Lyrics
Buried in the yard under three feet of earth
In the arbor, lies a box made of tin
Buried in a field under six feet of earth
Lies a pine box, a soldier within

The tin box holds a medal
For bravery under fire
The pine box holds no medal
Just a boy whose life expired
Just a boy
Just a boy

Someone has to tell
Tell his mother he's gone
Tell his mother he's gone
Tell his mother he's gone

Buried in the yard under three feet of earth
In the arbor, lies a box made of tin
Open the lid and you'll see for yourself
A medal for courage lies within

But the boy who won the medal
Is haunted by the face in the ground
Of the unknown soldier
That his bullet found

Buried in the yard under three feet of earth
Buried in a field under six feet of earth
Buried are the spirits, never rising again
Of two boys, two soldiers, two men

Touching Commentary!
It's typical for us to focus on valor and service each Memorial Day. I think we tend to say the word "sacrifice" without really considering what that really means. And if we say things like "Thank you for your service," then we're free not to consider that true meaning of sacrifice. Your piece here is a haunting reminder that sacrifice means families suffering unimaginable loss. And sometimes they're not even sure why the sacrifice had to be made. I think you've provided some important balance here. Thank you!

Thank you, alack. My nephew is about to join the service. It frightens me a great deal. Such a terrible time to join. Not that I don't understand his goals and reasons; I just don't want him to be in that pine box.

Beautiful
Such a heartbreaking, melancholy tune. Beautifully done. Love the sparse sound. This really is a case where less is more because it lets your vocals shine.

Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you so much, jg! When I want people to focus on lyrics, I tend to scale down the musical bed so the lyrics are up front. Thank you again for your insightful comment.
