Description
Last night I was so psyched by what I was able to do with the solo piano version of Karen's song Confluence (that she so generously shared with me) - that I posted this song without checking in with her. I woke up this morning realizing that I might have overstepped MJ etiquette - and took the song down after a few of you were kind enough to comment. Since then I've made sure that Karen is on board with this endeavor and am pleased to be re-posting it - warts and all. You see - I did this quickly and left room for others to collaborate because I think there's something special here that needs to get out fresh and raw. I hope you feel the same.
Contact me if you want to jump in.
Many - many thanks to Karen for her understanding and generosity. Her impeccable timing and lyrical phrasing made this a real pleasure to work on.

Dagnab it....
What's a guy got to do to get his comments to stick around, let alone his 'firsties'?

bud said 2646 days ago (March 27th, 2010)
Well done Ed
I think this tune is the tip of a very large iceberg.

Mind you, I can't remember...
What I wrote last night just before bed.... I still really like this, and the contrast between the high pitched piano and the crunching guitar.... Like the drums, too...

There's a hint of 'Turn To Stone' in this...

Anyway, it starts from a super cool thing (Karen's composition and playing) and ends up in a very different cool place....

up in flames...
whatever I wrote last night... just insert it here :-)

Something about how I really hear "Carol of the Bells in this" which is a good thing. Nice torquing of one style into another!

Cannot wait to see what comes of this!

Sorry for pulling the track
but I wanted to be sure I was doing the right thing. I guess I hear "Carol of the Bells". Now I wish I had the patience to do a better job on this - there's so much good playing in Karen's original that I might have incorporated with more time. Well - next time.

Very very very
cool piece. Its understatement is genius. But I am sure that is also what will be added in abundance in the near future. Looking forward to new renditions of this piece of magic. Now powering down for Earth Hour!

The understatement is me trying to stay out of the way - while at the same time presenting Karen's work in a different frame.

Wonderful you two!
I thought this reminded me somewhat of the scores John Carpenter does for his films, with its sense of ongoing and building movement. Definitely a "visual" piece and performed with great skill! Michael

On behalf of Karen - thanks
I hijacked her music and had a good time re-framing it - I'm glad you like it - but it's really her art that's shining through.

conflagration
I love the treatment you've given the piano here. I also really like the atmospheric sounds going on in the background throughout. This has a pretty cool energy to it Kevin. You've left lots of room for other additions. I'll be interested to hear what other layers get added. Very cool!

A very long loop...
I, like others, am interested in seeing where this might go if others add to it. The initial "information" is rich enough to suggest that the number GO somewhere (perhaps) important. I hear this as the opening of a film score and being used as the underlying mantra that rides through the whole film, little melodic additions enhancing specific scenes when/where appropriate. (I do NOT get "conflagration," however...unless there is an underlying storyline that suggests this title.

The title is perhaps misleading
But I do appreciate your cinematic vision for this piece. We'll see what happens - there's much more to offer in Karen's original piece.

I too hear film scoring as the music suggests several possible moods - but who cares what you do with it - it sounds very cool.

fantastic
Confluence is one of the first pieces I came across while making my first steps @ MJ and I have been fond of it. It's so nice to hear your interpretation, it just gives a different dimension, I enjoyed so much listening, it's wonderful.

PS : If you happen to do the same with one of my songs, I would be happy to see they have a better future :-)

understated power
Totally interesting. Confluence is such an achievement, and what you've done with it is unexpected and very successful. The rhythm structure is both calming and disquieting, and the major and minor theme really works. Echo/delay echo bass and ending are excellent additions. I wish you could substitute the slowed down loop with actual drums. Very cool post!

I agree - real drums would be nice
you know - the major/minor thing was not calculated - it just happened. I'm not that sophisticated - I just liked what I heard when I played the major chords.

Love the piano sound
That's definitely different from Karen's regular grand piano.

Cool track. I would mix the guitar a bit further back in the mix. It stands out a bit much.

Kind of a Spinal Tap moment - you're right
Karen's tone is great - I felt a bit blasphemous distorting it like that - but I was hoping the emotional vibe with the slow down would work.

Sigh.....
can't BELIEVE i didn't comment on this before now. all the conversations we've had about it kevin, it just escaped me that i hadn't said anything to you about it HERE - SORRY! um ... i have to agree that "conflagration" doesn't really seem like the right title, and perhaps by virtue of how well received it was you might at this point agree :). this has been a journey for me, in a good way, an unexpected stretch for which i am actually very grateful. i can't think of anybody at MJ i'd rather get stretched by than you. anxious to hear what APOD does with this, if you guys decide to play with it. this is an awesome work, and i thank you for having this sort of interest in my music. YOU are one fabulous person Kevin!

present or future perfect, your call.
I'm hearing an eerie, bluesish overdriven major/minor slide lead melody track over this. Of course I hear guitar; to the man with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. But that aural imagery suits me fine, as does the present state. Karen's sumpin' else, always got key tricks up her virtual sleeve.

Like the descending phrase with the crunchy guitar, and the windy synth is cool. This piece seems cinematic to me. I can see the hero fireman walking away from the smoldering remains of the building.

to Karen's piece. Slower, darker, windy. It has an early 70's floydish vibe to me. This has a lot of room for many different things. I admire the way you leave things open for others...
