Lyrics
The Test of Time (2010)

We've been living this life together for more than thirty years
sharing barrels of laughs and buckets of tears
we go together tequila and lime
you boost my confidence and I allay your fears
when you stole my heart
it was the perfect crime
our love has stood the test of time

We've gone through many changes as the years have slid by
changes where we live, who we are and what we buy
we've been as low as a valleys we’ve walked
and high as the mountains we've climbed
what’s mine is yours
and yours is mine
sometimes our talk is pedestrian
sometimes our conversation is sublime
our love has stood the test of time

some things need to be overlooked
some things need to be ignored
mostly we’re happy and never bored
it’s realizing everything doesn't have to be perfect
lets everything work out fine
what new lovers are praying for
we've already experienced for a lifetime
living up to our potential
hasn't always been easy
to say otherwise would be lying
still our love has stood the test of time

Poets have been singing about love for thousands of years
nothing lasts forever, Darling, I know that's true
but we found a way to keep making music
we found a way to keep our lyrics in rhyme
until my dying breath
I'll be true to you
I'll be the pump and you be the prime
our love has stood the test of time
our love has stood the test of time
our love has stood the test of time

Time to sing
Ha-hah ... not quite the same as singing "in time."

Thanks for listening and commenting.

Test of Time
How wonderful to be able to celebrate a union of such duration, and with such conviction! Congrats to both of you, and on this great song!

How it originated ....
While listening to music one day I was stuck by the number of songs that fervently proclaimed that this would be a love that would last forever. Yet more relationships seem to fall apart than stay together for any great length of time. It dawned on me - after thirty years of partnership with the same gal - that that was getting fairly close to qualifying as "forever." Once the line "test of time" popped into my head, the song took on a life of its own.

A different sort of love song
Clever lyrics and a feeling of shambolic warmth comes through.

Cheers

Shambling
Indeed, Dick, if there was only a genre category here at Macjams called "Shambolic," I think about 72 per cent of my material could be slotted in there : )

I notice you've just hit the 1000-mark for songs signaled as personal favorites. That's an impressive contribution to this social network. I know my work has been included a number of times in that tally - thanks for all of the return visits.

I mean this as a significant compliment:
This reminds me of something Mikki Nylund might produce. I'm a huge fan of Mikki's music. Lots of wierd stuff going on - terrific vocals, and a nicely "out there" backing.

I think you could have framed the instruments a little better on the sound stage (less hard panning on the guitar for starters), but this just gets better and better as I listen. I'm even getting a Zappa-esque vibe here.

Excellent post Warren.

Cheers from Oz,
N

multiple versions
Now I'm not even sure I posted the "finished" version of this song. Lately, it seems more of my songs are getting developed piecemeal, with whole sections, or bits and pieces, added at different sessions - as opposed to working steadily on a single effort over days or weeks. I confuse myself. After a while, when I can think of nothing new to add or change, it is declared "done." Usually, I try to delete old versions as I go along, but there are multiple takes - many with alternative names - littering the hard drive landscape.

As always, I appreciative your critical feedback. It's helpful.

You know I am a fan
and this is up there among my favorites of ours. Love the lyrics... so clever, love the music... without tether, love the theme of the song... forever; and when you put it all together... Great stuff (couldnt think of another rhyme that worked). Really good job on this.

Where did your songs go?
I haven't forgotten about your offer to collaborate - I'm sure something appropriate will pop up sooner or later. But what happened to all of your songs? Most of them have disappeared from your Macjams site.

Lyric
When that line popped into my head (I was in the shower running lyric ideas through my still sleepy head) I knew in an instant it was such a wonderful phrase that I couldn't believe it hadn't been used before. I keep expecting it to show up in another song, somewhere : )
