The Pick Eating Guitar (featuring scofugate)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
First, thanks to Eduard (aka Drakonis) for giving me the quirky idea for the lyrical content of this song. He tossed out some ideas at random and I thought this one was brilliant.

Next, I owe great thanks to Scott (aka scofugate) for laying down the awesome groove in this song. I wrote the song from the bass line up. The bass line took me a week to learn how to play. Once that was done I sent Scott a track with just bass on it and asked him if he’d be interested. Man, I can’t believe he said yes after hearing a song with only the bass part and nothing else. He’s a really, really, really good sport.

I really love working with Scott, he’s an awesome guy and one heck of a great musician.

Lyrics
The Pick Eating guitar

After I play my guitar I leave the pick in the strings
I come back the next day and it’s the damnedest of things
The pick is gone and the guitar sits smug
I look around the stand on the table and the rug
There’s only one conclusion that I can say
That the guitar ate my pick when I was away

(chorus)
The pick eating guitar is in cahoots with the sock eating dryer
They drive me crazy I know that they conspire
With the change eating couch and his mean old brother
The key eating lock who’s meaner than no other

The change eating couch is the only one who is kind
He’ll return your change if you have a mind
He asks you not to tell the others
So he doesn’t look weak in front of his brothers
You find the change and think that’s pretty sweet
Then he says “Hey, let’s keep this between you and me”

(chorus)

The pick eating guitar is in cahoots with the sock eating dryer
They drive me crazy I know that they conspire
The key eating lock patiently waits
Until you’re hungry tired and arriving late
You’re home and life seems pretty great
Then he strikes making you so irate
So irate

Great lyrics!
Clever and fun. Super well played bass line. I like your new surfish sound since you got that strat, the playing and tones of the guitars are top.
The chorus is as usual catchy and a nice step up in contrast and oomph to the verses.
My guitars don't wait for me to put them down before the eat my picks... Play lick, like it, grab pen, jot idea on pad, try and play again, lost plectrum and pen, losing my mind... Everytime.
Nice one.

Thanks
Ed for dropping by. I think this is the last surfish song for a while. I have several in the works with max distortion.

Another great rocking song from you Michael... great composition and playing... love that guitar in the back as well as the bass.... my guitar was owned by Robin Hood I think, coz it keeps shooting my plec' off at an angle, cheers M

Whoa!
Damn guitar always eats my picks, too. Where do they go?

This is tops. A great, fun tune. Smiles

Bass sounds good as all the others. Drums were especially nice.
Oh yeah, awesome words.

Wow! I Miss the Clash
Great punk/new wave/power pop. The vocal is very clash. Love the bass line. Great rhythm guitar sounds. Love the twangy guitar sound riffing behind the vocal. Great instrumental section at 3:13. This is exactly why I keep the picks and guitars in separate locations.

for having a listen and for the nice comments. I've been on a retro kick lately. I'm not really sure where that has come from. I'm usually a hard rock kind of guy. But the diversion has been fun. Working on this project with Scott has been very enjoyable.

I'll have to remember to keep the guitars and picks segregated.

After your comment I gave the song another listen. You're right, the bass is back in the mix a bit. I brought it up a little after getting Scott's drums but it definitely wasn't enough. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Sheer lunacy
and I can detect the hand of the Drak behind this. A man who likes to play with words and concepts as much as I do.Very well realised and put to music with so much angst and outrage against the creatures that conspire against us.I wonder tho' what the Change Eating Couch is really up to ,I am not so sure about it being benevolent, p'raps not to be trusted !

fasteddie said 2522 days ago (May 2nd, 2010)
Ok Chris
I'll have to keep my eye on that change eating couch. He must seem benevolent but on the inside he's just as crooked as the rest. drakonis suggestion was so quirky that I just had to go with it.

Glad you ask me to do this one. It put me in such a (retro mood) .the double snares in the choruses. (60's with a modern edge. You are a great songwriter and I cant wait for your next one!!!

Thanks to you Scott!
You really did an awesome job on the drums! You really nailed the retro vibe and the retro groove perfectly. There was no way I could have programmed drums and gotten the same effect. The groove factor was so important in the song and just would have greatly lacked without you man!

It is always a pleasure.

for having a listen and for the nice comments. I really loved what Scott did with the groove. He is really good at getting that toe tapping beat going.

I think that I'm going to have to play the strat with some distortion for a while. That might take getting used to because the twanginess of a stratt shows through in the distortion even.

Great fun
Love the B52s vibe here. I always know where to find my picks when they disappear -- they migrate to a spot just under my couch. I think they gather there to plot their escape, but I always foil them. Great collab, gents.

First of all, the track rocks, totally caught my attention. Then you started singing & as I read the lyrics, I was hysterical. My Grandma used to lose 1 slipper, never failed. She always blamed the little green monsters, go figure. Awesome tune!

missing picks
just a tip, I always find them in jacket pockets.
great song!!
cool chord changes, really great idea to start with the (challenging-sounding) bass line. I gotta try one that way sometime.
Scott's drumming is unbelievably great as always! I would kill to be able to play drums like that and get the recording sounding so good.

fasteddie said 2522 days ago (May 2nd, 2010)
Writing the
song from the bass line up is actually kind of cool. It's hard to get the bass line down initially but after that the guitar feels like just jamming along to the bass. I may take that approach more often.

Scott is the man; he tears it up on drums!

I really enjoyed I Wouldn't Let It Get to You. You and Scott tore it up on that one.

for generously giving me the idea for the lyrical content for this song. It was such a great idea. I could have added at least 3 more verses but the song would have been 8 minutes long. My goal was 3:30 but I overshot that a bit.

Nice work on this
I really love the surf vibe that this song has. Very nice drum groove and guitar playing in this. I think there are a few too many words in places in this song. That does not allow you add as much swing to the vocal as I think it may need to compliment the swing of the backer. This song sounds very good as is but could be even better with a little swang in that thang!

I'm sure that after the last couple songs I've written that it must be somewhat apparent that Dick Dale might have had a teeny tiny bit of influence on my playing style.

Although his style is really hard to imitate. That crazy rapid picking on the clean channel is crazy.

Scott did a great job on the drums. He really got a great retro sound for the song.

Pick Eating Guitar
I'll be darned, I have two of them too. I suspect them of eating the picks and digesting them in the body, but ever since I installed magnetic pickups in the soundholes, I can't reach inside to check.

Your guitar tone is almost indie-rock on this one. Excellent rhythm section too!

How'd I miss this? The lyrics are so tossd-off but so well conceived -- I mean, pick & sock conspiracy? -- you have to love it. The beat's perfect, so are the guitars, right up my alley.
