Lord, Lord, Lord, Give Me a Break

Description
In 2008 I posted a version of this song that I felt pretty good about. But since that time I've raised my standards due to the comment, suggestions, and helpful tips I received from my fellow MacJammers.

So I decided it was time to put some of that to work and see if I could make this old song sound better.

I shortened the intro part and added some harmonies (yuck) and then went through the song and tweaked almost all of the tracks for timing, and sour notes. Then I remixed it and tried to kick it up in the heat department so maybe now it sizzles more.

Whether I really learned anything, or just have a big ego is at question here, but ultimately it's for all of you to decide that.

So here's the "HOT" version of this old classic.

Enjoy,

Ed

Lord, Lord, Lord, Give Me A Break
Words, Music and Arrangement By Ed Wemmerus

Verse 1
Standin' on the bandstand tryin' to sing a funky song
When this ugly guy comes up to me and grabs my microphone
Sayin', Hey there Mr. Guitar Man, can I sing along.
There ain't nothin' I like better than to sing a funky song

Chorus
I Said, Lord, Lord, Lord, Give me a break ,
Yes there is a limit, to how much I can take
I don't have the inclination, --- To accept your invitation
I said, Lord, Lord, Lord, give me a break,
There's a limit to how much I can take

Verse 2
Talkin' to my manager, told him to get real
He said, you know you can trust me Son, this is quite a deal
Despite his reassurances, I got a different feel
cause the contract that he handed me gave him the right to steal

Chorus

Instrumental Bridge ( 1 verse and chorus )

Verse 3
Talkin' to my Congressman, after he had won
To ask about his promises, and what he said was, Son
If you could make a contribution to my favorite fund
Maybe we can find a way, to see that it gets done

Chorus
tag lines:
I said, Lord, Lord, Lord, give me a break,
Yeah Lord, Lord, Lord, give me a break
There's a limit to how much I can take
Oh yeah

Great Guitar Licks
We've all been there. Although as I get older (and lazier) I tended to accept the invitation. Great lyrics all roadhouse musicians can relate to. Your guitar playing is killer. And love the organ.

I can remember being both the Guitar player,
and the big ugly guy in this song, at various times in my life. ( of course I was never really big ) So writing these lyrics was almost autobiographical for me, but I'm willing to bet they are some a few others too.

I wanted to try to really get this one right this time so I don't have to revisit it in the future. Time will tell !

Thanks for checking it out and for the very kind words on it. I do appreciate that. I'm glad you liked the song.

Be well and be cool, Andy

Massive overdrive
Flanger, compression, some reverb and delay, a honkin' big amp & cab, and a well placed ribbon mike.

In other words, Bob, the lead break and play out were all Apple Loops. Not so much the rest of the guitars, although even a few of those were loops too. Okay, so I cheated. It was what the song needed, and I didn't have the right setup to make that kind of noise. That said, in this particular song, I think it really made it stand out in those parts.

Glad you liked the song Bob, even if I did cheat on the test.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

isn't that the way
you give a song some time, look back and then realize how much farther it can go. this is so crystal clear

the effected guitar is a real trip. i'm not sure what you did to get that sound, but it's slick as all hell.

Thanks Vic
It seems every time I do a new song, I learn a little more about arranging, producing, and song structure. I'm sure that's true for all of us, but especially with some of the very good feedback we get here on MJ.

So Yes, when you look back, you se and hear the flaws you never even knew were there the first time around, and then the second, and so on.

As for the "effected guitar", I'm fessing up, it's loops I sliced and diced until I had just what I wanted. Hey, we use the tools we have to make the song as good as we can, and that includes Loops, and even other musicians that can do something we either can't, or won't do ourselves.
It's called producing, I think !

Glad you enjoyed the song Vic, and I hope you're not too disappointed about that guitar part.

Be well and be cool, my friend

Yeah, it's the musician's lament
If you've ever played in a sleazy bar, you know all about the first guy. Then you got a manager to get out of the sleazy bars, and learned about the second. Right now, we're all learning about the third.
Like I said in an earlier response to a comment. I've been both the Ugly Guy, and the Guitar player in this story.

Glad you like how the new version came out, Dave, and I do appreciate the listen and the kind words on it.

On the Organ,
I played that part 17 years ago, but could never get it to sound right until now. Thanks to Logic and the ease with which you can clean up and track that needs it, I finally am happy with the Organ part. As for that scorching guitar part, I hire one of Apple's excellent musicians to play that. They're very good, and they work cheap.

Thanks for listening, John, and the kind words. Lifts the spirits a lot.

Terrific impact from the first note, Ed....
The electric guitar and organ, in particular, have a lot of punch with my speakers...

That guitar break was like "Richard Lloyd goes country"....

That was the plan for this new version, Ed
Make those speakers work for a living, in a good way. So your comment is good news to hear on this end, for sure.

What can I say old friend. I love this Funk stuff almost as much a Blues, and Country.

But, it's time to set the record straight on "The Solo". The solo in the break and at the end were done using a bunch of loops that I sliced and diced until I had the exact part I wanted. God how I wish I could take credit for that one, but I admit I cheated and took the lazy way out on this one.

The thing is, it's not that I couldn't do it, but I just didn't. I hired a bunch of Apple's musos to play that part of the song. The good thing is they sound great, and they work cheap.

About 3/4 of the track are what I programmed in MIDI when I first put the song together in 1993, although for this version I went in and did some major cleaning up and tweaking of each of the tracks for Bass, Organ, Horns, Drums, and a few other parts.

So there ya go Guy. I couldn't live with myself not telling the "Rest of the Story"

Thanks for listening and the kind words. Some I deserved, some I did not. Never the less I appreciate the kind thoughts that went with them.

Be well and be cool my friend.

The only two things that will keep from being there are some kind of medical reason I can't control, or having that final conversation with the Grim Reaper. (I don't see the latter happening any time soon, but the Good Lord has control of that one).

I'll try that suggestion on the directions to the caw pasture and see if it works. If not, I'll use it the right way around to find YOU. ;-)

Me too,
but in my case I've been both the "Ugly Guy", and "Mr Guitar Man", and not even in the same decade. But at least I wasn't drunk at the time, and they actually let me sing to a groove they were laying down while waiting for their singer to come back from a "Smoke break". I actually had the crowd up and dancing, hollering and really getting into, when the singer finally showed and I stepped out of the way to let him have his stage and audience back. It was all good that time, but I've seen it go the other way when I was playing for a living, many times.

On the song, I guess after working on this song sporadically over 17 years, it figures I would finally get it close. Glad you enjoyed the way it came out Mike, and I sure do appreciate you listening and commenting on it. Thanks for that.

Thanks Terry
Nicest thing I've heard all day, about the production on this. I was tired of this one sounding tame, so I decided to build on what I had, and infuse a mega watt or two more energy into it. I guess it works, from all reports.

Glad you like the new mix and the changes I made in the song, Terry. Thanks again for the listen.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Problem, what problem
I don't see a problem here, do you?

That's a very nice thing to say Mark, but when I go back and listen to the older stuff I realize that they need redone too. When I can consistently get them all to have the same impact as this one, each in their own style and genre, then I'll feel a lot better about my body of work.

Of course to become a Classic Car, a car has to be at least 25 years old. For me that means in car years, I'm and antique something on the order of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. But we still try.

Thanks for listening Mark, your words lift my spirit.

Be well and be cool,

Ed
