Kullu Haze (w/Tokai)

Description
Steve sent me a file of about 1 min a couple of weeks ago, with the name "kullu test", with a chain of heavy riffs to start a collab. I liked it, but for some reason Steve wasn't very sure. I asked for the same file without drums: I wanted to put some kind of Bonzo drums and see what could happen. I cut and pasted different parts of this guitar+bass file to create a longer song, and then added some drums with ezdrummer. In that moment we knew we had something like a song.

I asked Steve about the name of the file, if there was a story behind it. Kullu is a city in India where he traveled recently. While he was there he had some problems with the owner of the hotel he was in. His story reminded me of a trip I made to Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador many years ago. I mixed the stories and wrote the lyrics.

Enjoy!

Lyrics
Kullu Haze
2010 - S. West, B. Kirsch

I can remember the moon on the Kullu highs
I can remember my fate in the moonless nights
The things forgotten are those I miss the most
I don't remember your smell

I can remember the man with the golden tooth
I can remember the smile hiding the lies
He was selling some stuff I didn't buy
And I was buying some time

Kullu Haze

The last day I was there he called the priests
That crucified a man some time ago
Then I got off away without my shoes
The innocent is barefoot

Kullu Haze

Hey Michael
Thanks a lot man. I like it when YOU say it's heavy! :-)
The riffs Steve put together are great. After living with them for 2 weeks I can say they are tricky too. The pull-offs in the descending side of the main riff and a couple of weird shifted bars would be an interesting thing to play live.

Great riffage
Really cool sound to this and the drums are great.
Double tracked vocals are getting that cool Ozzy cross fade sound.
I would have maybe bough the backwards style at 1.28 just up a bit in the mix..but apart from that cool cool track
cheers

Yeah, the drums made a big difference. EZDrummer (just the basic package) is awesome. Is the first time I try a tone like this in my voice and a double track helped a lot in making it smoother. I'm quite happy with the results.
That guitar seemed to be too low or too loud depending on who knows what. I was changing the level all the time. I guess I posted the song in the middle of a low cycle. For the CD... :-)
Thanks for stopping by man.

Cool song
Wasn't expecting something this heavy, caught me off guard. Very cool. I think the vocals are a little low in the mix on this but probably just a matter of taste. Other than that one nit pick, very well done. Killer vocals and guitar playing.

Hey man! yeah, it's a little bit different to the things I was posting lately, but actually this is my zone ;-)
I love Steve's music and we went ahead with a collab after he came from India. My first "proper" collab too. We had a lot of fun.
Agree with the subdued vocals. It's in the dna of the genre though: the riff is as important as the lyrics.

haze air, dis is good.
adrenal injections of angst, with nowhere to go except through the fingers, across the strings, and into the hazy air. Great guitar work, excellent mix and singing, and lyrics that leave a lingering taste of burnt regret in the air. The question will remain unanswered... why does the man in Steve's photograph have a titanium replica of a Zardazian starship around his neck?

Here's the man
It came out pretty good in the end, right? The raw material was there. I was marely a dj gluing your parts man (lol). btw, in the description I should have said the initial file was about 1 ton, instead of about 1 min.

I made a couple of late minute changes as you can see. It won't be that fun for you otherwise ;-). I was never too sure about the second line, but I like this one much more. It's another contradiction, but true: to remember the future.

I learned a couple of interesting things in the process. I'm glad you sent me those tracks man.

Ah, yes. Adrenaline flow. Good, good. Great to hear Steve driving a tune with his guitar --- great riff. Love the title and lyrics. Billy delivers the right sound for this, with well placed backing vocals. It's only a detail, but I must say that the stop at 1:50 is just too cool. Hell of a photograph too. Great work, gents.

Well,
perhaps a little magic was involved? I love that Billy was able to hear what it needed. The photograph is oddly terrifying. So much color and it seems, determination, on the man's face. It think the whole thing is about danger when you can't know someone's intent. Wonderful music and lyrics and vocal. Excellent collaboration. :)

Your interpretation is right on: you never know what somebody else is really thinking, or what he/she will do. In the case of the man in the photo, perhaps he's a pacifist. In any case I'd be careful with him.
On the other hand, smily people could be more dangerous.

Straightforward hard rock is good for your soul. That's what Steve discovered in Kullu with Dr. Gupta.

I found the vox level is very sensitive to the acoustics of the player/headphones/speakers. In my monitors and car it sounds fine, in my other computer it sounds lower. I don't know.

Them Crooked MacJammers
Guys, this hunk of metal is HOT. Fits in a playlist with Queens of the Stone Age or Them Crooked Vultures. Deadly but so well blended and melodic that it's not metal, it's just music, period. The Kullu theme seems to fit with the time-honored tradition of taking us to places ugly gringos like me think of as exotic (and Kashmir is taken).

And damn: EZ Drummer strikes again! If I find some money laying around, I'll be tempted. (Watched the YouTube marketing vid, seems tops in user friendliness, too.)

Man, you really know how to make my day! :-)

Kashmir, what a song. But you already know it's inspired on a trip Plant made to Morocco right. In this case is the real thing (well, not really, I don't know Kullu neither ;-). It seems you won't look like a gringo in Kullu if you are barefoot and a have a wild look.

I got the basic ezdrummer package, nothing fancy, but it works. It's easy to use too. Tip (if you ever buy it): play with the kit configuration and mixer to get the sound you like. And practice with drum tablatures.

Thanks Bob!

I thought i commented
on this Billy? I've listened to it a few times,... wierd.
Anyway, this is really good Not my style of music to listen to but I might reconsider after hearing this, it's very good and it's hard and in your face intense but totally listenable and likable even for a guy who likes classic rock, in fact my only suggestion would be to turn up the vocals and maybe add some effects to them, very well done colab! The ez drummer drums sound great!

So cool you listened this one even out of your comfort zone. I really appreciate it. It's even better you are reconsidering your genre boundaries because of this! That *is* a cool comment man.

And, yeah, ezdrummer is a very nice addition to any music toolkit. Drums are so important and so hard/expensive to record/play that without a software like that, all our home recorded music would sound lame. Same with the amp emulators and DAW software: no way we could do this kind of music without them.

Thanks for stopping by JD.

The good news is that we could make CD's of anybody here at macjams :-)

What I would love to do with this one is to play it live with Steve and Scott (scofugate). Man, that would be AWESOME!!! I don't know who would pay for the tickets though... ;-)

Steve
Thanks for the listen. Love the style of your comments! Full is a great word to describe the guitars. I didn't have to touch anything there: Tokai sent me the files and I just had to lay them down in GB, no effects, a tad of eq just to make some room for the voice and that's all.
Thanks again. Be well in your 'vacation' destination! ;-)

Fantastic!
Wow, this drips and oozes blistering tones like a runaway train. Great vox, lyrics and the drums fill in nicely,

Dave
Is it possible that 0.5dB higher is too high? That happened to me mixing the vocals in this one. Also in some places (car for example) it sounds just right, in some others (work computer) a little bit low. I guess it's a little bit on the edge, so may be you're right.

Billy, The drums are the star here. Absolutely fantastic. I think the vocals need to be bumped up significantly though, they're great, but sadly they're buried. Driving guitars, tight arrangement, what's not to like. DL'd and fav'd.

Phil
The drums were so much fun to work on, trying to follow the cuts on the guitar and thinking -what my friend Edu would do here- (Edu is Eduardo Altamonte, a friend I used to play with down in Argentina).
It really made a difference on the song. Hats off to drummers. The foundation of rock is there. Somebody said here in MJ there's no good rock band with a bad drummer. I'm still looking for a counter example to that assertion.
Thanks for the vox note. I'll count the positive and negative mentions on that topic and... well, perhaps I'll do the same next time :-) No, seriously, I think I have a problem with my monitors: too much mids ==> all in the mids gets buried. Even the inverted guitar seems to be buried according to another comment.
Hey man, nice to see you again!

Melodic metal
Consider my comment to be "what they said". Everytime I try to make a note on someone else's song, I read the ones that have come before to see if my note is still original. That's the thing about being late to the party ... there's very little new to say. I wanted to say that the vocals were strong enough to deserve a bit higher billing, but Charles beat me to that; I wanted to point out a turn that I liked, but Reggie_Pole beat me to that; I wanted to be effusive about the way that the riffs are tight and the story cool, but pretty much everyone beat me to that.

I use EZDrummer's bigger brother, and I'm so with you - the Toontrack folks really know how to sim drums. So many little elements that they got just right in making EZ - and they've kept it very accessible. I will say that there were a couple of spots where I wish the note-to-note velocity variance on a fast fill were just slightly more exaggerated. Anybody who knows me knows that that's my pet peeve (and I probably lean too heavily on it most of the time). But that's picking a nit on a great song. Cheers!
