Description
I needed to get rid of some tension. Catching my breath after a crazy couple of weeks.

Pretty much left this as I played it - warts and all. I only fixed a couple REALLY bad notes, the rest are all still in there. I did play this to a metronome but as you will hear, I didn't always stay with the metronome.

Haven't really thought about doing anything else with this...maybe I will. Song art is Rembrandt.

Really great to hear you let go and just play
I hear little elements of Philip Glass in the left hand work - and a strong yet abiding pulse running through the piece that I like a lot. Definitely post these improvs whenever the urge strikes - it's music at it's purest.

now that I'm doing so much orchestration, I tend to immediately start thinking about what to add to my piano improvs. It was nice to just play this out and let it be. Thanks for stopping by Kevin.

I remember that painting....
I used to live in the Fenway, in walking distance of the Gardner Museum, where that painting hung... It was stolen in 1990... But it's one of the ones that I actually remember...

This has a neat flow to it, Shay.... a nice in-the-moment quality to it... and some subtle dynamics... It's very alive....

Thanks for your great comment. I have to admit to not knowing much about art but you're right, this Rembrandt is definitely memorable. As soon as I listened to the recording of this piece, the title and Rembrandt's picture came into my head. Obviously a work of art that strikes an emotional chord with a lot of people.

Lovely
Lovely piece. Leaving it mostly as it is shows the strength of your playing and the composition skill. Maybe you should have named it 'Up in the air'?

Bravo!

well how lovely to see you here! lol....leaving it mostly as is, to me, shows all the places where I flubbed, but there is a freedom to posting it this way - and a realness - that gets missed when I spend weeks working with a grid and fake instruments. thanks for listening!

So do you feel better, now that you have gotten it off your chest? I can sense the emotion in you, coming out on the keys, and quite effectively. This is a nice piece, and very well played. Good job, Shay -

i feel much better. i think for a lot of pianists, playing energizes them. for me, most of the time, it's a form of meditation that I use to relax. my favorite way to play is in a dark room with my eyes closed, matching my breathing and body movements to the rhythm of the music i'm playing. it's usually not anything complex or memorable, but it works for me. and then other times....lol....i do something like this! more commonly known as 'pounding'. thank you for your kind words sig.

What a delightful way to let off steam
[smirk] warts and all. I'm almost sorry you weren't more tense: the tempest went by so quickly I didn't notice any warts. Thanks for the d/l: I'll listen more carefully ;-)

i pretty much destroyed my left arm and hand playing this, having to control those fast, constant chords underneath the melody. I don't think I could have played any longer if I wanted to. that's what 'repeat' is for on your music player. :D thanks for coming by richard.

Liar?
I like being called charming. But you have never watched me struggle to lay down a bass track to a drum loop or click track (30 takes and I should have it). Point is, my internal metronome is not nearly accurate enough to catch when you strayed from your metronome. So I was in fact speaking truth when I said I missed those parts.

This is so going into the ipod. I am already looking forward to when it comes on while I am driving. The entire song I was envisioning the world moving past me while I was driving. It just speaks to me that way. This is gorgeous Shay, and the tempo "expressions" are perfect. I am glad you left it this way.

I'm so glad you like this! I've become too dependent on "fixing" my playing once it's recorded and sometimes just need to let it be the way it was born. thanks for your wonderful comment and i'm thrilled you want to take a copy with you.

Gentle tempest
Yes, that's a fruitful way of letting off some steam. Your piano sounds very organic and has a very nice range - what samples are you using if I may ask?
Glad you posted this, it's always enjoyable to listen to a well-known MJ figure playing just piano without (your equally excellent) midi bells and whistles.

well this is where it all starts for me, and i have to remind myself that sometimes the music can just stay this way. on this piece I just used the Apple jampack Orchestra Steinway in Logic Express with a little reverb and EQ tweaking. I have found that the most effective way to make my piano samples sound good is to actually decide on a sample and use that sample when I do the playing/recording. My fingers react to what I'm hearing and I adjust accordingly. If I change the piano sample after the fact, all the minute differences of that sample stand out because i wasn't playing to/with them. does that make any sense? anyway, thank you for listening and saying nice things to me. :D

doesn't often come better depicted than in the painting.... but it's certainly here in the way you're playing this.... there is tension there alright, but great to listen to and I trust you found it to be very cathartic as you 'got it out', regards M

Sometimes, you just gotta let it out
and there is no better way I know of that this, Shay.

We missed you last weekend at the get together in Greenville. There was talk of you maybe coming to it, but alas, it was not to be. I would have loved to meet you as would my Jeannie.

About the music, I love the relaxed way you just let it all out. It's good therapy, and good music. So it's a win/win situation. You feel better and we feel better too.

Very nicely done Shay, thank you for posting it so we could share it with you.

Spontaneity
It can be so magical sometimes, losing yourself in the moment of creativity; throwing yourself off the cliff of your own censorship and just soaring, carefree, through the skies of your own imagination. Be it writing silly little poetic song comments on the internet, throwing paint on a wall or - in your case - pulling these beautiful melodies out of thin air.

Just magical.

Nice improv...
around that descending set of chords. Tempest, yes. Now you gotta take this beyond those chords and explore some new territory, too. Close your eyes and just go for it. Your instincts will take you there.
(On another number, I had mentioned the muffled piano sound, as did others. It is not something that distracts me particularly from the performance, but it's very definitely there. Some of the crispness of a real piano is being lost by your choice of plug-in.)
