A Light Went Out w/ Jerry Quinn, Paul Page & Ryan

Description
I wrote this simple little song a few years ago shortly after my Mom passed away suddenly. After it was written I did a quick live recording of me singing to my own guitar accompaniment with my Zoom H4. I then saved it to my computer and didn’t think much more about it.

Fast forward to 2010 when Jerry Quinn and I started recording several of his original songs. That process prompted me to go back through some of my own ideas. I brought this one to Jerry who graciously agreed to sing it. We selected a key. I recorded a scratch guitar track over which Jerry sang several vocal tracks. I could then pick and choose from those tracks during editing and mixing.

After listening to what we had I realized the song needed orchestration. I reached out to the macjams community. It was Karen (magnatone) who suggested I contact Paul F. Page. (http://www.macjams.com/artist/paul+f.+page) I knew from the music Paul has posted here and at his own website (www.paulpage.org) that he would know exactly what my simple song needed. Paul was willing to help and it wasn’t long before I received a wonderful gift in an email, the orchestration Paul had created for this song.

The final piece was to enlist my son, Ryan, to contribute the tasteful bass line that holds it all together.

Many thanks to Jerry, Paul, and Ryan for contributing their valuable time and talent during both the recording and mixing process.

Lyrics
Somehow a light went out,
I’m sitting in the dark,
I don’t know how I’ll find my way,
I know if you were here,
You’d take me by the hand,
And let me know that it’s okay,

But you’ve got things you have to do,
And you’ve got somewhere else to be,
I know that if you could,
You’d find a way to see me through,
But that’s not how it’s meant to be

It seems the light I saw,
Extinguished much to soon,
I just can’t seem to understand,
How can a light so bright,
Be here one day then out of sight,
I know it’s not what you had planned,

You just had things you had to do,
And you had somewhere else to be,
I know that if you could,
You’d find a way to see me through,
But that’s not how it’s meant to be,

I guess it’s not so bad,
I’m not here on my own,
And there are those who look to me,
I’ll take them by the hand,
And try to lead the way,
I know it’s what you’d want to see,

For I have things I have to do,
And I have somewhere else to be,
I know that if you could,
You’d find a way to see us through,
But that's not how it's meant to be,

A simple song
you say, but full of meaning and understanding of what it's like when someone as close as your Mother leaves this place. You used the very words I used at my saddest of times 'A light went out' and it quite literally did. Love the simplicity of this as well as Paul's tasteful contribution .....as well as the lyrics, regards M

Well, I never assumed it was an original metaphor. But I guess that's why people easily identify with the lyric. Thank you for your kind words and taking the time to listen. We all appreciate it.

When life goes as expected,
we all end up there eventually and say goodbye to our parents. While the loss is painful and sad, it is the way it should be. I always feel worse for parents who lose children. Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment. We all appreciate it.

Perfect...
perfectly touching lyrics, singing, playing, and orchestration... This would be a very tricky thing to add to without crowding or distracting from the song... Paul, as I would expect, came up with perfect accompaniment and countermelodies, and just the right instrumentation, the mix slightly mutes the music, which is a good thing as it makes the vocal stand out and sparkle. Really wonderful poignant, thought-provoking song here! Excuse me, I gotta go hug my mom.

Drakonis

Family Hand
beautiful song for a beautiful woman. I love the fact that you have accepted her passing in the lyrics. Not a dry eye in the room. To other listeners... If your mom is still alive by all means, tell her you love her and give her a big hug if you can. She will appreciate it more than can ever be described. Paul did a great job in the orchestrations and wow, how special it is to have your son play on this special song. Jerry captured the feel of this. Beautiful!

Thank You
This was written a week after she passed. I wonder if I could have actually been at the acceptance phase, but you're right it does come through. Maybe I just realized eventually you have to get there. I agree with you regarding Paul's orchestration. When I first placed the sub-mix he sent me into a track and heard it all together I was stunned. This was also the 1st time anyone had sung something I wrote. Jerry delivers this in a way I could never do. And any time with my son is special. But sharing the gift of music together is the best. Again, thank you!

Your voice is gorgeous here, and this is a perfectly constructed an achingly beautiful song. congrats to you both - hope you can do more together in the future! thank you for the gift.

Moving ...
This is a great collaboration. The lyrics are touching it's very well written. I also liked the part starting "I guess it's not so bad ...". It's a positive note and you don't leave the thema up in the air. I would like to compliment everyone having done the collaboration too, I think the vocals and orchestration are great, as well as the composition. I'm moved by this song, it's very nicely done.

almost
too beautiful. this brought tears - thank you. Lovely, touching lyrics and tune. Paul's orchestration is just breathtaking. I really love the combination of the simple, organic folk-type vocal delivery and the delicate, precision of the more classical orchestration. It makes this song completely accessible and absolutely heart-touching. Very very nice.

Paul's Choice
Thank you so much. When Paul sent me his first ideas for the orchestration I was struck by his choice to feature a clarinet. Is there a sound more mournful and heartbreaking then that lone clarinet? When I told him how much I loved it he came back with the clarinet/flute counterpoint you hear in the final mix. Unbelievable! Thank you so much for stopping by to listen and comment.

At the risk...
...of sounding too sappy, myself:
There's a finality to the passing of a loved one that transcends the spoken word. I take great solace in poetry and song...it helps to ease the feeling of loss and establishes that bond of communal understanding and love. I don't think anything is sappy when it comes from the heart, as this song so obviously does, Andrew.

Thanks A
