Description
To my friends. Don't know what I'd do without 'em...

The artwork is my two Nunwell glass slides. Very heavy...great looks, feel, and sound. I love them.

They're sitting atop my Boogie Mark II-B combo amp (with the black dust cover over it). Stout as they are, they would shatter if I set the amp at 5 or more...

Great stuff!
I have never tried a slide... the fact that I struggle with guitar at all probably means I'd suck at the slide... LOL.

This is great. Love the tone you get from your axe!

Actually...
...the slide's different from fingering on the guitar. You might be surprised. One thing to remember (if you're wearing it on your pinky) is to put one or two trail fingers lightly on the strings behind the slide, while you play. Makes for a thicker sound.
It's a very fine, guitar. Thanks, Mark.

Delta Master
It's rare you hear a slide piece played on a resonator guitar with such a strong melody. And that you can make it stand all on its own for the whole piece is even more impressive. Elements of blues and jazz presented through an instrument with a unique and wonderful voice.

The music is sweet and the slides are pretty... though your wife may use those adjectives about you. This is great fun, I absolutely love the composition, and the slide-work is delicious... gives this slightly dizzy feeling, with a big helping of smiles. Totally faved.

Tobin!
Bring on the gumbo, man!
"Old style feel": when I first started writing this, it reminded me of my Grandparent's place in Vermont. Swimming, picnics, running around in sub-arctic cold fields, whippings behind the shed...uh, wait a minute...

Seriously though: my grandpa was a vaudeville guy when he was younger and this reminded me of the music they'd play and all the fun we'd have up there.

As the tune progressed, it became more and more "current". Glad you like it. Those harmonics do ring, don't they...

Resonator guitars...
...were built to be LOUD so they could carry over the other instruments. Before amplifiers. The metal/aluminum cone is a built in amp. You should hear this thang, live. It carries. Add the metal fingerpicks and it's the Daytona 500 in my living room. Drives my wife crazy after an hour or two...
Thanks for the listen...

There IS, however, the on-line "Bob Prince Slide Guitar Method"...only $999.99 per lesson. Guaranteed you'll play music just like this after the third lesson, or your money is already spent on my next reso!

Slides:
I got the blue/red one when I first bought the guitar, 13 years ago. Dropped it 2 flights down my stairwell onto a hardwood floor a couple of months ago. It didn't break...but I figured I should get a backup.
New one's thicker and heavier. I call it "Cactus Rattler" 'cuz of...well...you know. Started a new piece the minute I tried it out, which shall be called: "Cactus Rattler".

Not only well played....
...this REALLY captures the presence of the National... Maybe one of your best efforts in terms of pure recording impact...

I really like the composition, and I think you played it flawlessly... I like the Kottke-esque big slides that pop up throughout... The tune has melody, too, that one could imagine singing something to... Some slide tunes in this world have attack, but lack melody... Is this just recorded ambience on this, or did you put a bit of reverb in there... sounds good, whatever you did...

Good one...
guitapick said 2562 days ago (April 19th, 2010)
Thanks, Ed...
...I used some, but not much, reverb. The guitar speaks well on it's own when recorded...but I find that some added reverb really gives it the added depth that you hear in a live venue.

Slide on over
and let Bob take over! Is this a song format? i.e. verse verse chorus bridge chorus outro? If it is, even if it isn't... i would offer this up for a colab, going for a live jam feel, bass, piano, drums, maybe horns, i would insist on the real thing though. Not that this doesn't stand on it's own!

twangtastic. are they hard to use? can a brit use one?
Check out my latest song called If Symptoms Persist
guitapick said 2560 days ago (April 21st, 2010)
Can ya use one...?
Well...can't say as I rightly know, pardner...

...can ya rope a steer or ride a bull in the rodeo...?

The trick to a slide, Mr. Brit, if you're not wearing it on your index finger, is to keep at least one of the trail fingers sitting lightly on the strings behind the slide. Gives it a fuller sound and eliminates some of the overtones. Also have to blunt the strings not being used, using your picking hand, to eliminate unwanted overtones. That comes easier if you're fingerpicking...though you can do it with a flatpick, too.

Putting the slide on the index finger's good for the electric...esp if you're using overdrive/distortion. You can do the pull offs and hammer ons and the overtones aren't as apparent. I like metal and ceramic slides, as well as the glass, for the electric.

As far as the vibrato: start slow, using one or two strings. Your hand will get used to it, after awhile, at which point you'll find it easier to vary the speed. And remember that the note you're hitting is above the actual metal fret...not between two of them, like when you're fingering the neck.

As always: it's all about practicing, cowboy (or should I say: cowbloke?).

guitapick said 2538 days ago (May 13th, 2010)
If you're playing acoustic...
...I'd recommend a ceramic or glass slide. Otherwise I'd say either metal or ceramic on electric...though glass would work, too.

Generally, the higher the action is, the heavier the slide the guitar can handle. And the heavier the slide, the more the sustain/thicker the sound. I use the ones in the picture on my Radiotone, 'cuz the action's pretty high. The closed end is, as far as I know, for added weight/balance (but I'm really not sure...didn't really think much about it). I use a ceramic one (open end/lighter) on my Martin.

Remember to let your trail finger(s) rest on the strings, behind the slide, as you play, for a fuller sound. And the note's ON the fret...not between them.

Thanks for the nice comment.
