Description
Sorry, haven't posted in a while. Been too busy with work. Any spare minutes for music I've spent recording a solo CD project. Here's one from that collection, close to finished, if not done. This is the studio version of my very first post from Nov. '09. Personnel: John Whitehead, composition, guitar and lead vocal; Deb Carlson harmony: Kip Jones, violin; Brian Roessller, bass; recorded and mixed by David Hedding at Glacier Studios, Minneapolis, MN

It's been a while!
But worth the wait. John, this was beautiful. You and Deb sing this so gracefully and with a lot of warmth and you and your fellow musicians make a lovely song even better. Applause from Minneapolis to all involved here...excellent, excellent, excellent!

Just a great tune and production. A James Taylor-ish feel.

loved the original version on here. this is fantastic. wow....love the easy loose feel of the harmonies and those atmospheric string. wasn't too sold on the pizzicato stuff at 2.00. the middle bridge is wonderful...haunting. have you thought about really belting out your voice in places. the pizzicato strings at the end worked well. 'i've been pushing this rock up a hill - it's beginning to slide'....is great writing (as is all of your stuff). you give up the day job john...i'll manage you uk side.

Love the simplicity
Classic singer/songwriter stuff here. Very nice chorus. The line "it's beginning to slide" is particularly good. The bowed strings give additional class and grace. The plucked strings are and additional treat. Really nice bridge. Great songwriting!

Very classic folk sound
Very well done in pretty much every aspect. Old school folk vibe to my ear. I didnt hear James Taylor, more like John Denver mixed with Jim Croce to me!

Unrolls easily and naturally...
...nicely paced...

I like the lead and the harmony vocals, and I like the simple guitar playing against the violin.

Excellent songwriting, John...

Crisp.
Your vocals are so clear. Deb's vocal sounds real nice, too. the mix on the chorus is so good. You find yourself swaying long with it. So well done.

Beautiful orchesration
I love builds - and this is gorgeous. Starting with when Deb enters to adding in the violin and bass. It just swells with emotion with each layer. The other thing is that violins can be overpowering depending on how they are brought in and this performance and mix works wonderfully. Poignant lyrics and well sung sir.

I'm so glad you had tome to complete the post, John - it's a treat.

Be well,
Doug

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
