Description
DISCLAIMER: This tune has been uploaded before but with different lyrics and vocalist.

A month or two ago I collaborated with the lovely and talented Char on a piece called I Can't Sleep, about a new love affair and the pain involved. During the co-writing process I came up with a second set of lyrics, about the other side of the relationship. I toyed for a while with asking someone else to sing the "male" lyrics (I can hear in my mind Marc Tannoy's lovely, soft French accent) but decided to try it myself to save anyone else the embarrassment ;-) So, be prepared: this is my first, public singing performance (since I last sang Happy Birthday to one of my sisters).

In any case, as you will hear, this is not a nice man, and Char is doing well to be rid of him, no matter how much it hurts. He's such a creep he's giving her the bad news from a public phone booth. The soundbed is identical to that which Char sang over. MichaelJayKlein I am not but you might get a chuckle out of it anyway. At least it's not as depressing as Dismal Days ;-)

Lyrics

I Must Say Goodbye

Once, when we were young, dear
We danced across the sun, dear
We shared a lot of fun, dear
But I must say goodbye.

I promise I will call, dear
Maybe in the fall, dear.
I have a lot of gall, dear
So I may wait till spring.

One thing is for true, dear
I love only you, dear.
Try not to be blue, dear
You were more than just a fling.

If you meet a new love
Tell you what to do, love
Promise to be true, love
And make a brand new start

Try not to regret, love
That we ever met, love
Think of what you'll get love --
He'll mend your broken heart.

Someday you will see, love
You'll often think of me, love
Of what was meant to be, love
Before it fell apart

I know you hurt, I know you cry:
These things happen, so don't ask why.
Love is pleasure, love is pain.
Perhaps I'll pass this way again.

Once, when we were young, dear
We danced across the sun, dear
We shared a lot of fun, dear
But now it's just goodbye.

I Must Say Goodbye
So whether you realize it or not, you and Char are writing a musical or a rock opera. I love how the instrumental bed is bright and happy which is in strict contrast to the personality of the male character. A very good lyric. And while you are not MJK, your vocal makes the point perfectly.

So, my character's not bright and happy?
What makes you think that Andrew? Maybe he's playing it this way to let her down more gently: he really is a creep, but not evil. I'm happy you liked the lyric, and the way they were sung ;-)

Tell Her
I liked this song, especially the talking section in the middle. It adds a personal touch to the message. The guitar line is a nice hook too.

This is
great Richard.... now this IS a warm voice. There was a guy in the late fifties called himself 'The Continental'; he used to just speak the lyrics to songs with a continental accent and it was a very attractive sound. This really puts me in mind of him with that hypnotic bass baritone voice. Love the simple (almost Eastern) sounding backing and the lyrics too are great... really enjoyed this, cheers M

I am still reeling over Dismal Days...:)
Again, your stuff is always outside the box, like our friend Char. Very thought provoking and has a dark feel but in a lighthearted way...Kind of like the show, "Dexter".

Well, I hope you didn't slash your wrists
as Julian suggested. And they've been trying to squeeze me back into that box for years and years, hahaha! But best of all, I love the concept of lighthearted darkness. Thanks Chris.

Richard!
You sounded marvelous on this--never underestimate your abilities, that's ridiculous! You know, I could not sing something in this style like you. This is a very catchy song, even as dark as it is (ala "Mack the Knife" maybe?) Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Aw, gee, shucks, Michael: thanks. It took much filtering, pitch correction, and effecting to get here, but it is one take (#136 maybe). I'm happy you think it's darkly-catchy or catchily-dark ;-) and I'm sure you can sing in any style you choose.
Thanks.

your voice sounds excellent - do not hide it behind a bushel. Agree with PD on the Yellow comparison. A good thing.

So you're saying, Kevin, I should take OFF the basket next time I sing? Thanks for the tip, man ;-) See above for filtering, etc. Maybe without the basket I won't have to do so much work after.
So, now I REALLY have to check out Yellow. Thanks bud.

Grooveee!
Hey, this is cool!! I'm really digging the percussion and the vocals reminds me of a bit of Mike Patton when he was in Lovage.

I haven't had the pleasure yet of hearing the other rendition but this one is fantastic.

If I remember, the drums were created in Drum Core, which allows you to add all sorts of variation to the patterns.
You should check out "the other side of the story" as sung by Char. Click on the "I Can't Sleep" link in the description above.
Thanks for the visit and the nice comments. Cheers.

strangely hypnotic
very cool draw you in to the story lyrics and singing, to go with a really completely different style (tone) backer, this is pretty cool! Very unique. This works!

I'm happy it works for you jd. The backer was originally an instrumental which Char and I have had fun singing two sides of an affair over. Thanks for the visit and the nice comment.

Great idea
to compose two sets of lyrics. Lovely to hear your voice. Have you tried playing both lyrics at once? Maybe fading in and out of them?
Enjoyed.

richard13 said 2480 days ago (July 13th, 2010)

I think I mentioned that these lyrics were written in response to the first set (sung by Char). But, it turns out I somehow misunderstood that her original was about the pain of NEW love, not that she'd been rejected. So, while this second song is related, it's sort of a bastard cousin ;-)
I tried your idea early on (when I first wrote the second lyrics) in the mixing process but I couldn't make it work. They weren't written to be sung together and I think have too much narrative each to be faded like that. And if I mixed them as a call/response kind of song, it would be far too long. It's fun to think that it MIGHT work but it would take a better producer/mixer than me.
Thanks Len.

always appealing - just listen to Little Green Bag and the music of Jimmy Yancey. It's all the same. I love this track with it's little surprises. A fave,

i LOVE the bass line!
...and the beat is hot too--the break, the lyrics--everything :) even though your genre is Romantic, the beat has kind of a hip-hop flavor to it to me. i'll have to check the other versions to see if you've got a hip-hop remix :)

Sickly delicious
I love the work on this and the vocal treatment is perfect for this son-of-a-bitch.
I like the kick drum hits in this. Sounds like a strange thing to pick out of an entire mix but this is so full that is seems to act as an exclamation point to the whole piece. Almost like a hammer hitting her over the head.

Richard
healthy groove for me to be in right now -
awry - so much - and yet still together -
various atonals still jive with the bass - with such divorced tone colors - and the vocals are neat - like frank zappa - I.M.H.O.
the percussion was a good choce to say the least - thanks !

Hey Rich... Your vocal performance herein is nothing to be ashamed of. Nice job! Also very clever of you to let us in on the other half of the "conversation" between the characters in the two versions of this track. Three thumbs up my friend!

Be well!

richard, i know you're being genuine here....especially about your fears over the vocal...but to people who are unaware of this... this comes across as something very weird, artistic and uber-cool. it reminds me of mikkilund on here...you might like him if you don't already know him.
anyway, i'd love to hear more in this style...i dig stuff like this.
