Lyrics
there’s a place down town on the corner of main they call it heartbreak café
I’ve been spending my life dodging out of the rain regretful of all things passé
and I’m waiting for muffins and coffee and whisky to take me to some other place
and the mist that surrounds is all that astounds me, that and the smile on your face

I’m not looking for answers to why I walked in and sat at my favourite booth
all I want is the freedom to be in this medium that is the god’s honest truth
and you sail on by with your tray of ice – cream soda and eggs Florentine
and the look you throw me, it says that you know me and all of the places I’ve been

you are the breezy warmth of love on a slice of toast
you are the trees that hold up the sky, from coast to coast

and I’m wondering who’s taking you home tonight the thought of it just makes me ill
and I think of the chances and missed romances that is the bitterest pill
so I swallow instead all my pride and the whisky it comforts but fuzzes my mind
and I’ll stagger right back to the life I can’t hack the loneliest place I can find

you are the breezy lemon zest on crème caramel
you are the deepest font of love into which I fell

breezy breezy let’s get squeezy… love in a crème caramel
you’re the ham and cheese, anything you please
love into which I fell

Yeah Man!
First of all this is one truly great song. I love the percussive effect on the main guitar track. The high melody guitar tracks sound almost mandolinish. The harmony changes at 1:38 are fabulous. I haven't even gotten to your relaxed yet precise vocal. Your vocals, both lead and background are flawless. Total download!

Great, great, great!
I could not listen until I had written and performed my latest song, but now, and yes, wow! First, I am totally amazed by your song-writng and performance alike and I admit I feel a little jealous of your ease to find so good melodies, but, it is a good jealousy, one to learn from.
Like I said, the performance is awesome, as is the recording. The ending is superb.
Call me silly, but I hear some UB40 in here. This could so easily be turned into a very cool reggae song; I think it's your vocals.
The lyrics are giving me a story of lost love, oh so well experienced and lived. The line: "and I’m wondering who’s taking you home tonight the thought of it just makes me ill" is so strong, and all by itself needs recognition. Other lines like "a slice of toast - from coast to coast" doesn't really say anything to me other than simple rhyme. I hope it is okay to be honest, and of course, I'd like you to be with my songs as well. :) Overall, the song is great, the arrangement, the performance but the lyrics needs a bit of work if you ask me. And, I would consider the turning this into a reggae, although I have no idea if this is your kind of music at all? I am also all open to collab... :)

Fabulous
I love this. Simple production, succint acoustic work and fabulous (oh yes!) lyrics. Great line about the trees coast to coast. How do you think of such stuff? Bedazzles me for sure (and I hope you make a living from this!) Best wishes, Girk

Great vocals and guitar playing.
Not generic great but "GREAT".
Outstanding vocals and harmonies.
Reminiscent of James Taylor . . .

Okay
I'm back! I played this for my girlfriend and she says ;"I want that on my ipod!'......... I would refine the bitterest pill line and get this song to Jason Mraz or Michael Buble or you know who would love this song...Van Morrison, not suggesting you don't sing it extremely well, you do! great singing! Great song! Some of the best writing I've seen here!

This is
just top-notch song writing Julian, could be played and successful in any musical form, reggae (as Mikki said), jazz, pop etc.
Your playing and vocal are just spot on and draw the listener completely in without any tricks/effects.
I was wondering why 'Maine' and not Hackney, but I don't suppose you wouldn't get Eggs Florentine there (whatever they are?).
Just wonderful mate. Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

smooth
Great construction, layout and vox as usual.
I know you wanted to keep it simple but I kept wanting to hear a double bass come in a bit later in the song.
If I'm honest I wasn't too sure about some of the lyrics and nearly starting singing 'easy peazy lemon squeezy' at the end but I hope you appreciate my honesty.
Apart from that a lovely track
cheers

jazzy folk? folky jazz?
Beautifully done Julian! Great delivery of the vocal, and terrific restraint in the performance and orchestration. Backing vox are just right--I would have been tempted to muddle it up with too much other instrumentation and tracks--you did it just right.

Song unto which I dig
Hey, you're right -- we both got jazz-ish! This is great. You've got good tone (besides being on-pitch) on your voice, and that's where the focus is. But the guitar's just right, too. You sung and mixed those harmonies great, too.

I completely fall into the syntax of the "into which I fell" construction. Worth building a song around, if that was your inspirational hook (or not). You've got something so catchy here that you could mine an album's worth from the arrangement.

Damnit Julian!
How am I supposed to poke fun at your Brittishness if you keep putting out music that's this good? Really... It's terrific. The song is well written, played and produced.

Hey, if your ever want to crank up the distortion and do some screaming I'll lend you one of my guitars.

One question, how come you guys don't sound like a limey when you're singing but when your holding a regular conversation us Americans can barely understand what your saying?

hey michael
if you can't even spell 'britishness' then how do you expect to poke fun at it? we sing in amerglish out of sympathy for your lack of education. but when we speak, we tend to use words constructed from multiple syllables. i think that's where the problem lies. i remember posting a song, 'Curtain' which contains a five-syllable word 'procrastination'. it took hours to upload....and macjams crashed momentarily from the surge of intense intellect.

Ah yes
"Britishness." I stand corrected.

Amerglish... That's classic! You crack me up Julian. Seriously, this is one really wonderful song. I'm glad you kept the intense intellect to a minimum.

Very easy going piece here
Very well done vocal, I think your voice has really improved and it was good to start with. Class song writing, and a simple but tasteful guitar part. The only thing I would change is the effect on the vocal, I think a more organic sound would be much warmer. I think there is a either a flange or phaser on there. Great tune though man. You have a good amount of good songs but this is in the upper echelon of your material for sure. Great job.

Okay not stalking you
can you comment 3 times on one song? Well I am, I love singer/songwriter/player's (triple threats), pure talent and you have it julian, so 1 comment for your singing which I love, another comment for your playing which is beautiful and thirdly exceptional writing wait....... and my fourth comment would be to praise your phrasing especially on this song and fifthly your harmonies, okay I'm running out of adjectives but my objective is to say thank you for a song that I listen to on a regular basis, extremely rare for me. Hope you have a great day my friend, james.

What talent...
...you demonstrate here. Great voice you have, but it deserves a better mic. I also loved reading the discourse on Amerglish (& intense intellect) with fasteddie in this comment thread! But sadly it's true that we Brits tend towards that more relaxed accent whilst singing, even though I've often tried to pass off any short vowals as just going "northern"! :-D
