Little Storm

Description
It's been a while.

This is a song for my loved Flaca. We used to watch storms that summer, sitting over the dunes in front of the sea, with a beautiful forest of pines behind us. That was our paradise.

I recorded the voice and the guitar together first. Because of that I can't correct one or the other without recording both again. I started with a click track, but the song has lots of little tempo changes; with a click track it sounded without life. I made several takes and choose the one with less glitches. I added the bass, drums and organ on top of that track, playing the keyboard and the pad controller. Then fixed the timing by hand with the midi editor (hard to follow the singer if you can't see him, even if the singer is myself half an hour ago).

A last word about the words: in case of doubt what the heck I am saying, well, it's not your fault :-) look at to the lyrics. Please, please, please take my worse than ever accent as an artistic license. And there's still a lot of nonsense even if you read the words... it's just the way it is. This time I found the sound of the words were somewhat more important than their meaning. And when my words make too much sense, I tend to think they are plainly boring. I'm getting lazy too ;-)

Lyrics
Little Storm

Little storm in d'fire
I want to uncover you, I want to cross your mind
Can you hear the rain
Cos' every drop in the sky is falling down now
To find you

Want to dive the storm
Want a sudden wind blow away your soul
Want to kiss the rain
Want a smile of light
Want to hear the thunder come
Smell the ground going wet on love

I will go and feel the rain (I know what I feel)
Will you come and feel some rain (I know what I feel)
We'll welcome the dawn (I know I'm feeling alone)
We will drink a drop. A drop of love.
They're falling on you now.

When the rain fall
It will seal the doors below the ground
I will sing a song and sail
I've been alone all the time, lone all the time
Your face is an angel somewhere, and now I'll end
Ah, can you feel it

Someone in ... grace. And now we'll sail away
away, away...
Now, I'm now feeling light

There's a Neil Thing Happening Here
A bit of early Neil Young in this. Good song writing. And it has an old school production vibe like one of those early 70's singer songwriter albums. There's a hypnotic quality to this I just love. Great job producing a live feel with time changes on your own. I find that to be the most frustrating thing to do. You did a great job with it.

Now that you say it
There *is* a big chance of a NY influence. 'Will to love' (from American Stars 'n Bars) came immediately to my mind when you mentioned it. I wasn't thinking about him when doing this, but, man, I couldn't be more happy you found a link. When adding the organ I did think of Counting Crows.
I'm making some experiments with tempo changes in GB. The trick is forget about the tempo settings: make a base track and follow it (that would be the new click track). It's harder to work that way, I guess with collabs would be even harder, but sometimes it's worth it.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Jack
Thanks a lot for your comment. This one took me months to do it. I'm happy you like it.
The rain sound is another experiment I wanted to make since long ago. It's a cliche, but in this case it's somewhat relevant to the song, but specially helps a lot in masking the hiss of my low Q preamp (I set the input level to 11, I was 4 feet from the mic, to record the voice and guitar together and the hiss was blowing my hair inside my headsets). It was also the first electric storm we had this year in Schaumburg IL, and man, happy I was: like a child. Baseball and electric storms mean summer is coming.

So glad you liked it. I think the flat 5th is one of the blue notes. You have well trained ears; I could never identify a note by its name just by listening. Blues notes come naturally and visit me very often when improvising, and sometimes some of them hang in a song and there's no way to get them out of there ;-).
Thanks for the comment

Great dark vibe here, reminds me of AIC. Gutsy choice recording the voice and guitar together but it resulted in a great live feel and it accomodated those cool tempo changes. Nice job!

Dark vibe
Glad you mention it. The main problem with this song was it needed to accommodate the tastes of my wife and mine at the same time, and the overlap is very narrow. I was afraid it was going too far on the soft/cheesy side... well, it goes, but at least it's dark too.

Hey mate.
I prefer to hear this and all your tunes with your accent I think you are being a bit hard on your self in that respect. You have a great voice and many ways of using it. Subtle and genuine song writing. It is always a pleasure to hear what you are cooking in your musical kitchen, all the ingredients taste good to me.
Ambitious tempo changes, something that eludes me. It is a cool song my friend.

My friend, you are such a so freakingly nice person. There's a chinese proverb (or at least somebody told me it was chinese) that says "if your problem has a solution, don't worry, but if it doesn't have a solution, don't worry". The latter case applies to my accent :-). I was opening the umbrella because I know I could do it better; but it is too hard to fix because of the way this was recorded.
I'm so specially glad you liked it. Thanks mate!

I had to listen to this twice, I like it, I think it has potential to be great, I like the live feel but it left me wanting to hear the studio version, I really like the guitar lick at 2:12 I think you might consider a studio version, I would get Vic involved he would really add a great dimension to this and I hear a second vocal dual vocal harmony kind of like a soundgarden w/ yours, just my thoughts, it's very good, I think worthy of a studio cut!

At this precise moment just thinking of recording the song again makes me choke a little bit :-).
You are right in the sense the recording is too "indie". I wanted to give it a sense of intimacy and freshness that a bigger sounding track would ... well it wouldn't be the same. And sincerely I was a little bit tired too. This song was an obsession that lasted for around 5 months and I needed to move on.
Now, since I already made the spontaneous/fresh/indie version of this one, I may give it a try again for the studio version. But in a while. There are so many other things I would like to work on now.
Just thinking this song deserves a better technical quality tells how much you liked it. Thanks JD.

So nice to see you playing again your stuff (which is excellent). I needed that book too. A couple of months ago I was going to throw away the whole idea of this song. It was in pretty bad shape, completely plain and lifeless. I couldn't put all the advice in that book into practice, but I took the advice of relax a little bit and have a mic always near. And then, without warning, about 2 weeks ago, a completely new vocal line came out over almost the same chord sequence than before. It was almost an improvisation that lasted for about 3 minutes, and if you listen to that improv, it's the same thing you have here, with different words.
The tempo is perhaps too inconsistent (specially after the bridge, it changes too abruptly), but I liked it anyway. Another advice from that book: there's no need for perfection all the time.
Thanks for the listen Scott!

Hermano Dani!!

Billy this is great. I love the sound of the vocals and guitars recorded together. gives it a cool overall sound. you did the MIDI really well too, everything sounds right on time and the slight bit of "not quite on the grid" makes it sound more like a live band. you're voice sounds great too. great track. now which organ did you end up using?

So cool you liked it. Editing the midi was interesting specially for the drums. I realized I'm too anxious to be a drummer: always hitting too early.
The organ I ended up using was the '57 Drawbar Organ, the B3 emulation that comes bundled in Native Instruments' Holiday Selection 2009 (for others reading this: this is a free package full of cool instruments; worth a try).
And if I give this one another shot, man, I'll let you know for sure.
Thanks for the feedback Michael!

I'll be up front at the start - I'm not a fan of sound fx in my music. I think you probably let the rain run a little too long here - but that's just a opinion.
The song is fantastic (in the Neil Young mode). I'm a huge NY fan, and I really like the way you've put this together. Like the light and shade - terrific big sound, great vocal too. This is great. I'd probably like to hear a tad more of the drums, but that's a minor nit indeed.
Classy post!

Yeah, rain sounds are cliche, but on the other hand I like its noise. It's not an effect though: it was fun to wait for lightning to press record while asking everybody in the house to be silent, mute the tv and hope a 747 won't fly over heading for o'hare. It was an experience. You know, after all that hassle in the house I better use the sounds! In fact, the rain sound was all over the song until very recent versions of the mix. *That* was too much :-)

I love you hear a NY touch on this one. Love his music too. It's possible the drums are too low, I was adjusting the velocity until the last minute because the beats were too hard, and I should have turned the level up a little bit to compensate.
Thanks for the tips and glad you liked it.

Woman and Storm; the metaphoric power play
I literally shook my head trying to find the word/s to describe the nearly indistinguishable bond between the storm and your Flaca as portrayed in the song. This acoustic guitar rocks and your voice is a dagger through those clouds. The keys -- whoa! I really appreciate the download. Plus I'm a sucker for any song with guts AND sailing, rain or shine.

You nailed it. The lyrics are a little ambiguous in the sense that the subject moves from the storm to her to me quite freely. It wasn't really on purpose as I was trying to match the words to the music and some words sounded better than others no matter the meaning. The song asked for those words. I also tried to extract some sense from them. Not the Nashville school of songwriting right? :-) And man, I love your interpretation.
Thanx a lot for the comment. Hope too see you soon if you are coming around here!

Neil Young is one of my favorites; Harvest is always with me and American Stars 'n Bars was one of my few own discoveries (most of the music I listened when I was a teen came more from friends than my own purchases). Besides the musical genious, the man is just authentic.
And I'm terrified of just thinking to play live :-)

Preguntando
Hola otra vez pibe!!! Te hago una pregunta: no termino de entender (parece ser que mi inglés no llega a tanto) por qué tuviste que grabar la voz junto a la guitarra. Tal vez una breve explicación me aclare el asunto.
Abrazo grande!!! Besos y saludos a todos!!!!!
billykirsch said 2669 days ago (April 30th, 2010)

Has a "Days of the New" vibe to the backer. I think the main vocal is a bit too reverbed though. I know what you were going for but it may be a bit too much of a good thing, it sounds a bit too distant to my ear. Love the vocals and the songwriting on this piece though. Great work here!
