Description
This is just a demo for a new song I've put up for the band. It's just me trying to carry off a band "feel". Rough and ready, and definitely no polished diamond, but I kind of like it. Can't wait to do it live. Drums are midi.
Feel free to dance.

Lyrics
Out Of Control
©2010 Neil Porter

Do you remember when you were at school?
All of the books and all of the rules
Do you remember the guys that used to sit at the back of the room?
They were putting everybody down
Playing the fool, acting like clowns
Do you remember the guys at the back of the room?

They went way past the limits
They were so rock and roll
Their hearts just weren’t in it
They thought they were cool
But they were just so out of control

You get a little bit older
And you’re having a drink at a bar
A group of the same guys drinking at the back of the room
You know that they’re out for a fight
Before you know it it’s fight or flight
Do you remember the guys at the back of the room?

They went way past the limits
They were so rock and roll
Their brains just weren’t in it
They thought they were cool
But they were just so out of control

SOLOS on verse

They went way past the limits
They were so rock and roll
Their hearts just weren’t in it
They thought they were cool
But they were just so out of control

Watch them jump in a car at the end of the night
Someone out there’s in for a hell of a fright
From those guys that were drinking at the back of the room
It might be your sister it might be your mum
Out in their car sent off to Kingdom Come
Do you remember the guys at the back of the room?

They went way past the limits
They were so rock and roll
Their brains just weren’t in it
They thought they were cool
But they were just so out of control

rock'n roll
What a catchy, straight rockin' groove. This one will fill the dance floors immediately. Cool lyrics, and ditto melody and arrangement.

Cheers Thor
and thanks for your ongoing interest. Married eh - well done - congratulations!
This was designed as a set-opener. We have lots of good songs (our drummer and guitarist are both song writers too), but not that much staright-up rock and roll - so I decided to write one.
Best wishes from Oz for you and your wife,
Neil

Do you like "Dire straits" cos this have some influence, but I mean that in a good way, I love theme and I love this… It had been cool to hear it live with you and your band… Cheers

Dire Straights
were not one of my favourite bands Kenta, but I really liked Mark Knopfler's guitar work - especially on "Sultans Of Swing", which at the time seemed absolutely amazing. I'm doing more and more solos with the band, so I'm trying to develop my lead playing more. This style is what usually comes naturally.
Thanks for the listen and the comment.

Neil nailed it
You nailed it Neil. For a couple of years I was a victim of these guys. Glad your'e givin this back on them. Play it loud :)

I also dig the piece in the sense that I can so well understand how you long to do it with your band. The rocknroll feel of this is just soo right and pleasant!

Johannes!
This started out as something quite different lyrically, but would have been a little too controversial to play locally. The original inspiation was the death of a young local person - who I'd known as a client at work - in a single car accident late at night. I just shifted the lyrics around a little.
We had a run through it with the band at rehearsal yesterday and it will sound great I think - a perfect "quick rocker" for our sets.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Good to hear from you Ed
I'm trying out my "new voice" on this - which pushes it way up compared to what I normally do. It's fun, and lets me tackle more aggressive songs with a little more credibility. This is just me playing on this - hopefully we'll have a new band track or two up soon - we're in the middle of yet another morphing period. Hopefully we'll have a great keyboard player coming on board soon.
Best wishes from Oz,
Neil

Thanks for the listen Charles
The live sound is from using first and second takes only, and, apart from a little taming of the lead track in parts, no editing. It's all fun on this one, despite the message.
Cheers,
Neil

Should be a band version up eventually. Lots of new music from PBGB is being recorded at the moment - it's beginning to surprise me how good some of it is sounding.

Craig
I watched the Stones doco on "Exile on Main Street" just before I wrote this, so no surprise about a Stones vibe. I was especially watching Keith's rhythm parts - he's a freak of a rhythm player. Our (hopefully) new keys player should do a great job on some honky tonk piano ;)
Thanks for listening - much appreciated.

I'm pretty pleased how my guitar playing is going - I've been just a bassist most of my life. Unfortunately, this is the only style of lead guitar that seems to come naturally. Always fun though.

Hopefully
there'll be a room full of dancing bods when this one cranks out Maurice. It's funny, but I'm getting more "rock and roll" as I get older - isn't it supposed to work the other way around? Thanks for mentioning the bass - I just put on my first new strings in an embarassingly long time, and am really enjoying the sound.
Best wishes from "Down Under", and thanks for the listen.

I really like the voice
in here. Sounds too cool Neil! Smoky! It melts so nice with the instruments (in the latest posts it was a little bit too loud for my taste, but we know we have different opinions here ;-).
Let us know how it goes when played live. I can imagine the crowd jumping to the front for a dance. That will be fun! :-)

I haven't really used this "voice" much, but have been encouraged to do so by our drummer - seems to work OK. I never know how loud my vocals should be - maybe I got this one closer to a good level?

Glad you had a listen
and enjoyed Adam. For a change, I hadn't even thought of backing vocals - you're absolutely right. I'm sure there are lots of songs with this structure and style - it's not really an innovation :)
Thanks for dropping by,

Sometimes...
Sometimes songs don't need to be innovative and this is a great example of that. Part of why this song works so well is because it feels familiar, which in turn makes it more accessible to a wider listening audience!

I agree with Kenta, I hear some Dire Straits in this ("Walk Of Life"). Your lead playing sounds somewhat country. Cool song, I like your vocs on this especially, and there are some good lead licks.

A bit of Chuck Berry to this....
Reminds me of the Dead doing 'Promised Land', just a bit....

I like your slide-y licks on the Telecaster particularly, and I think you're stepping out of your usual thing in your approach to the vocal.... You're phrasing like Springsteen, I think.... Reminds me of the Springsteen and Zevon recording of 'Disorder In The House'.... It's ALL good, but I really like the vocal and the Telecaster....

I also like the lyrics, and the lyrical structure....

A very good one, Neil....

Classic
I never sat at the back of the class room. The teachers always wanted me up from where they could keep an eye on me. :)

You've got such a great classic rock feel here, not just the music, but the lyrics as well. Very cool. I wish my songs could be as "unpolished" as this.

I hope the band decides to pick this one up. It'd be great to hear a live version of this one at some point, maybe with some nice rowdy guys in the back of the bar.

Long live rock and/or roll.
Almost not demo at all, mix is well balanced. Your studio ear increasingly catches my attention with that great separation.

I'm happy to hear rock 'n' roll, it's a pure form for a good time. Even when you're painting a picture of some unenlightened rockers in the back of the room who were too cool for the front. (I hope the stage was in the back!)

A fun band song
You've captured the feel of this piece - both in you you've instrumented and sang/played it as well as in the ambience of the mix. I expected you to say - "Thank you, thank you very much" in the last few seconds as the audience bursts into wild cheering and applause.

It seems these back of the room guys are fairly universal after all.

Another winner Neil!

I'm with Tempie and Vic
The Stones influence to me speaks from the drums. You've certainly channeled Charlie Watts' drive and steady right hand flavor on this one. The aspect that I usually rail against when writing MIDI drumlines (having repeating velocities on hi-hat/ride eighth notes without much variation) actually works for the song here.

I always like hearing you stretch out and do things that are outside of your comfort zone, and I feel like the vocals here were a new sound. It all comes off very well ... folks will clamor for more rockers from you, I'm sure.

As usual, the balance is well done - all parts with their own space in the sonic fabric. Good tones on the guitars and bass too. Cheers!
jiguma said 2647 days ago (July 19th, 2010)
Hi Mike
Thanks for listening and leaving a comment. Interestingly, I really only write this sort of song to play live, but the band has gone all arty-farty and wants to do my more complex stuff (at last!!!!!!!!). Just about to start work on "Too Many Ghosts". Main reason is we have a very good bass player now and a second drummer (a lifetime pro drummer who wants to keep his hand in - has played with all sorts of luminaries including Cocker and the Oz jazz singer Vince Jones). The old drummer does most of the work, but occasionally we have the services of Ken, the new guy to bounce off. It's been a long wait, but I'm pretty pleased we can now attempt 'jiguma" songs live. The "new voice" is fun to do, but plays havoc with my throat!
Cheers from Oz - hope the family are well.
