Description
If the love of your life can't be with you, you'll understand the message behind this tune. Again, I try my hand at singing. Special thanks to Cap'n Ed "SloParts" Wemmerus for lending a big-brotherly ear and a shoulder.

P.S.: Listen to this reprise "Call Me" for different tack I considered in writing this tune.

Lyrics
When you're blue, clouds seem to follow you;
skies are gray, nothing you can say or do;
fog so thick It's hard to see the point?
Turn to me...

When the wheels you try to reinvent
turn on you: Share that sentiment.
When you need tea and sympathy,
Turn to me...

Everybody needs a champion; everybody needs a prayer.
So anytime you feel alone, don't despair, you know I'll be there.

Keep an even keel as you navigate;
read the tides, make your own fate.
Keep your heading straight and your bearing true,
Oh ~ and turn to me when you're feeling blue, turn to me...

Hardware:
Guitar: Hofner Jazzica archtop. One lead and one rhythm track recorded into both condenser mic and a PreSonus Firewire interface. Vocals: condenser mic. Bass: Peavey Peavey Milestone II (with washcloth stuffed under the strings to deaden sustain), recorded via interface. Other: I dug-up an egg-shaker and wood block for this... they're in the mix if you listen hard enough.
Software:
GarageBand 4 ('08). Drums: My first use of keypad typing, which I found more flexible and handmade than using loops.

Sentimental, my genes*
Ahh, sentiment. Luckily I wrote the directive for my loved one to "share that sentiment," to replace the line, "I share your impediment." (BTW the "*" is a nod to the late, great Warren Zevon.)

Big Bro
Ed, thanks in part to your patience in e-mail and phone feedback, I got the mix pretty much where I wanted it. My last thoughts were that the cymbal -- turn up yer treble for it! -- might be a little thin, or the wood block lacking high-end. But it felt about right. My REAL formula: when I get sick of it, it's probably done. That happen to you?

I really like the slight raspiness in your vox in spots. Of course the guitars are spot on and really cool.

Nice sentiment and feeling throughout; I totally understand where you're comming from.

Okay, this is grooving. Kinda recognize the form, the nautical influence is warm and organic. More sustain might have been fun, I dig most stuff with that half-step resolution.
Great job, great to see ya trying new stuff.

this and the lyrics have only just begun... love this beat, but you've put a brilliant spin on it with a slightly faltering vocal rhythm with it and it works brilliantly, love the vocals and the lovely guitar work.... just love this, regards M

Big thanks.
Thanks for stuffing your dollar in the tip jar, Maurice. About the "slightly faltering" aspect: I ran a couple of alternate vocal takes past my daughter -- she's five, but I wrote it for her, envisioning her as a 20-something looking back at her parent's (pending in 2010) divorce -- and she picked the vocal take with the most rasp/whisper in the intro. She was adamant, so I relented and use that (this) take.

See the comment I made to Mark (lbstrat) above; it applies to your feedback as well. It's pretty great to hear this from you. For years I avoided singing, mostly sticking to rock guitar instrumentals. But I'm having fun in my play-experiment with singing.

I may need a "Clapton realignment."
It's funny, you're at least the third person that's said that about the song. I idolized Clapton in Cream, loved him in Blind Faith and the Dominoes, liked 461 Ocean Blvd., but wrote him off when Slowhand came out and considered him a has-been ever since. I guess he's a has-been in the same way B.B. King is, meaning: not! I'll have to reconsider him in light of the singer-songwriter mold rather than the teenage guitar-god mold.

soft and gentle...
cool 'n breezy music and singing here, and although the guitar panned to the right a bit sounded slightly muffled and the bass volume could be boosted slightly, overall the mix seems good, the singing is nice and strong. I LOVE the "nyah nyah" guitar raspberry at 2:42, and the halting at 2:57, really spice this up... love the wordplay of "fog so thick, hard to see the point". Song of sweetness.

Drakonis

What a GREAT listen you gave this. Thx!
Glad to hear your careful listen-critique. Points: 1) I sweat extensively over the bass tone and level, trying to approximate an acoustic bass sound--stuffing a washcloth under the strings, and dipping the low EQ at around 120 Hz to make room for the kick (subtle, I know) and taking-out the electric boom. 2) as for the fight-channel lead being muffled, I recorded and mixed it with low treble, which I intended to make-up with sing the mic-ed rack (I think panned right), but I later turned that down a bit. I'll think about that. In its Web-compressed form (vs. the AIFF), some things definitely got pushed around in the mix, which is maddening, too. 3) The "nyah-nyah" just tickled me, I had to do it; glad you liked it!; 4) I'm extra-glad you caught the nautical wordplay of trying to see the point in the fog.

I'll likely take your advice when I touch-up my tunes for my faux-album release, "Takin' out the Guitarbage," which is shaping-up to be a collection of songs that have no business coexisting under the same cover. Next up for me: "1-2-3-5 Overdrive!," a trashy garage-rocker I'll do on my newly rehabbed '64 Teisco (http://www.macjams.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=5;showtopic=198113).

My dear new friend.....
from the information written on your profile page and the description of this track, it seems that you are in the midst of a very difficult time in your life. If that difficulty inspires quality music (vocals and instrumentation) like this, you will come through with flying colors! That is my prediction. This one is on my Ipod for more listens at my leisure. THANK YOU for this wonderful performance.

Wow, Bob! What a terrific song you have here. Your voice and guitar really compliment each other. The lyrics are uplifting. I think your voice transfers emotion well and curiously I sense a deep saddness underlying within it.

turn to me
ok i know i've heard this before but i'm gonna listen again. wow bob....your vocal sounds so natural and intimate. you should sing more often. i wish i could play tunes like this on my guitar. you probably rush something like this off in ten minutes...you are such a talent. i want to sing on this one too. great solos, lovely chord progressions. and you're such an educated guy...which is why your lyrics are so smart. totally love this. love the last 'turn' section where you halt repeatedly. incredibly clever writing and a gem of a final chord. now i'm going to go back and see what i wrote last time and see if i say the same things.

Variations and much labour
THANKS!!! To your comment that I "probably rush something like this off in ten minutes," no way! My original sketch for this was inspired by John Lennon's slow, brooding "Aisumasen (I'm Sorry)." I also have a short, garage-fuzzy "reprise" version I considered, in a folk-rock vein.

Lend me your ears? After months, I did a little remixing and posted it to iComps... the panning is more center (esp. the lead guitar on the left. I also made the drums/percussion louder and the song a bight hi-end brighter. (HERE: http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=146373) ... Curious if you hear the other version to tell me which is better, that brighter version or this more hushed one.

turn to me
bob....this is a hit....from the title (and how it is the chorus hook), the breezy feel of it, the relaxed vocal delivery, the chord progression and the phrasing. the two stops on 'turn' late on are total USPs....and if you went and recorded this in a pro-studio it would be one of those songs that people would listen to for generations to come. if someone asked me to name my top five macjam songs, this would be at number one. seriously bob....this is a beautiful creation.
