Sometime I Get Drunk

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is a song about a guy who works the Rodeo circuit, and likes to chase women, go Drinkin' when he's not on the circuit. Originally written in 1991 and titled "Ridin in that Rodeo", I posted an earlier version in August of last year, but took it down to do a remix and make a few changes.

I hope you enjoy "Sometimes I get Drunk".

Sometimes I get drunk (Original title "Riding in that Rodeo")

All Rights reserves

Tempo 100bpm key of A

Verse 1

Well I'm Rollin down the highway, chasin' after love
Ridin' buckin' bronks or in a honky-tonk, there's one thing I'm sure of
You won't find love in a two bit bar,
but you can find a dream
All it takes is a little whiskey, and a girl in skin tight jeans

Chorus

I'm been ridden' in that rodeo, trying' to win the prize
Tryin' to get that girl in the honky tonk
the one with the flirty eyes
Some times I do, Some times I don't, some times I get drunk
And end up in the county jail, passed out on a bunk

Instrumental Verse

Verse 2

I've been in every one horse town, from here to Birmingham
I've ridden' bulls and wrestled steers, and tasted lots of sand
When it comes to drinken' whiskey,
and chosen' women down
Hey, that's what I am all about, when this Cowboy coolin' down.

Bridge

Some time you get thrown, face down in the dirt
Sometime you make it, when you can make it work
Sometimes all the ladies that saw you in the show
Want to take you home at night, and never let you go

Chorus

Been ridden' in that rodeo, tryin' na take the prize
Tryin' to get that girl in the honky tonk
the one with the flirty eyes
Some times I do, Some times I don't, some times I get drunk
And end up in the county jail, passed out on a bunk

Tag lines ad-libbed

Yeah, Hey Jailer, I wanna see the High Sheriff
Hey, ain't I got a phone call comin' to me, or somethin' like that, I call my Lawyer
Yeah, Hey when are we gonna eat, Jailer,
I'm gettin' kinda hungry I been in here a long time now
Ya ever gonna feed me
Jailer, are you listenin' ? Jailer, can you hear me ?
Hey Jailer, When you gonna let me outta here.
Damn, in jail again, Oh well

Terrific songwriting chops, I dig songs that tell a story. Awesome country picking here Ed. Vocs are sounding good. Mix sounds perfect.

Glad you liked the song. It was a blast putting this one together as you can probably tell by listening. Ya gotta love those Outlaw Country songs, they're just so raucus.

Thanks for listening and the kind words Dave, I really appreciAte it.

Thanks Craig
Speaking of Country tunes, I actually started to do a little work on the Steel part for your tune "Heartbroken" yesterday. It's been a while since I said I'd do it, and I feel a little guilty about it taking so long, but at least I did finally start on it. Anyway, I'll get something to you once I finally feel what I've done works for the song.

Thanks for stopping in to listen Craig, and for the kind words on it. But I do have to confess that some of what you're hearing is done with loops, especially some of the Steel Guitar stuff. I'm nowhere near that good on the Steel yet, and may never be, but I figure the song's whats important.

Glad you enjoyed the ride, and the song.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Masterful piece of work.
Cross between Johhny Cash,Jimmy Buffet and Alan Jackson. The production is crystal clear and the playing top notch. Great song. I also enjoy story telling songs and this one is a belter. Jarvoid

This one definitely a fun song for me to do. Glad you like what you heard and sent along the kind words on it. That makes the effort worth it, and gives a guy a lot of encouragement. As soon as I get the damned jailer to let me out of here I'll start putting together a few more of the old time Outlaw Country songs.

Be well an. By the way, could you send me some money for my bail. lol;-)

Thanks John
Me too. And as soon as I can raise bail, I'm outta here. ;-)

Glad you enjoyed the song John. I appreciate the listen and the kind words on it. I still have a long way to go before I'll be able to play the Steel Guitar as good as this one sounds in the song, but I keep working on it when I can. The Steel in this is mostly comprised of loop I have to admit. But that said I felt it was a necessary addition to the song to give it the Outlaw Country sound I wanted for the it.

Thanks again for listening John,

Ed

Lovely song...
... I remember it from the CD!

Great performance, both, musically and vocally. My only nit is that the lap steel in the intro seems a bit edited(?), or like faded after every note, if that makes sense. Barely noticeable though!

Good to see you here again...

Thanks Yeman
Actually, about the "lap Steel" intro, that's all made up of loops, and there was no editing done on them. That's the way they were play originally. Thanks for the careful listen and pointing that out for me, I appreciate it. I'm glad you liked the song and how it turned out.
Be well my young friend, and be cool,

Well Dick
all I did was take out the extra chorus at the end, and tweak the mix a little. You probably just had the volume on the stereo turn to 11 when you heard it this time. ;-)

Thanks for coming back to the trough a second time. Glad you liked the new mix and I appreciate the kind words my friend.

Actually Tobin
I learned it from you. After doing my version of "If I could Live Long Enough" , I realized one could use ancient history as a source for modern "High Art" ;-)

Thanks my friend for the kind words and for listening. You are a true craftsman when it comes to this thing we call music and your words have much weight with me. Even your tongue in cheek words.

There was a day when that was true, but sadly it's all in the distant past now. Now it's time for the old farts like me who are stuck in the 70's to get out of the way and let those young whipper snappers take over and have they're day in the sun.

That said I do like how this one came out, even if it is "Old Country". Works for me anyway.

Thanks for listening Vic and the kind words.

Ya know, Scott
I never have been one to like "Fluff" Takes too much away from the real meat of the song if you ask me. Any time you have to use fluff to make a song good enough, you really need to rewrite the song and start over.

Thanks for the listen Scott and the kind words.

Who's doing the pedal steel?
Country is one of those realms that sounds simple and seems to me really difficult to get right, so I'm impressed when someone can do it... And over the years I've been surprised that there isn't more country on MacJams... This has got one solid pocket, Ed... And seamless transitions among the instruments....

Ed
sloparts said 2577 days ago (April 10th, 2010)
Thanks Ed
Truth time: The Steel Guitar on this is almost completely loops, and what's not are loops that I've sliced and diced into new pieces of music.

You're right about Country sounding simple, and in it's basic form, it is. But this stuff is more complicated and yes, more difficult to get right. I don't always manage to get it right, but with the help of my friends and cohorts here I am getting better at it.

Thanks for listening Ed and for the very kind words, it is appreciated.

You old saddle tramp!
HOW you got those ad-libbed lines at the end to sound like they were recorded in the original session, I'll never know. I mean, what's it been, a year and a half since you put the first version out to dry in the corn crib? Nicely (re)done, you old saddle tramp! (That's a '70s-vintage allusion to Charlie Daniels, a man who helped me crash more than one car.)

sloparts said 2565 days ago (April 22nd, 2010)
Actually
the ad lib parts were on the first recording, and were recorded along with the rest of the vox. I did back of the mic some to give the effect that I was yelling down to jailhouse to the jailer.

I was thinking about Charlie Daniels song "Hippy in a redneck bar" here recently and thought what a hoot it would be to do a cover of it. maybe a project for a later time, feel up to helping out on it ? Course I'm really gonna have to find a hell of a fiddle player to pull that one off.
