Description
Well it's summer finally, time for mom to mow the grass in her bikini and the kids to hang out at the cul-de-sac. Ride your mongoose bike and bring your wiffle ball bat.

Lyrics
pour some captain crunch
sit and eat and read the box
find some shorts under the bed
pull a shirt out of the wash
play a record getting ready
diver down or foreigner 4
find your sneakers where you kicked them off
still tied
behind the door

there's a good time waiting at the cul-de-sac
ride your mongoose bike and bring your wiffle ball bat
it's a double if
you hit the smith's house
lose it in the woods
it's an automatic out

cut across the neighbor's yard
swing your ball glove at the bees
think about the trade your gonna make
george brett for don mattingly
you don't have to wear a watch
it's summer and nobody cares
knock on the screen door at your buddy's house
hear him running
down the stairs

chorus

swing batter batter swing
(it's the summertime)
swing batter batter swing
(it's the summertime)

Slice of youth - love your body of work
ONCE AGAIN you have captured a slice of youth not unlike my own. You're incredible, Craig. The intro's a little long by conventional standards but the payoff is there. Great arrangement, too; you know when to go spare and when to add power.

i had this idea
that the various parts would fade in and out of each other, kind of like good vibrations, but bob said that was weird even for him and i didn't want to lose the pop aspect of the tune so i settled for a fade in intro. so that's the story there. the spare parts are funny, they take the most work, trying to place each sound. glad you liked it!

A chorus so cool singing it once just wouldn't be enough. I love the vivid imagery. There's a low-fi vibe here that's very cool. "Swing batter batter swing" Where's my copy of Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

Ferris Bueller
man if every day could be a variation of that day off in the movie i'd take it. i'm a classic truant. glad you like the chorus, i'll probably never play most of these live but i always try to write a sing along chorus, maybe because i like singing in the car.

I think you're more connected to your inner child then anyone around here, and you are adept at mining that connection for your slice of life Americana saturated tunes. Catchy tune, easy to relate to. Good vocs, spare but elegant arrangement.

Very good work!
You remind me another on here in that you have a very unique style and "sound" that is very enjoyable and different (but hard to put my finger on). I'm hearing a lot of that on this--very cool song!

the cul-de-sac
where it all happens. I think I would really dig hanging out in your neighborhood, and not just because your wife is mowing the lawn :-) We lived for biking, street hockey and wiffle bat pick ups. Nice flashback for the good weather. This track will sound good at the barbeque!

ah man street hockey
i could have gone that direction with this tune, but since street hockey was more of a fall thing i stuck with wiffle ball. but we were serious about street hockey too. my neighborhood now is too rural to have a culdesac, and though my wife has been known to ride the tractor in a bikini it's mostly just unexciting me out there. i find i write best about things i'm not currently experiencing...

warmer days
i started writing this on my daughter's last day of school. i get as excited about that now as i used to when i was a kid since her being home means i have somebody to skip work with. bet the kids love the culdesac. we live in the woods on top of a mountain so my daughter is missing out. she doesn't even know how to ride a bike and she's 8. of course the pony kind of makes up for it, but still...

sa-wing batta
great song!
the first verse pretty much captures my typical morning, except I have to go to work instead of play baseball :(
I can tell from the comments that this will resonate with lots of people, you get to the universal thru the specific, as good writers do...
like the nice guitar sounds and wide mix, the 1-2-3-4, and just the whole overall vibe which brings back some good memories.
a worthy addition to the tempie canon, now sitting between "crusher destroyer" and "cumberland blues" on the relic ipod!

sa-wing
LOL! That's how i'm going to describe 'the tempie sound' from now on...'right between crusher destroyer and cumberland blues'.

your typical morning ha i'm with you. you know the best thing about being a kid is that you naturally take things as they come, and since you've got that attitude everything naturally arrives on your terms. that's a great way of looking at things but easy to forget, especially as you 'grow up'. i didn't want kids at first but man i'm glad nature took it's course otherwise today i'd probably be a humorless suit and tempie would just be a figment of my repressed imagination. and i'd be eating bran flakes instead of captain crunch, the best breakfast cereal ever invented fyi.

Brilliant
Though I'm still shocked there's debate between Diver Down and Foreigner 4. Foreigner 4 is a record Diver Down pushes around on the schoolyard. And the Mattingly trade is solid. He'll be in the Hall. You can have Kirby but no Don. Anyway, the lyrics are obviously top notch. So real. It reads like a journal entry from every young boy ever. It's all so familiar and there's tangible talent in effectively reaching so many with this story. Very well done. I'm jealous this isn't mine.

at my cousin's house in town. they had a kind of grass alley behind the row of houses and we played nerf football back there. always ended in a fight with tommy somethingorother, a bigger kid with a trashy attitude. i was always rocky bleier, running with the little kids hanging off of me like ferrets. Lawn Mower Class Action Lawsuit Ruins Summer For Everyone
4 1/2 horsepower, 5, 5 1/2 , 6.75 - they're all the exact same engine with different labels and different price tags. Glad you listened to me and dropped those verses. To me, summer was not like that at all.

I think you captured what you sought after with the fade in and fade out thing. As I advised you in one of our numerous conversations regarding this toon, your original idea was way too abstract for my mind and I like abstract. This is cohesive and very original. I was actually waiting to hear a DJ talk over the transition between parts and tell us about a 45 minute commercial free block of rock.

I vote Tempie as captain of the tree house, can I get a second? I'll tell ya where we buried your Stretch Armstrong....

Nevermind. I just heard my dad whistle. Time for dinner, then I'll be back for some flashlight tag.

stretch armstrong
what was actually in that guy? we'll never know. nobody had the guts to eat it once we pulled him apart. not even cousin robbie. i thought about throwing a morning zoo sample in over the swing batter part but thought it would sound too contrived. we were at the pool the other day and they were blasting top 40 and i remembered how great top 40 sounded at the pool, made even the most hick puddle seem glamorous, but I was wishing for a morning zoo, some ludicrously lame but very much live DJ...

cul-de sac
i thought i'd commented on this already...but a ghost in the machine. i really liked this...and it's way better second time around. it's very american...VERY american...especially the transition to the chorus. this sounds like a teenage rock song...written and performed by a teenage angst rock band. i've got one of my own cooking as we speak. how old are you - it must be a menopausal thing.

menopause?
not for another 20 years! i'm in my child bearing prime.

i don't know about angst...i like to think of tempie songs as teenage tunes WITHOUT the angst, you know, looking back on it from the safe vantage point of a happy adulthood.

i went through the usual brit rock phase as a kid but the accent weirded everyone in FFA right out. so i accepted my lot.

Is it me or does this have a decent dose
of melancholy mixed in with the nostalgia?

I think I listened to this when it was "new" but forgot to come back and comment. It's got a very tempie pristine-ness to it that always gets to me. I know you said you're aiming for an angst-free reliving of adolesence (per your comment above) but the verses have a heart-string tug for me. Maybe that's more about me than the song--maybe not.

A great addition to the tempie canon, anyway.
