Description
A folky song I wrote last weekend--still not quite ripe, but I'd love some thoughts...

Bagpipe: a little too much? "Ornithologist": too many syllables?

Everything is Words
I like it Michael, bagpipe gives a nice sound and mood to the song. Did you think about giving it just a little more place in the song ? Could it accompany the lyrics on background or fill in between phrases ? It's quite a personal taste though. I think the key point I could bring is the sound goes nicely with the song. I wish you best the way forward putting finishing touches, I like your songs and sound very much.

Everything is Words #2
Forgot to mention, "ornithologist", I didn't really feel something breaking the rhythm really. Cheers, all the best.

Bag Pipes
The bag pipe is actually a nice idea except for the intonation on the note at :08. I know that's the nature of the beast. Perhaps change that one note, but otherwise I would keep it. It adds to the somber nature of the song. A beautiful melody. I like the slowly building arrangement. Great guitar. Love the electric piano. I like how you release some of the grit in your voice on some phrases. The production is very good, extremely clear.

Lovely song
and great lyrical ideas. To be honest I'm a bit 50/50 with the bagpipes and agree about that one note that seems maybe 'wrong'.
I like 'Ornithologist' makes the listener take notice and fits perfectly to my ear.
Enjoyed.
Cheers
Len

ornithowhat?
i'm not a fan of bagpipes. my scott ancestors and my deceased grandfather are rolling in their graves but there i've said it, bagpipes suck. i think an organ would sound better. i really like the chorus, and the concept, and the lyrics are brilliant but there is one line that i don't know if i buy...'if you grow escargot'...i also don't know if i like the vocal styling on the 2nd line of each chorus stanza, where you pull back from the mic and give it the gravelly treatment. I don't think that adds anything, and i think it takes away from the otherwise folksy and intimate tone of the song. Well there you are since you asked for it. But really dude, you have that 70's folk/adult sound down pat, and it's a pleasure to listen to.

i like the subtle percussion and the picking is great as always.

Everything
i like the bagpipe! that note andrew refers to at .08 - sounds like you could change the backing chord to match and you'd be good. you did this in just a weekend? that alone blows my mind michael!

Excellent song
Great lyrics - baker bread - undertaker dead. Classy work Michael.

Really impressive. Bagpipes could be toned down a little perhaps and smooth out that note but hell, I wouldn't worry as this stands so well by itself anyway!

Ornithologist is brilliant. Very clever.

Great vocal as well.

Cheers

I'm hearing a dissonance on the bagpipe at :08, otherwise I like it. Cool device linking the occupation to the preoccupation. Ornithologist works insofar as the rhythm of the song goes, and even if the listener does not know what one does, you tell him in the next line. Good vocal, cool song.

one little note
seems out of line indeed on the bagpipes but man i sure do like them in this. Love the lyrics here .....1:20 everything just moves ..... lovely tune.

Another
very nice tune friend!
Still loving your pure sound!
From a percussionist stand point, I like the little tapping going on. I am hearing (in my mind) a distant tamborine on 2 and 4 in the last couple of verses. Distant metal shakers in the chorsus and solo parts.
Remember: I am a drummer, not a musician .haha (or spelling bee winner)
Just a thought...sounds great to my humble ears though.
Kudos !!!

Michael, you are such a great songwriter!
I must apologize for missing so many of your songs. So much music, so little time. Your writing and singing blows me away. The depth of emotion, the style, the instrumentation, vocals, phrasing, wow. If you played at a club near me, I'd be first in line for tickets.

and of course the lyrics too
Bagpipe is so remote and a new utopian vacation spot - away from humm-drumm - yonder grass izz greener -
good vocal timbre range within this piece.
and the build from the begining is good. . . i.e. when the bass comes in . . .
at the end - you are opposing 6/8 piano
keyboarding with the duple 4/4 congas or whatever - and this
makes the sound right there starting at
3:45 very dimensional - really

sweet
guitar and really good singing. top lyrics too. like that electric piano. i'm not sure about the bagpipes - but i don't particularly like bagpipes, so don't listen to me. i've heard them played badly too much. top song though. well thought through. nice job.

I think
an organ with a sound like Van Morrison used would be preferable to the bagpipes. If you stay with the pipes, I would thin it out a bit and lower it in the mix. I am not a big fan of the gravel voiced line either, sounds a bit flat and strained to my ear. The lyrics are very good; I would leave them as is. Good song!

Excellent
vocal tone & arrangement to a well written song,, Thanks for sharing.
while browsing MJ your song has a much higher volume than others. I agree with alackbass about the BP also gets a little sour at .21(same note).. I would love to try one of those some day.

I dig the pipes. A nice left turn. I like your lower singing register. This has a touch of Lyle Lovett style whimsy.
