Milk Teeth (Demo)

Description
Indie 'til I die.

I was playing with open E tuning on the LP and came up with this big sound that was originally put together for a collab which never came off. The music came easy but the lyrics and vocal tracks took much longer. I think it's good production wise but not too sure on the words. Still, it sounds authentically indie and that can't be bad ...

Lyrics
Got a picture of you on my dashboard
Got my car in top gear as I'm pushing forth
I remember your dad
Telling me about your princess days

I been counting the hours
'til I get on this road
Fairytales come true
My fairytale is you

And I know
You still got your milk teeth, your milk teeth
in a bottle at the end of your bed

Joining I-95
I'm overtaken by someone driving a Tesla
It ain't an omen

I got a mix-tape CD
Bunch of stuff I downloaded from Macjams
You know, those guys they try so hard

And I know
You still got your milk teeth, your milk teeth
in a bottle at the end of your bed

Getting closer to you
in so many ways
But I'm bridge and tunnel

Feeling really stupid now
When I can't find my way to you
Then it dawns on me, I'm not American

Now I know Rhode Island's not an island ...

You sly devil...
I caught that plug for Macjams....that's just one of the wonderful things about this Paddy! Marvelous production (excellent sound!) and the song is very easy to like! I kind of agree with you about the words--mostly they flow very easily but there's a spot or two where they sound a bit uneasy, but these are very minor quibbles (small potatoes really). This is a Grade A job, well worth the effort, and I really enjoyed it!

Pluggin'
I figure no harm can ever come from pluggin MJs. Glad you enjoyed the tune, and especially the production - I put a lot of time into the guitar sounds.

rhode island's not an island
great song!
I guess I should out myself as the deadbeat collaborator (writer's block!)
anyway, you did a fantastic job on this one.
I especially like the insistent guitar riffing and tone. fade out on chorus works well.
keep rocking paddy!

Deadbeat?
Not at all. Just ask Craig how many times I've sent him music to work on only for him to see it as a finished song here a week later! Glad you enjoyed it. If I re-record the vocal I'll be looking for backing vox ...

Sort of has a
Fountain's of Wayne vibe to it. I like the pop rock vibe of this piece. Catchy sound to it, easy on the ears and well sung and produced. Nice MJ reference in there! Enjoyed it.

Fountains of Wayne
I'll take that compliment. FoW are one of my favourite bands for their quirky story telling and all-American picturescapes. Thanks man.

Vibe..
I like the vibe, I tend to agree with michaeljaykle that the lyrics flow nicely with a couple of exceptions, but very fixable for a song with potential. A bit of old Weezer vibe for me...good job!

Weezer ...
... another of my favourites. I've always loved their big chunky rhythm guitar work, which I use all over my recordings. Great compliment man.

i really like the milk teeth concept
'in a bottle at the end of your bed' - swell! loving and creepy. that's the stuff. i like the phrasing on the 'driving I95'/overtaken...reminds me of an old 70's folk/rock tune for just a second and then slides right into a more modern sound, really dig that. I don't know if you need to add lyrics, i think it sounds good. i like the places where it's a little awkward. anyway don't ever visit the states. i really really like your mythologized version. trust me. it would be like me visiting england. it would be cool but i bet my imaginary england is so much cooler than the real place. anyway this is one of my favorite paddy tunes. it's really quirky, in a way that's very unique to you. i'd do more along these lines.

Paddy's America
Yeah it's a mythologised America to be sure. I figured you'd like this. No matter how much I try and produce something that doesn't sound transatlantic, I can't. I don't get 'British' rock (Blur, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis etc) and pretty much everything I listen to is from the US so the influence is inevitable.
I like that you find this unique to me - seems a Paddy sound is starting to evolve. Cheers!

Big Sound
I like that big guitar sound. Very 90's grunge with a melodic pop vocal. A fun and cool track.

Big guitar
I've always been a sucker for big guitar and fey vocal (Yo La Tengo anyone?) so it was a deliberate intention here to go down that road. Glad you dug it.

Very catchy
Very smooth catchy number. Nicely played and sung. I always like songs with a sing along quality to them. Good stuff.

Production
I was worried initially as I'd started this in Garageband for a collab, meaning that production options would be limited in comparison to Logic. However over the years I've learnt a lot about production and mixing, so I was able to get some really good balance in this mix. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.

Demo?
Hardly--you sell this tune really effectively just like this. And I like the lyrics very much as is--the last couple stanzas in particular have that particular mix of funny and emotionally-true that really appeals to me.

HUGE sound
It's the perfect indie tone. Distorted, but you still get the melodic guitar bits. This might be my favorite Paddy tune. Melodic and fun. And probably the best production from you yet. The lyrics work perfectly for me. A few lines stand out (in a good way) but most of it just kind of exists. Which, as much as I love good lyrics, is how I prefer my indie pop.

Very cool
This is quite good on all counts. A solid bass line would push this over the top.

Screams to be downloaded!
RE your intro coments: Au contraire; the sound doesn't HAVE to be 100% for a demo, but the words do. And the songwriting's great, from the title image & chorus to the Tesla on I-95 and first-person dashboard confessional. (Tempie -- Craig -- is another one here with good lyrical imagery that suck you into slices of life. Among others, etc.) Since it's a demo, I don't need to critique the mix, sound or arrangement, though they're fine. Your band is lucky to have you bring-in such a clearly conceived demo. (Assuming it's for a band vs. your own studio effort, but in any case a great one.) Definitely screams for me to DL it, so thanks.
