Sleep - w/ Len Gold

Description
RG Paddler:

Well its been a real pleasure working with Len Gold on this song.
I recorded and sent him some simple guitar chords with one verse of lyrics and
he sent it back with some great drums, bass (played in true Len Gold style) and an inspiring extra verse/chorus sung by his niece Aisulu.I finished the last verse then added some accordian, flute, balalaika and glockenspiel.
The lyrics came about because I've always had trouble sleeping, since not doing a regular 9-5 job anymore.

When Aisulu added the second verse,it reminded me of a Brazilian girl I knew called Maria who used to work in a factory near Newhaven,Sussex uk
and she used to complain about her english sailor of a husband being permanently drunk and violent, while she used to work really hard and do lots of overtime to keep things afloat. She always talked alot about how much she would like to go dancing.
Many thanks to Len Gold

Len Gold:

I was very, very happy when Rich asked me to collaborate on this lovely song and gave me free rein to do what I fancied. It just so happened that my niece Aisulu (Becca Johnson's sister)
was asking if she could have a go at singing something. So I just put two and two together and also added some fun lyrics. Really enjoyed doing this, thanks Rich, great fun.

Lyrics
Sleep

(lyrics by Paddler)

Some people travel the world
Others they love to roam
I never do any of these
I just like sitting at home
You tell me tales of espionage and deceit
I just boiled a kettle and now
I'll get something to eat

You ask me round
I just stay in
If you go out
Drop by my house
There is a chair and a TV
What do you need?
I need some sleep

I wake up your banging the drums
While I paddle our ship through the smoke
But I'd rather sink in my pillow
Jumping each wave as it comes
You spill my whiskey
And then you expect me to pay
Before you dream was there
Something you're longing to say?

(lyrics by Aisulu,Lengold)

Get out of the bed you lazy sod
We need some food babys crying
Earn some money,couch potato
You call me 'nag'? I'lll show you nag!

I gave you the best years of my life
I gave you your children
And how do you repay me?
With emptiness and confusion
Its not enough I get angry
Stop dreaming,start scheming
Get us out of this hole dear
Or I'll just be leaving

(lyrics by Paddler)

Its funny how things go
I didnt think we'd get in so deep
You've numbered days
While i was just counting sheep

You ask me round
I just stay in
If you go out
Drop by my house
There is a chair and a TV
What do you need?
I need some - Sleep! - Sleep!

Wonderful work guys
Loved the lyrics from everyone concerned.

Great groove and Aisulu shows promise.

Reminds me a little of Madness for some reason.

And that washing machine was an inspired touch (or was it serendipity?)

Cheers

Dick

Yo
very cool vibe about this. It has an old age exploration feel to it, a very outdoorsy organic vibe, yet the lyrics contrast the music, love it. great work on this, very well thought out and put together nicely.

thank you Prote' - outdoorsy and organic is very appropiate as ive been trying out an alkaline diet of spinach, almonds, green tea, figs and cider.actually the cider isnt in that diet structure but it kind of worked its way in there! rg

Love this
song Rich - heard it hundreds of times and it just grows better. You are a great song writer and a true and very talented musician. Enjoyed it immensely and also learnt a bit along the way which is always nice.
Also wanted to say how much fun it was having Aisulu sing, she was very nervous but I think we have a new star in her. I hope she gets lots of encouragement to do some more.
Thanks again.
Cheers
Len

oh no worries len - its probably the drugs or spinach I'm on - just hear something subliminal like a shout or something just there - ive been listening on apple earphones which are pretty loud - probably my incuubus - or doppelganger or one of them things thats supposed to sit around on your shoulder.well it can bugger off.I like it anyway that subliminal sound that only i can hear,-adds some mystery for my brain

I reckon it's the sound that only I can't hear. Like that inner voice everyone else seems to have to stop them eating when they are full. Or to stop drinking when they start feeling tipsy. Or to stop writing silly comments.

Bravo guys!
Sometimes when a lot of elements are added to a piece it gets pretty murky, but you know what you are doing and this was beautifully crystallized in it's clarity. I know Len's work and he is a pretty imaginative and creative artist and I think with you he's met his match! This was delicious, right up to the cute ending. Thanks to you both (and Aisulu!) for this--I greatly enjoyed it! Michael

its hard to judge creativity i always found.I hated 'take that' but i got a request in the hotel tonight to play some song by them i dont know for someones daughter.i apologised and said 'I DON'T KNOW THAT ONE' and played 2 of their bighits instead - 'i can't remember the titles' - the guy came up later and said 'ok - do you know how to play 'wonderful tonight' by chris de burgh - so i said 'NO' but i know how to play it by eric clapton.he said 'OK.2 strikes and youre out' ; to which i responded 'oh'.What is this? Britains in a recession so if you dont know 'Back in your own backyard' - incidentally only sung by Sammy Davis Junior then you should be cleaning instead.Fuck him - he asked for chrius de burgh so I gave him lady in red.Hard cunt aint i.

shades of ELP....but in a good way. really nice folk vibe. some of the lyrics could be tightened up to sound less clunky, but it's got a nice through line and interesting distractions.

Cool ideas. Like the combination of instruments, they complement each other well. I like songs that tell a story, and having the one verse from a female perspective aids the storyline. Good vocs and production cap this one off.
