I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Now this is one of the greatest songs of all time and Fred Heatherton, the English composer who wrote this, deserves to have his name in lights up there with the likes of Gershwin, Lennon, Ellington, and Bernstein. This is the type of song that was traditionally performed in the old English music halls and with that view, is dedicated to all my MJ friends across the pond.

Thanks again and have a great week!

Michael

PS: I apologize in advance for the great storm of controversy this tune is bound to generate.

"I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts", written by Fred Heatherton circa 1925.
Vocal and vocal effects: MJK
Accompaniment: The All-Star Coconut Orchestra, directed by Hans Zoff

Artwork: A coconut obviously under some distress

Coconut in distress
but a great great listen. You sang it so nicely Michael, your voice had quite a different character here. I discover so many great tunes I didn't know much about and I am enjoying the discovery. Thank you so much.

Hi Yves
Oh yes, this was more of a "character" vocal from me and I only hope my "accent" passes muster (I'm sure I'll hear from a few of the English chaps on this site about that sooner or later!) Thanks again and hope you are having an enjoyable weekend. Take care now, Michael

Good Delivery
I think this is a great performance. The song has a strong carnival feel and then I realize it's alomost a century old. Amazing.

Hi Mike
Many of these music halls were located in resort areas of England by the beach, so there were many midways and a carnival type atmosphere about them. Thanks very much for stopping by and happy you enjoyed this old chestnut--thanks again and cheers! Michael

You're a nut!
And I love it... one of the most ubiquitous songs out there, and you still infused new life into it! Got me smiling today, thanks Michael! Nice orchestral arrangement you found there.

Thanks Eduard!
Believe it or not, this song was the only big hit Merv Griffin had when he sang with Freddie Martin and his Orchestra in the late 1940s, so I tried to sound like him when I sang the intro. Glad you enjoyed it--take care now! Michael

What a coincidence
I bought a coconut yesterday.

I hear a little Dick van Dyke in the accent but I take it that's deliberate :-) (then again you should hear my American accent.... )

There are some great songs from the English music hall. Most of them are thinly veiled ones about sex but all good clean fun.

A very nice version and I'm pleased you included the intro as that's very rarely heard.

Cheers

Dick

Hi Dick!
I'm afraid most my ideas about English accents come from old Hollywood movies starring Herbert Marshall or Cedric Hardwicke, but I gave it my best shot! Yes, there are some very lively tunes that emanated from the music halls and I hope to do some more eventually (I may be the only American familiar with George Formby!) I greatly appreciate you stopping in Dick and for your kind remarks---cheers! Michael

I AM OFFENDED!!!!!!!!!!
how is that, lol. that should drive people here to this song. Nothing like a little controversy to drive up the ratings. I have always loved this song too. Very well sung. The backer on this one is a bit underpowered but your voice carries the day as always. Where did you get this backer? It doesnt sound as full as the others

Thanks Charles
Oh, I know ALL the tricks, believe me! Glad you liked this--it's a fun song and fun to sing. Truthfully, I do no remember who did the backing or what (I recorded this some years ago for somebody's birthday)--it may have even been a midi file of some kind (memory fails me) so yeah, there's not much oomph to it but it fills its purpose nicely I guess. You take care now and hope you are enjoying this long weekend, Michael

I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts
Whimsical tune with a marching band feel to it.
Hans Zoff is a good director but I prefer the more involved work of his cousin Hans Zonn. Another great vocal here.

Maurice!
Oh it's definitely a carnival-midway type of song and maybe even more fun to sing than to listen to (I better not say anymore!) Is "Mary Poppins" the only American movie you folks have seen over there? All this Dick VanDyke stuff--I don't know! Just kidding--thanks again and much enjoyed your song today Maurice; you are so good it almost makes me jealous sometimes! Take care now, Michael

Greetings Karen!
I'm very fond of coconut cream pie and in fact, this evening my partner baked something called "magic cookies", which was not stingy on the coconut, let me tell you! That coconut was in fact a member of your household, as I interviewed it for this song at the local Starbuck's and your name came up a couple of times. Some sob story about how it was rolled away from you at an early age, being shy and never coming out of its shell--there was more, but I'll just say it really milked it for all it was worth. Thanks again and take good care now! Michael

I go
cuckoo for coconuts. I wonder if this is a thinly veiled sex song. Oh well, I guess that would be the case if you were singing about a pair. But, now..you never cease to amaze with your energy and your crazy, good fun. You make me smile no matter how my day is going. You are a happiness machine. And you are worth whatever is needed to be put in the slot, and then, some! Thanks. :)

My little coconut
Thanks for making ME smile! Oh, I rather doubt this is some thinly veiled sex song (although it could be a thickly blanketed porno tune--one is never quite sure about these things). You take good care now and hope you are enjoying this Memorial Day Weekend, Michael

Hey I've got
a couple of coconuts, I keep them in my drawers, briefly except when I take them out and try to milk em, as I remember a couple of monkeys got together and made gave them to me, I've played with them so much the fuzz is starting to wear off, maybe I should just leave em alone! nah!

Brilliant! Now, i've spent lots of money and many an hour flinging balls at coconuts... Um ooer. Ah British carry on humour, it cant be beat!
But seriously, i have. I even managed to knock one out of its horseshoe holders and win a fish once. Very proud moment for me as i was trying to impress my 14 year old girlfriend (i was 14 too just to be clear....)
Ah memories.... Often dream about what happened to that fish :)

Nice tune me old mate

A very strange song
You don't suppose ... it may have ... a double meaning? I've never heard the chorus of this before. In the UK it used to be that you heard the first line of the song and that was it. It's interesting and amusing to hear the rolla pola chorus, and slightly disturbing. What was rolling, and who had the pole? I'm working my way thorugh you interpretations of these great old songs, and am impressed. Please post more Formby when you get chance. He was a genius. Good luck with the Lancashire accent!
