Alman/Ballad/Jig (Ibstrat cover)

Description
Since I first joined MacJams back in 2006, I went through several phases of music; each new post of mine was different than the previous. When I first started, I was so much into the acoustic work of Ritchie Blackmore (classical/folk touch) but what changed my style was actually getting into 'listening' and exploring other guitarists and music.

Ibstrat, along with Tommy Emmanuel, had the most profound effect shaping me musically. When I first heard Ibstrat's work, I was astounded but wasn't sure of what I was listening to; I know that it's one guy and I know that it's one guitar, but the fact that he wrote/arranged and performed the notes I'm hearing was a bit difficult to comprehend. This 'interesting complexness' opened up a whole new world for me that I started to dig into and learn from/about.

Back in 2008, he posted a beautiful tune that brought back Blackmore's days but with a new twist. In his description, he mentioned "of course it should be played on acoustic but my left hand is not cooperating." As I heard it, I realized how difficult and advanced it is but I promised to get one day to a level where I can play it. He generously provided me with the music sheet and, needless to say, after almost a year, I finally got it recorded (the only disappointment is that it is played on a steel-stringed guitar. I'm still at my promise, though, that once I get a nylon-stringed classical guitar, it'll be rerecorded).

This rendition is not even close to what he achieved in his original as far as, both, feelings and flawlessness. But I want to say that it has been a wonderful journey getting this piece down and I learned SO much while working on it; it gave me tons of ideas about chord substitutions, bass-lines, and so many other little tricks here and there. I only hope that I didn't ruin the original... so I ask you to please click here to hear his original yourself.

Each and every post, and I mean each and every post, of Ibstrat's work is a study in itself. When I ask for, or actually hear, the influences behind a certain piece, I get Chet Atkins, Lenny Breau, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montegomery, Bach, and many others. So I go back to their music and the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate Ibstrat's work, and vice versa. Mark Stunkel is truly one of the bests!

So Mr. Stunkel, I'm forever grateful for everything you've done for me; thank you so much for the inspiration and friendship. I can hardly wait to hear your first acoustic post when your hand heals... I'm eagerly looking forward to that.

And last but not least, a special thanks to Mr. Ed Hannifin for introducing Ibstrat to us in this beautiful community, MJ.

I guess it's time for me to get my hands around another tune from Ibstrat's incredible repertoire! Thank you for reading and listening.

Take care,
- Yeman

i really like
the way you play the guitar. the recording is warm but not dull, and makes for such a soothing listening experience. you can tell right away when somebody has a gift for an instrument. glad this is a 4 minute+ track, anything less would be too short:)

Hi Yeman......
This is a simply beautiful piece of music and your playing and attention to detail is perfect.

I have listened to the original and will now go over and listen to more of lbstats tracks.

I will also be listening to more of your own pieces and, I know, I'm going to enjoy each one of them.

Take care.

Grace
Your playing is beautiful. Your inclination to pay homage to those you have been inspired by and to so carefully thank them is equally beautiful. I have enjoyed the growth you've shown as a musician these past years, but also your blossoming human expressiveness and grace. Thanks for sharing your motivations as well as your music.

Beautiful!
I'm sure Mark (and Tommy) would/will be astounded when they listen to this.

Like Tobin, I've been fascinated watching your progression both musically and personally over the years you've been at MJ. One thing I've really noticed apart from your playing is the unbelievable improvemnet in the fluency and depth of your use of the English language - your ability to put generous and heartfelt ideas into written text puts a lot of "English speaking" MJers to shame and is a real credit to you, your family and your teachers.

Catherin & Coryell; lbstrat & the Birdman?
Yeman, I really appreciate what you -- AND Mark -- do. Like the former you, I am also taken aback by the dynamics and complexity of this music you now can play so well. You two might find some interesting common ground one day, as did Phillip Catherine and Larry Coryell, particularly on their amazing (if old) album, Twin House. So good... both you and them!

If I had two lower jaws...
They'd both drop... I remember hearing the original long ago and loving it, Mark is a great composer and player. But Yeman, you played this beautifully too... it is a piece worthy of a great guitarist and so it is wonderful that you would learn to play it so well. Mark, thank you for writing this, and Yeman, thank you for bringing it back again, and writing so eloquently, above. You both have beautiful souls.

Bravo!
...wonderful playing of a great piece, Yeman! Mark is, indeed, one special player/artist. And I think the piece translates very, very nicely to steel string. I know many classical players who love the steel string guitars (me included).

So sweet...

Wow, Yeman....
This is beautiful in every way... The pace and fluidity of the playing, the tone... The recorded sound... Really, really, good...

And I'm with Tobin and Neil in noting that with you, growth as a musician has been accompanied by growth in spirit...

that as flattering as it might be to have someone cover one of your works, it is even more satisfying to hear it done with so much care and love. You continue to display such a rare passion for your musical development, Yeman.

A flawless performance, needless to say, but what gives me the chills is the sincerity you put into your playing. Sounds are heard, but music is felt. I think I'd like to feel this one again. Thanks for the D/L. Terry

stunning work
yeman, this is truly a gem. i love the "realness" of the recording, with all it's little imperfections. it made me feel like i was sitting in a room with you while you play. Your skill is stunning, but it's the warmth of your delivery and the heart you put into your music that makes this breathtaking. i loved the extensive song notes you wrote with this, too. thank you for sharing.

Hi Yeman
It's very impressive to hear the music you perform these days. The scales and the chords you're able to find and play is proof of someone that is very dedicated to music, both theory and practice. What is important in the end (to me) is that you're able to balance the technical part and the musical one, and you let the last one stay in front — which I believe is the vital part of this (every) art.

What I'm trying to say is that I can hear beautiful music coming from your performance - Being a guitarist myself I of course wonder how you do this magic that you do so well:)

You're a great inspiration Yeaman:)
