Muddin

Description
Happens every Spring - I find myself out in some muddy pasture for whatever reason, dropping off hay or shuttling the vet around and I accidentally on purpose mash the accelerator and do a little 4 wheel spin. Just for kicks. Because I don't care who you are, throwing a 4x4 around a muddy field is ecstatically fun. I dare you to not like it.

Musically i'm just trying to capture all the angles of it - marshall tucker, classics iv, molly hatchet, barefoot jerry. All the stuff that would be cranking through the kracos when we were kids, all the stuff in our heads, the girls, buddies, trucks, that old soul vibe that informs every southern kid regardless of background and is always there, even when sharing space with skynyrd.

Lyrics
been 3 weeks since the last snow
jeanie's wearing short shorts 'round the house
waiting for that warm breeze to blow
the creek is falling
the stock is still up the hill
the lower forty's sitting there empty
waiting on some good time to kill

let's get a little muddy

seems like summer's coming so slow
jeanie's at the tan salon
just waiting on
that warm breeze to blow
spent the winter time inside
lifting up
my pickup truck
it's just waiting for a couple fools
for to see what she can do

let's get a little muddy

(six pack/4 wheel drive/one horse town)

Your holy trinity: wheels, mud and girls?!
I love the stories you tell, with your little references that illustrate your lyrics -- like the WWF, bungee-corded radio and Trapper Keeper in your last outing, "Rink Rats" to the killer slice of life you present here -- "lyric dynamics." Also dynamic is the varied arrangement and construction of song-sections here. But between the last tune's Yz80 dirt bike and now this, I have to ask... what is it about mud and girls that drives you... are you searching for a mud-wrestling roller-derby queen?

girls and wheels
man i don't know, girls and cars, that about sums it up. the mud is always around, i grew up on a dirt road, we live down 4 miles of dirt road now, when it rains you've got lots of mud. and there's just something about a good looking gal that's not afraid to get dirty...that's good stuff.

Hey this paints a great picture and i love the soulful singing and the laid back groove of this and the harmonica and the "sha na na's"!! Good one. Mark

4 wheelin Yee Haw!
sounds like a heck of a good time, thanks for sonically reproducing the experience! You can do the same thing in an icy parking lot. cool harmonica part, really like the occ. bursts of heavy guitar. and of course you are the king of the outro.
fantastic! downloaded.

the problem
with icy parking lots is all the stuff there is to run into. i've been there done that. nice thing about a pasture is that unless you go into the creek you really can't hurt yourself. i figured that most bands would approach a tune with this subject matter as a stomp and i wanted to include that, because you get that rush of adrenaline, but it's too fun to stay like that, the overriding feeling is simple 'good times'. glad you liked it dude.

glad you liked it. i try to get the description just right. i realize that spinning a truck around in the mud is not something that lots of people have experienced these days, unless you count watching inbred types do it on youtube. so i wanted to try to be true to the experience.

What great atmosphere. Killer groove out front. The harmonica was such a cool surprise. Like the horns in the 2nd verse. This one is MJ gold.

i've been practicing
harmonica on trail rides. it irritates the snot out of my horse. i have a hard time doing a song without horns. must have been that solid year of phil collins in '85.

What I like about
this song the most is the style shifts. Like you and your buddies are flipping through the radio stations while your muddin. Probably looking at skirts. The vox and harp that come in after the rock guitar are born out of hormones and good times. Kick ass tune, brother.

hormones and good times
now it's hormones and bad times. the world spins on irony. i like that flipping through the stations idea - and storytime - my buddy broke his arm trying to change cassettes while we were testing a dune buggy that a bunch of us built out of an old VW chassis. turns out that all that foam the pros wrap around the rollcage is not just for looks.

Like the spare arrangement. The guitar is playing an interesting line against the bass.
The harmonica is a nice touch. All American lyric here. Who can resist doing donuts in the mud and short shorts?

short shorts are definitely for spring mudding. in summer the seats burn your legs. glad you liked the guitar line, i had to fiddle around with that a while until i got a counter melody i liked.

Muddy
I think you got it all in and then some. The blue-eyed soul verse, the pop/country verse
and metal/mudcat bridge. And the whole thing-lyric, melody, production works as a seamless whole. Love your singing on this. Helluva catchy verse and ride out. I really admire your originality. Just an excellent track.

'sounds like no one but tempie' is a cool compliment man, thanks. also like the whole 'ace' thing. i'd start saying that but i'd sound like a poser. similar to the way it's popular around here with some to say 'no worries'. like joe preppy maryland is freakin crocodile dundee.

What a sophisticated arrangement, in a song about muddin'! You travel a fur piece in 3:30 here. Harmonica may be my favorite corner of this tune but, as Joe Maryland Preppie likes to say, "It's All Good."

From the first note
I was going to love this. A musical gallery - all the different style exhibits work really well in this exhibition. Craig, I've been really slack in keeping up with your posts - this will change. Love your vocals in particular. If I had a nit (and I'm really searching here) it would be that the voice recording is a little sharp at times - maybe a little top end EQ would just ease that off a little.
This is a really good track - love it!

you know, in the spring
i don't bother washing it. too much trouble and it just gets dirty again. although the people that help my daughter out of the truck when i drop her at school probably wish i would. glad you like the mix! i used to mix entirely with headphones but i set up some monitor speakers in my "studio" (basement workbench) and i'm finding that mixing in the phones first and then tweaking over the speakers seems to be the ticket.

Mud Master Flash
I think that I actually heard this song about a hundred times before it was ever posted. I just realized I hadn't actually visited the song here on MJTV.

Sorry for the delay.

I still get a nostalgic image in my head when i hear it. There's bit of a hoopla in the front yard when Uncle Mike finally comes home from the war (WWII) and all the kids drop their slinkies and come running to greet him....

I like the feel good harp playing, the crunchy power chords and the funky bass combination. Your soulful hayseed vocal orchestra always amazes me. 10 harmonies and 15 sets of lyrics. Not even my dog can hear everything you've done!

Nice work man.

Bob

PS

Hard to believe you drive such a messy truck.
