Description
TWO years at MacJams!

I know I already uploaded a song this week, but when I did that, I forgot that today was my MacJammiversary - and I sorta like uploading something on each anniversary to see what I've learned in the past year. So, here it is.

This is the second piece in my Nature Suite. The first was Beach Walk. I've used the same set of instruments, as well as some similar song stucture characteristics.

For this piece, I really played with time signature. It's written in 7/8 which gives it a slightly off-balance feel. I also played around with how the melody moves - where the phrasing happens and where accents are - to give the song even more of a shifting feel. I really wanted this to be like moonlight through the trees, a slight breeze moves a branch and everything shifts, a cloud floats across and everything shifts again. It's never quite a steady light, but gorgeous and serene none-the-less.

Learning more and more about Logic and Miroslav and have tried to really use all that I've discovered. As always, I'd appreciate any thoughts or constructive criticism you have to offer.

Thanks for two amazing years my friends.

Totally Two!
This is really wonderful... you have indeed created a rather slippery piece, with the 7/8 time and the piano arpeggios rippling under the melodies... it all comes in and out of time gently, and in achingly beautiful ways. Great instrument choices, I love the low clarinet and cello registers, they sounded great here. A couple of places I might have offset when a couple instruments came in so it wasn't so abrupt, but other than that, this was languid and the instruments sounded soooo realistic it was awesome to listen to. As you know, I personally like some final resolution chord instead of an unresolved fade, but I don't know here... this actually seemed to be OK, sort of melting away... adding to the heartache of that final touch and the retreat back into the shadows after the end of the serenade. Excellent composition and performance on the piano, and orchestration. Pardon me while I savor this and stand in awe :-)
ttfn,
Drakonis

That throbbing cello is just heartbreaking. The whole piece is simply beautiful. It evokes a mood consistent with the title. I didn't view the 7/8 as off balance as much as it allows the themes and phrases to breathe. You're remarkable.

At first the amount of space the 7/8 gave me to work with the melody was almost frightening - I had no idea what to do with all those beats, but once i settled in, it DID feel like there was some room to breathe. Thanks so much for your kind words here. Let me offer a very much belated welcome to MacJams!

Beautiful...
...in its wonderful simplicity. The pieces I enjoy most are those where each voice is absolutely clear and has a reason for being there. In Moonlight Serenade you've achieved that clarity in the cello, woodwinds, and in the arpeggiated piano lines to a degree that makes the whole composition accessible and poignantly responsive to the scene you are painting. Exquisite cello, especially. That last suspended note before the final chord is really captivating, Shay. It is just wonderful to hear the marvelous progression your compositions are displaying. May year three be increasingly productive as you explore the world of melody and orchestration even further.

Your comments are always so insightful and uplifting, as well as helpful. I've really taken some of your words to heart, and in this song especially, wanted to experiment with tempo and time sig in order to give the performance a more "live" feel. Putting in pregnant pauses like that end cello note is one way I've found to help the song feel more organic. Thank you for everything you've given over the past two years - not least of all sharing your incredible music.

Moonlight
Very nice. You have created an intimate setting here - it is like being in the first row - right in front of the players. In headphones especially you really feel the space between the instruments. As one exits and another enters I find myself shifting my focus of attention, so to speak, to the new instrument. And everything is played with the lightest touch, like musical whispers. The 7/8 time gives the piece an interesting and unique feel - at times it feels like a groove is happening, then all of the sudden you are lost in the progression.
Very nice work Shay. You have come a long way since I first met you, and you were awesome then - congrats

sometimes getting technical is overrated. Polished, really? I played around quite a bit with EQ and compression to try to get a mastered feel to the piece, so I'm very glad to hear you say that. And, as always, very glad you came by for a listen and enjoyed the music. Thanks!

Hi Shay......
Happy MJ 2nd birthday.

This piece is hauntingly beautiful. It reminds me, from one point of view, of Philip Glass. I don't mean that it any negative way.

I am taken away by the varying theme and motif in a way quite dreamlike.

Beautiful, emotive playing and phrasing throughout.

Wonderful.

Take care.

Sorry I'm late Shay...
Still settling in after my two week vacation in Phoenix.

What a gorgeous piece. Lovely piano melody. That cello in the opening had my eyes tearing over...

Funny, a very early rock piece I did called "Moonlight" conveyed a nearly identical mood as this piece. What IS it about moonlight, I wonder?

Anyway, this is simply wonderful, from start to finish. Major Kudos...

Happy Anniversary!
So soothing. The piano sounds lovely, has a warm, full and natural sound. Your playing seems to mimic soulful moments and passing thoughts while gazing at the moon - there is a constant, gentle flow.

I wish there would be a cello sample which allows to control the attack and release while playing - it be so useful to make it sound more organic - since using one setting works for either fast or slower notes it seems.
Everything else blends very well too, as always and I didn't pay any attention to the 7/8 rhythm which shows how well you use this rhythm. Especially interesting in a 'classical' setting!

So - happy anniversary! You are one of the most insightful and eloquent commenters around, not to mention your musical talent of course.

Wow, kassia...
This is elegantly simple, organically simple...

I love the piano against...is it cello and then something woodwindish? More than one woodwindish thing? In any case, it's just enough, and never the sense of anything crowded, and everything sounds lovely and sonorous together...

This is a clear example of the difference that can be made in a lovely composition by a high quality of sampled instruments...

Just beautiful, all around....
