She's All Mine with Jerry Quinn

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I had been toying with these chord changes for more than 10 years. A few weeks ago I finally recorded the instrumental tracks and then brought them to my friend, Jerry_Quinn, who wrote the lyrics and contributed the vocal, melody, and sax solo. I had always wanted the subject of the song to be about a strong woman who we desire and fear at the same time. Her strength is sexy until she turns it on you. I told Jerry what I was looking for and I think he nailed it.

Great
song, production, lyrics, melody , singing and love the guitar sound and style you might consider background vocals, I think they would really complete this song, this sounds pro to me!

Thank You!
I did consider adding some background vocals and quickly decided against. Truth be told I had no good ideas regarding a vocal arrangement. Besides, I really was going for a Robben Ford kind of thing. So it just seemed appropriate to let Jerry's vocal stand on its own. But that's the beauty of this whole do-it-yourself music production thing. There's infinite possibilities. Thanks for your kind words and taking the time to listen.

Loved it!
This was ($&@#&! excellent! You guys are incredible--the excellent lyrics provide a quite a portrait. The singing, the playing--you know, I wish I could find even ONE single flaw or something I did not like, but forget it! One of those tracks I hear on this site and instinctively find myself rummaging through my pocket looking for a quarter to put in the slot on the monitor to play it again. Thanks for exceptional work here!

very immediate
This reminds me of some of the music I used to play back in the mid seventies, stuff by bands like Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs etc. It's a well constructed and well balanced song and has an uncluttered clean sounding production. Also great separation and clarity with the vocals sitting pefectly.

Thanks
Thanks for your kind feedback and taking the time to comment and listen. As for your suggestion about EQ, that's a part of mixing and mastering that still beyond me and can be a source of frustration. On one pair of speakers there's too much low end. Then on another there's too little. The fact is I have yet to buy a proper set of monitors. I'm relying on various Bose products for monitoring and mixing (earbuds, headphones, computer multimedia speakers, and my sound dock). I'll also listen to mixes on some pretty unforgiving cheap computer speakers. It's not an ideal approach but it'll do for now. Thanks again!

Nice groove, cool jazzy changes. I like the doubled guitar line. Great sax solo. The lyrics/melody are a great fit to the backing track. The lyric is well written and develops the theme well. Good choice of instruments/guitar tones, everything is sitting nicely in the mix. Great job.

All Jerry
The lyrics are all Jerry. Originally I was focused mostly on her hard side. But Jerry brought out her softer side in a way that struck a nice balance. I worried I may have gone over the top with the guitars. So it's nice to have so many respond positively to the guitar tracks. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Nice chord progression, but I do feel that the vocals could have been mixed in a little better. They are a tad too loud. The hihat feels a little stringy.

niiiice...
Ooh, I *do* like the chords here, simple and sultry, the guitar sounds all silky, and the bass really propels it... Fun smirky lyrics. Very nice sax work, really jazzes up the ending... not a fan of fade-outs, but hey, the artwork makes up for it :-) Jerry's got a good singing voice, and seems right for this song. Quite listenable and fun!

I came back
for another listen to this, or maybe just to look at the picture too, I understand your decision not to add background vocals, these are so good, but like you mentioned, endless possibilities, you might ask my good friend crissew (Charles) to give it a shot he excels at harmonies and could do it in minutes and wouldn't mind if they didn't work, just a thought...I really really like this song I listened much closer this time and love the sax! Way up in my top favorites

Thanks Again
I know the girl keeps me coming back. I am familiar with Charles and his talent with vocal harmonies. But I think if we were inclined to work this one further I would have to give Jerry first shot at it. I'm working on some other things of my own that will require reaching out for singers better than myself. Charles will be on my short list if he's willing.

Did you read jdholiday's comments first? You need to check it out. We were going for a Robben Ford type of blues rock thing with the single vocal. I dug what Jerry gave me and didn't want to mess with it. But perhaps you and I can collaborate on something in the future. You'll be fully in charge of the vocal arrangement. The pic looks like Angelina. The tune is sultry, laid back, smooth. You do some interesting things in your guitar solo. In fact all your guitar work is very good. I like the sax in the end, though I think it could sit a little better in the mix. But a small criticism and only my humble opinion. Excellent work - I really enjoyed the listen - thanks!

Small Criticism
Remarks about mixing are always most welcome. As I've told others, mixing and mastering are still the most baffling part of the process for me. What sounds good on one set of speakers sounds less appealing on others. As long as things improve from one project to the next, I guess that's all I can ask for. Thanks for your kind words and support.

Great production and playing - clear as a whistle. As far as the harmonies debate goes, I'd love to hear Anne and Marty from SISTERS have a crack at filling in some of the spaces - very appropriate in this tune. Love the guitar harmonies - no nits!

Very Appropriate
I agree about the quality the sisters would bring to anything. I'm a fan of theirs and some of their songs. On this song however, I was looking to make it almost a male confessional and keep it completely from a male perspective. See, while he says all this in the song, she must be out of earshot, else she may become offended and turn on him. In my mind the sister's voices put her in the room. But that too is an interesting prospect. At any rate, the positive response this song has received I hope could lead both Jerry and I to collaborating with other macjamers on future projects. Keep me mind! And thanks for stopping by to listen and comment.

Your catwoman tune is clear as... night!
Clean and a club hit. Great guitar performances and solid bass. About the chord changes, you've got the rhythm guitar lower than you need to... but yup, it's really good all over. Excellent sax solo, it adds a great, unexpected dimension, a neat bit of gift-wrapping. I'm not sure if you want to hear any armchair quarterbacking -- nothing demands any kind of "fix" here -- just my personal preference would be push the vox down a bit (5 db?) because the band's great, and the vox is strong with great enunciation. This would keep the vox strong while sating the music freak -- louder music without forcing your hand to resort to vox or master-track compression.

The Catwoman Song (Love the new name)
Mixing is the hardest part and I think I'll suffer a while from improper mixing equipment to go with beginner technique. I need proper monitors. I am using master track compression and EQ. You should hear this track without those.......SUCK. Getting things EQed and balanced so they sound good through virtually any set of speakers is still a problem for me. But with constructive feedback like yours, one day I may yet overcome it. Thanks for the thoughtful comments.

Bob6stringer said 2723 days ago (April 13th, 2010)
What's a monitor?!
Hey, Andrew, you know that I was kind of holding my breath being critical. Monitors are SO critical. I'll never buy another pair of speakers that are NOT monitors because even for listening -- especially for listening when I'm trying to mix or faux-master my own stuff -- I want to hear the song as it was intended. Sadly, I don't have a pair of (working) monitors. I have primarily used (get this) standard Apple earbuds! I press them into my ears just a little bit to bring-up the bass... then compare my tune to another with a similar mix and try to get the levels right! Then there's the car, teh boom box, etc., etc., to use as references. Finally: I know she's yours, but is she for rent?

This sounds...
... great! I dig the clean guitar lines. Fitting vocals and awesome sax... it can't get better, as good as any good mainstream hit I've heard.

Men want her and fear her. Women want to be her! In fact I've met a few woman at MJ that could be her. Jerry will be thrilled you liked his lyrics.

Nice piccie !
Even nicer tune, like the tone of the guitar .I try to get this but end up with distortion and poo...perhaps I should try using some of the strange and esoteric knobs on the black box I plug it into ?

That sax has just come wailing in like a solid pillar of saxophonic sound and the guitar sort of corruscates around it like a musical ivory....excellent ending to a truly great song .Kudos matey !

Thank You
We were very proud of this piece. And even prouder of the song. I use Line6 software for the guitar tones. It's cheap, easy to use and (IMO) sounds great. Thanks again.
