Description
Last week I came across Telemann's "6 Canonic Sonatas" in a pile of old sheet music. Each one is a duet in which the 2nd part is an exact repeat of the 1st but entering later. I recorded this live straight thru using a long digital delay.(The 2nd part is a delayed repeat of the 1st) A dumb idea I know but I was bored.

Very Nice! Webern next?
This was very enjoyable to listen to, and very well-played. On top of that, I am hugely impressed that you did this in one take with digital delay...Wow! Did you have a metronome running through headphones, or, if not, how did you manage to start the delayed version so that it synced so well with the leader?

Another big fan of the canon was Weber; he wrote a set of 5 canons (op. 16), plus he used canons is several other works. Gonna tackle him next? ;-)

What's the significance of the photo?

I didn't
use a metronome- after trying it a few (many) times I got a feel for the correct tempo. Thanks for telling me about the Webern- I'll check it out!

I remember....
...a long time ago, watching you try to figure out some rock piece, probably something from The Edge, and get the delay right on one of the inexpensive delay pedals Wood & Strings carried back then... Trying to work out the math so the delays were landing in the right spot...

And here you are again, long years later, once again making it look--almost--easy...

I'm having to blast it, too, 'cause I'm listening with the air conditioning on... High volume Telemann is one of the world's least appreciated joys...
Ibstrat said 2650 days ago (June 20th, 2010)
Believe
it or not I think I remember that- I believe the song was "Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee" by Van Halen wanabees Extreme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOr-ZeOS9TQ I actually played the Telemann with no shirt on but for some reason there was no ecstatic screaming crowd at the end.

I know it can be learned but it still boggles my mind. Great piece and a very cool idea that worked a treat.

Two for the price of one
Very cool experiment in the art of using tech to it's better effects, Mark. (no pun intended)

Interesting tune the begin with, and I really think this can out excellent. It must have taken a bit before you got the timing on the delay set up properly. Very cool piece Mark

Mark
this is really interesting on a few levels - firstly the fact that you can look at apiece of sheet music and make it sound like music, second because of the technical detail of your playing, third the delay thing described by Ed, and finally that you can do this when you are bored.
I know I've mentioned the tone you get before, and I find this even more mellow in tone than usual. I have an ongoing disagreement with our other guitarist about the degree of sharpness of tone which is ideal. To me, he is constantly way too indistinct and "round" in his tonal choices, whereas to him, I am way too sharp. That probably explains why I find this one a bit "round" for my liking - more of a comment on my ears than your playing!
Excellent post.

still have this crappy problem with my left hand- this should be played on a classical. I tried to get a sort of classical sound on the electric. Glad you liked it!

delays delays
I enjoyed this piece, thanks. So, as you started to play you heard nothing at first until the delay period was over, then you heard what you played 1/2 second ago (or whatever interval the delay was set for)? That would mess me up severely I'm sure!

Not a dumb...
... idea at all! This sounds very interesting. The delay effect fits in perfectly, but we must realize that it's YOUR creative mind that made this piece sound as excellent, and as interesting, as it is. What a brain you've got to figure out such a great harmony?! I'm wowed.

Well...
...the music's great, as always. Telemann's such a fine composer. Your use of the delay is precise. Very nice. What's the pedal?

About the artwork...now, Mark: what, exactly, are you trying to say about this man? He who has inspired so many? One of the true architects of our downfal...I mean...our...uh...

Well...he certainly looks happy, doesn't he? Maybe that's because his case still hasn't been brought before a jury? Yes...that would make me pretty happy, I do believe.

Nice piece, Mark. Always a pleasure.

Canon!
I love playing these sonatas. Preferably with another recorder player, but I indeed a delay will do in a pinch....

Fun stuff. I would have put some extra processing (EQ, different amount of reverb) on the delayed guitar, to give it some more individuality.
