L'apres midi d'un whimsical vocal loop w/particledots

Description
This piece is created from two sources only. First an improvisation with guitar (picked and ebowed) and the iPhone mellotron through a Boomerang Phrase Sampler - buiding layers and reversing play then finally slowing it down by half - all in the Boomerang to one track in GB recorded off Peavey amplifier with Samson USB mic. Then I thought it might be interesting to introduce PD's Whimsical Vocal Loop that he dropped in the APOD box the other day. I put that on two tracks out of phase so it would loop cleanly and then mixed the resulting three tracks to what you have here.
The mellotron flute reminded me of "L'apres midi d'un faune" - hence the title and photo of Nijinsky.

Now this has taken
a turn I never expected

Bloody clever stuff Kevin - and I love your methodology

Now I wish I had worked a little longer on the mix
I could have ducked the backing and let your vocal come forward more. That's what happens when everything happens in thirty minutes.

Don't feel that I've thanked you enough
for your contribution to this piece. I think your vocal was an ear worm that sat back looking for a venue. Wasn't thinking of it when I strted this piece - but it dropped in so well.

Anomalous
I listened about 3 times, so many different scenarios danced around my head. Some are a bit morbid, so I'll keep those to myself.

Seriously, this was very cleverly composed. Did you have a certain vision when you created this, or did it just happen? Either way, I like it a lot.

RAVEN ;-)

Morbidity seems to be a default setting for introspection
it's dark in there - ya know? I thought the PD vox would lift the mood some. I had no vision - just a set of tools that I decided to work with and then let it go. PD's vox was an afterthought - but there seems to be some connection through memory.
Thanks for dropping by.

with the boomerang! cool experimental piece Kevin. cosmic

The Boomerang is a very versatile tool -
but there's no going back - only forward. Well you can reverse - and slow down - but you can't edit in any way - it's a pile on box.

It is slithery
and sinister. I was thinking about the snake in the garden of Eden and his penchant for toppling apple carts. Bryn has either turned you or you have turned him. That was wonderfully weird. :)

Looping
A trip to the lost frippland. Transported to those places the most experimental tracks of early King Crimson put me in.
I imagined something like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" while listening.
Timeless.

Interesting you mention film
I had the sense that the flute was lifted from it's own film. That iPhone mellotron app has a great organic quality.

I realize
it's actually quite difficult to come up with a tune that doesn't have a "traditional" song structure and still keep the listeners attention (specially for an instrumental). This is so nicely done here, very subtle and captures attention all the way. This gives me the impression that the song has similar characteristics as early Pink Floyd, songs like A Saucerful of Secrets and alike. I enjoyed this very much Kevin, a great work.

It's my intention to work for a while outside
of song structure - both solo and with Airport Seven. Lately it seems more interesting to me - though I know it can be tedious for listeners. That's the real challenge - isn't it?

sometimes
when I read your song descriptions I wonder if I have left planet earth and gone to planet Zod cos I am completely bamboozled.....then I think "Sod it" and listen to the music and it all becomes clear.....you are a raving lunatic genius ! (that's a compliment by the way)

p.s.I thought at first you had elbowed your guitar.

p.p.s. How do you ebow a guitar?
bud said 2468 days ago (June 26th, 2010)
An Ebow is a device that electricall stimulates
the strings of and electric guitar causing it to ring with a sustained tone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBow
Thanks for the lunatic compliment.

I'm probably not the first one to say this, but you're MJ's resident mad scientist. How do you come up with these ideas?

Bud
This is magical. Way beyond. Far outer reaches of the planetary rotational arch. Delectable in every way. Very "Glass-y" or maybe "Cage-y". But certainly very "Bud-y". makes me want to go out and get an ebow....haunting and contemplative and somehow makes me think of Fauvism, or better yet the soundtrack for a Georg Buchner play or a Satre novel. Amazing.

Thanks - lately I'm very intererested in viewing
music more like theater or film. Trying to create some abstract narrative based on tension and timing - with less emphasis on traditional structure and melody.
If it's not the mellotron flute you're referring to at 1:45 then it's the guitar in some form through the Boomerang.
Many thanks to Bryn for his contribution to this piece.

I keep expecting this...
...to break into '2000 Light Years From Home'....

I love Mellotron flutes... They have such a nice fur or burr on them, that keeps them from being the kind of cheesy that some synth flutes get to be...
bud said 2466 days ago (June 27th, 2010)
You are so right about cheesy flutes
they can be awful. This little Mellotron app has only three voices - the flute being the best.

L'apres midi d'un whimsical
I like the and the iPhone mellotron through the Boomerang Phrase Sampler (At least I think that's what it is) - it almost sounds like an animal call - maybe a big digital whale. Very calming and meditative.

The Boomerang is mostly eBow guitar
layered and slowed down - with the flute played over it at real speed and sampled just a bit towards the end. Then I mixed in Bryn's vocal in GarageBand.

The mellotron flute
and the piece as a whole reminds ME of good old Tangerine Dream, in this case the album "Zeit" from early 1970's. Really meditative and cool and didn't feel like over 6 minutes at all.

Thanks!

my yearning
for an iPad is NOT helped by all these iPhone apps you keep talking about and make such cool music with. I would love to be able to play guitar just so I could use an ebow. i love the completely different mood, texture and sound of the stuff that comes in midway through, although it mixes so well with the opening. you are so awe-fully talented at those slow, smooth transitions. this is great.
