Description
This is only experimental in that it was an experiment. I've been really blocked for a while when it came to creating music in GarageBand having spent the last few weeks prepping for some shows with Airport Seven. So tonight I decided to set up some gear and record an improvisation without working in the usual way with GB and discreet tracks etc.
So what you have here is an unedited first take of a piece using the Tanpura Devi app on my iPhone - a Buddha Box - the Alesis airFX - and an apple percussion loop running through an old boss keyboard mixer. See picture above. The output from the mixer went into a Peavey KB 60 keyboard amp and was recorded on a Zoom H2 positioned across the room.
What I heard is what you get. This may require some patience (7+ minutes) - or be better enjoyed at a low volume with passive listening.
Part of the inspiration for this experiment was figuring out what to do at the next A7 show which takes place outdoors at 11am on a Sunday morning. Somehow guitar thrash doesn't feel right for the event.

Since this was posted A7 played the show and this idea is posted from the set at

You know the feeling is mutual
you are a ray of sunshine around here - and a major fellow traveler on this journey. I was actually thinking about you when I did this - back to the sleeping aid piece - and Confluence.

This is a kind of a piece
where you don't feel the 7 and something minutes pass ... The beat, the athmosphere just keeps you stuck till the end. I recommend this for any hour of the day :-)

I took your advice
and read a Jeff Passan article on Joe West while listening. But I was struck on a few occasions. The drone, in particular, is very nice. At first I thought the percussion would get repetitive, but it didn't. It added to the effect of the drone nicely.

The umpire?
Interesting. Thank google - I'm not that hip to baseball. I was concerned about the percussion too - but kept hearing the emphasis slip around while I was playing so I stayed with it.

Thanks
I was looking into buying a tanpura or tanpura box ($800 or $200) because I'm a drone freak. Then I found the iPhone app for $4.99. It's excellent - fully tunable - rate variable and clean or variable modulation.

What to do when blocked
This is a great example of how one can get some creative juice flowing when they feel blocked. Making music in an unconventional way can unlock ideas previously hidden. As I listened I was struck by the clarity and quality of the recording. Those Zoom recorders are great. I need to get to Guitar Center and buy some new toys. Quickest 7:00 minutes I've heard here in a long time.

Many thanks for the kind words
I really needed a change - but still wanted to work in a live mode. This is mixed 4 to one through one amp - the Zoom does 4 channel "surround" recording. I'm looking at my 6 different amps right now and getting some more ideas. You can get good deals on the Zoom online - often with no tax and free shipping.

Imagining
...how this would sound outdoors 11am on a Sunday morning...
I imagine a park, sunny, warm, flowers, people wandering, artisans, a smell of incense and food. I imagine suddenly hearing this music coming from somewhere. I imagine going where the music is coming from like a bee smelling boiling honey.

Nice set up Billy - thanks
Not sure that our bass player and drummer will dig the mellow vibe as much. Might be a set opener that leads to rougher terrain. The event is Figment 2010 on Governor's Island in New York harbor. Think Burning Man for the whole family. Actually - I took my whole family to Burning Man - but this is much more tame.

live that employs multiple inputs. I was given that little 4 channel keyboard mixer by a neighbor and it come in really handy. I was tempted to add more stuff in post but was pleased with the flow of the minimal tracks. Nice of you to drop by.

adapters
Bud, I can always count on you to show me how to break out of a "block". I couldn't help but think of all the adapters in this picture, just a Radio Shack salesmans dream. What a hodge-podge of stuff coming together to create a really cool drone of a journey. iPhoned and ready for my next run. You da man.

simple and sweet...
...it got an hankering to whip out my handrums, Bud! Maybe some might listen to it passively but to do so would mean that one would be missing a ride on the an organic gruv train! lots could be done w/ this piece and, little to no work at all is just as well! Sweet! thanks for sharing your setup there! curious to see what else you're gonna end up with after a bit of time with it. very cool! dion

perfect for a sunday morning
or any other time of the day or night. i so so so LOVE your experiments. i also love how creative you are in getting the sounds you use. Not too long ago, none of the things in your list of technology used even existed and look at you now! I was just watching a BBC Life episode on how absolutely essential adaptation is to survival. and the music industry is changing so incredibly fast these days - you, my friend, are going to survive and prosper. this is awesome. another really great bud "go to sleep" track. i love it.

Hypnotic
I don't know if I'm in a meditative state or a trance - either way, this is great. I know who I'm calling on for inspiration the next time I'm stuck - Mr.-fountain-of-out-of-the-box creativity himself :)

Great one Bud. Thanks for posting.

Doug
