear into it at the midpoint! Keep up the good work!

Hi Michael, thanks for the listen. I just listened to your "Mack The Knife" great job on that. What are you calling the bridge here? There is a 4 bar section that builds to the chorus part and ends with a drum fill, I'm calling that the pre-chorus. Is this the section you're talking about?

I really like....
The guitar playing here, especially the acoustic guitar playing... On my headphones, I could even go for a little more of it... The drums do sound good and natural... Count me among those who purchased iDrum but never got things quite right in that software...

I really like the overall feel of this... It could definitely support words...

Drum
The good old school I have to say. I like the sound a lot and also the chord progressions ... classic! The only thing - I would pan the lead g. probably to the left a bit. The two guitars sound to me like playing from one spot. As for the drums, did you consider pencil? I did whole songs with just moving mouse and determining every beat. Maight need more time to do that, but once you get skilled in it you can eaasily do endings that suit exactly your needs. The most important thing when you do this is to change the volumes on different beats, othervise it sounds like a machine. Nice work!

Hi Honza, Thanks for the listen, and for the detailed comment. Glad you liked this one. I've done more with panning on past songs, but when I did it, folks around here told me to move it back to the center! I think your idea would work, but I might need some keys, maybe a Hammond B3 to fill up the center before moving the guitar out. Come to think of it, vocs would fill up the center, and then I'll definitely need to pan. I did start out with the pencil, but moved away from it, both because of a lack of good crash sounds in GB, and also b/c it was taking too much time to come up with realistic sounding fills. Nice job on "Around The World", great guitar work on that one!

Hi Dave
Starting right on or about 00:42--that part there! I'm listening again and thinking maybe just bringing the guitar up in volume in that section would be what I'd suggest---bring it up to a crescendo and then down again for the final chorus (another idea I just had). Take it easy now, MJK

The drum loops really do provide a good soled beat to work off with enough variation to make them interesting. It reminded me of that song "Black velvet" from way back. Good basis for a vocal though. Cheers mark

March Lamb
A suggestion, not that ya need it, but more because your introductory comments says- you are expectin'... make the software conform to your ideas.
Instead of fading out, make the re-write, shape the loop to conform with what you are hearing in your head. In a sense this is what you would do in a studio. The drummer is dreaming of this or that thing, a million miles from the job at hand. You have to get his/her attention and make them play what you are lookin for instead of the "programed" response...
In this case you can't even hurt the drummers feelings by suggesting the part aint rolling, ya just tweek the beat yourself.

Hi Daug, Thanks for listening, and for your suggestion. I think that it might be more feasible to tweak the part if it were a midi loop, instead of an audio loop. I'm hearing a tom fill with some crashes, I don't think that combo of sounds is even available elsewhere in the set to start cutting & pasting. I've actually done this elsewhere, but only in the context of, for example, replacing a double kick beat, with a single.

I'll take another helping of that Jam, please
Very cool jam Dave and yes, the drums are working. I've thought about buying Drums on Demend a few time but never have done it. This might make me go out and spend a few bucks on it.

Having to do with the limitations of GB drums, you might want to consider the Rhythm Section JamPack Apple sells for 79 bucks. There are all kinds of drums there in different genre that I've been able to use in all kinds of songs. They work well and the price is right. There are also all kinds of other rhythm instruments in it like Bass, Guitar, keys and a lot of others. Lots of material to build with. I bought it and have never been sorry I did.

Great jam Dave and like I said, I'll take another helping please.

Great bones; add more fat and it'll sizzle!
Sounds good... keep going! As to your cutting this one short and fading it out, I think the only reason you felt that way is that you didn't hear how in-the-pocket your playing really is. I think if you fatten-up the guitars with some OD or amp sim, and maybe a touch of multiband compression -- add a little mid and bottom (above or around the 200 Hz point where the bass would get buried), you'll do a 180 on your attitude. The performance is all here, and the mix is well balanced. So the bones are good, just add fat!

As for Loops, I'm a relative luddite... definitely a rookie in that department. They're a necessary evil I constantly struggle with in lieu of a live drummer in the room. DoD's pretty great. I think Beta Monkey's right up there as well.

Hi Bob, thanks for the listen and for your solid advice. The length of the piece is due mainly that this piece is intended as a sketch, that runs through the 3 sections of the song. The intent was to lengthen it in response to a lyric should one be fitted to it. The fade choice was in response to a lack of a good drum loop to end the piece on. I may end up trying to take this piece to the next level where I'll be able to use some of your suggestions.

You'd think
with all the loops, we'd be satisfied. I know, it just isn't what you're hearing in your head. All of should be taught to play music, at least drums, when we are are kids. It would dissipate all that energy and need to make noise. Really a good tune with a nice rock edge. ( I have no idea what I'm talking about.) I liked it. Yay! Thanks.

I agree that the Scarbee bass is far superior to GB basses, and you used it perfectly in sync with your "drummer". Acoustic and electric guitars played very well and very effectively. I used the room that you left in this nicely open song to jam along with on the piano. Very enjoyable. Nicely done.

I can really feel the groove here, the guitar work is amazing and I was staggered to read that was a software bass. Like you, I often use a drum loop to start a song off, but I often go back and play live midi drums in place of the original loops (though lately Drumcore 3 has served me very well)
This would work well with a bluesy gruff vocal over it. I'd offer to sing it but I'm far from gruff or bluesy!

guitar and bass. Great groove. Too short!

Dave
This groove is too cool. The acoustic guitar work is just great! Tasty. I dig that man. When you evolve this sketch to a song I think you may need a bridge. But it depends how it evolves... Perhaps you can make the song a continuous crescendo, starting with only one instrument (thinking about the acoustic guitar here, but could be the bass and drums together too) and then building up the crescendo to the max ending in the bridge... 4 bars of the acoustic again and explode everything full throttle into the final chorus. Hey, I surprised myself, that could be cool :-)

Drum loops are great for inspiration and ideas. But when inspiration and ideas try to push the loop beyond what it is... crap.

One thing I do with drum loops when I want to twist them is convert the loop to midi, and then work on that now in midi terms. I bought EzDrumer (the basic version) so the midi track still sounds "acoustic" and powerful.
If you are interested on how to convert a drum track to a midi track drop me a msg. It takes a little bit of time, but it gave me really good results, and it's easier and less time consuming than editing waveforms.

Hi Billy,
Thanks for coming by and for your extensive comment. This song is being used as a starting point for a collab with JD Holliday, so I hope you'll check it out when we post. I agree with you on the bridge, the collab with JD, called "Seriously Wrong" does have one.

Hi Deme,
Thanks, glad you liked "Seriously Wrong". I have a couple more in the works I'm not entirely happy with. Hopefully I'll be able to fix them.

Lyrics...
Yep. Could use 'em. A number of others have said so, too. This is a VERY STRONG rhythm track and I hope you will develop it even more. Is is, too, extremely short...With a lyric, you'll be forced into telling a story, and that should net you a good 3:30 -- 4:00 song. Perfect. You've got all the fixin's for it.

Martin D-18 and Fender Strat
That's not a combination you hear everyday. I had to look at your hardware list because I was liking the two contrasting guitars. Bass and Drums are sounding great too.

Anybody Sound Like Lindsay Buckingham?
I hear a Fleetwood Mac vibe and can picture one of the their male vocalists adding some punch.

there it goes
loved it right out of the gate, love that loping bass rhythm. Reminds me a teeny bit of Alan Parsons for some reason. I see that this has marched on into a different song long ago, will check it out too... oh, it is gone!
