Description
Hi - I can't play guitar for toffee unless its strumming some chords. So in this I used slayer2 vsti plugin.Thats right - there isnt a single guitar in this at all.Its a tune I wrote while I was an art student in Brighton and I was lucky enough to get a full brass orchestra to play this at the Pig In Paradise Club as it was known then.I was hooked on the tune 'King Kong' by Zappa - but I always wished he carried on the them a bit more. Its not much like his tune at all only in rhythm and maybe some chords here and there - I like the them from King Kong much better but I quite like this one too.Hope you enjoy it and that proper talented guitarists arent offended by me playing it on a keyboard,if anyone can come up with a better solo on a real guitar - I'd much prefer to put that in so get in touch.Thank you very much for listening - Rich.

some of the kids at school tho still remember when i used to sweep the dinner hall before i started teaching piano. It was just lucky they gave me the music department to clean! I try to get a pro sound true, but i sometimes miss the roughshod quality of earlier stuff - some of which i posted as category lo-fi,as the recording quality was that bad - theres technology for ya.think i'll go back to plugging in headphones to the mic socket on a portable tape player and record through those for a change.Thank you Vic

Master of a thousand genres
New style again, you master of a thousand genres. I am amazed. A tune filled with the paddlic creativity we've been habituated to expect from you. No cheap-line articles from you my friend. Hope your life is terrific and gives plenty of room for the rare creativity you're carrying.

Excellent bit of work here, Rich
Right out of the late 70's early 80's, but with a more cohesive feel. Love the keys in this and the excellent playing chops you've got my friend.

A very cool to wake up this morning here in Arkansas,

Ed

today is the first day for a year I could actually leave it at home due to the heat type wave.bit confusing really - found it really hard to get a lighter, some tobacco and rizlas all in the same place at the same time as very usually live in the sheepskin pocket - not in my '''''''''manbag''''''''' hahaha

The Pig in Paradise
I wasn't hip enough for clubs in Brighton but I can see how this would have gone down well.

Excellent work. The "guitar" is very Zappa like and remarkable considering it's a keyboard.

Cheers

Thanks Dick
the only hip thing about my life in Brighton was that I managed 10 years of getting plastered, threatened, and in potentially violent relationships without ever once getting arrested.I just googled the pig in paradise - it was a pub i think near the clocktower somwhere - the club was above it called 'the lift'.god only knows if that still exists or what it is now.I remember most of the brass orchestra were on benefits and a guy with a rhodes piano who kind of lived in the box of his piano at night.i think it was the only time i got paid off the door for playing an original set - a kind of platform for the hopeless

Richard, this hums. Those lead lines thread a great tune. Sounds like you went for a little Zappa in the 'guitar' solo. The key solo was nothing short of intense. This is fantastic writing & playing

Hey Rich, for not having a "real" axe on this one, you killed it. I mean in this day and age what is "real" anyway when it comes to music, what with all the amp modeling, patches, pans, pads and pedals! Krazy Kuhl Jazzy and sick Santana/ Crimson/ super sustained distortion as well. What's not to like?

Sorry to take so long, Richard...
This is really nicely realized.... The only Zappa I actually own is the "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar" series, and this reminds me of some of that... Great polyrhythms going on.... Only thing that could make it better would be if you suddenly inherited some absolutely state of the art synth samples and stuff.... The intertwining and interacting lines and timbres here are really something...
Daugrin said 2531 days ago (May 24th, 2010)
Evocative
Nicely done take on the trademark, the George Duke like piano solo lifts the composition in the manner of the original. Maybe it is too full... "the sparkle" section anyway... just a style.
Amazing what can be done with the tech... it would take hours just to set this up to record real players...
Thanks for sharing your talents here at MJ. Great stuff...

This is a well crafted tune. Energetic groove. Smooth bass line, cool percussion, jazzy keys exceptionally well played. I think the faux guitar is just fine - it's results that count, and the software is good enough so that it's really hard to tell the difference.
