Loveless & Dead W/Brian Delaney remix

Description
On the previous version of this some people said they found the vocal too wet...so i sent a drier version to brian delaney and he put some mellotron string accompaniment to it.

he wrote in his email; The "you're flying" bit at the end seemed very Beatley to me, so I gave you a proper Beatle ending. Your guitar track has some sort of weird backwards sounding thing at the very end of it. That inspired the backwards cymbal....which inspired the tamboura drone...etc. Everything I added I felt was based on what was already there, mon frere...

Lyrics
The deal is done, a new chapter’s begun
And we’re sitting outside in this pantechnicon
The neighbours wave and you say goodbye
But all I want to do is get out and cry
And turn the clocks right back to another time

And I always thought we were part of the same place
Flying through time, hands that turn on a clock-face
All good things seemed to be within range
But it just goes to show how people can change
And turn into all the things you never liked about your parents
Now isn’t that strange

And I followed you blindly into this idyll that you created in your head
And it all came back to remind me that everything about us was loveless and dead
Loveless and dead

You left town in search of some worthy career
But the lack of confidence meant that I stayed here
And the loneliness kept me constantly in touch.
But I always got the feeling you didn’t miss me that much
Empty mailbox, empty days, empty glass of soda and scotch

And I tried hard to put it all behind me
wipe the slate clean and move on with my life
And I sent cards but I knew you’d never come to find me
And when you didn’t, it cut like a knife

And what i did, it made no sense, had no reason or rhyme
And the scene comes back to haunt us both, time after time
And what I did, I did as someone out of his mind
So maybe "forgive and forget" is too much to hope for this time
Maybe too much this time

And I followed you blindly into this idyll that you created in your head
And it all came back to remind me that everything about us was loveless and dead
loveless and dead.
You’re flying....you’re flying....

Loveless & Dead W/Brian Delaney remix
Julian and Brian collaborating! Straight to the iPod. This is such a beautiful song benefiting from a much cleaner and clear mix. I'll be honest. I didn't download the previous. The clipping in the vocal just ruined it for me. But this new mix is a must have. I love the mellotron.

Splendid work!
This sounds wonderful Julian.

Nicely judged accompaniment. Vocals have been brought out very well (perhaps a little too much in that final "I followed you....." section?) Lyrics are excellent and playing is spot on.

Cheers

Dick

dramatic improvement
to an already fabulous song, Sooooo much more organic, your voice is like butter Julian, this dry vocal captures the emotion of the lyrics much better end let's us hear your wonderful voice so much clearer.
Brian, very classy tasteful touch here, kudos for keeping your additions subtle and perfectly effective.
Julian, you are gifted, you inspire me to be better .
This is what macjams should be all about, friends enjoying each other's art.
I agree with Andrew, an instant download and honestly I've only downloaded a handful of songs, there is very little music in the world that I enjoy anymore, and I typically try not to listen to sad songs but I write them, and this is just so damn well written and with such precision.
From one singer/songwriter/strummer to another, this song and your last are two of my favorite songs anywhere!!

I meant dryer vocal
not as wet...not as much reverb, well you know what I mean, it's not dry.... it's butter!
Like the little bear's bed, it's just right, oh never mind! You know what I mean, it's better. butter better...
Okay I'm gonna shut up now!

Sounds super good to me! It is a perfect Sunday tune. Your words always paint that perfect pictures. The added strings give it that extra texture and depth. Youz a smooth operator.

I like..
most of the changes and additions to this. I went back and listened to the original and now realize what was probably meant by the term "wet". It seems the reverb or delay on the vocal was a touch to much. It also seems to have a peak eq around the sibilance range that needed to be backed off. Which may have been caused by the reverb or delay. I actually like the dynamic range of the original. I like this one too, although I am afraid to my ear it might have gone a bit to far in the opposite direction. It sounds a touch over compressed, and that is all I mean by to far. The additions Brian made musically were perfect. This song is markedly better for his touch, although compared to the original it has lost some of it's dynamic range.
Peace

Loveless & Dead
All the things Brian did to enhance this work sound great, but it is the song and your vocal performance that make it special. With that said I think your original mix was just as good. The strings are a nice touch, as are the little nuances and tidbits at the end. I think your ability to write a song that does not need a ton of production (by saying that I am not in any way implying that this is what this has turned into - everything Brian did here is tasteful and subtle) to sound good is a special gift, and you have that gift, Julian.

Yes, the accompaniment
is very nice. It adds an entirely new dimension to the song. The vox without as much reverbe are better for certain. It's very kind of you to sing this one in Amerglish. You should put out the Limey version as well. That would be fun.

Great song Julian!

Good song
I don't think I heard the original, but the vocal & guitar sound fine here in their relative amount of ambience.

Personally I would lose some of the mid/low frequencies in the vocal. It booms a little. But mostly it sounds quite nice.

Great version
I loved the previous version too. This version is absolutely great but IMO, most important is, the song was already good with just a guitar already.

Words
Whilst appreciate the playing, recording and arrangements it's lyrics that usualy attract me first to a song. "You turn into all the things you never liked about your parents"...wish I'd written that one!! oh and "Forgive and forget maybe too much this time"...ouch I can feel that one! Inspiring. Cheers Mark

pretty and right on
great lyrics, not a word misplaced. love the 'soda and scotch' line. great phrasing too, and i like the dry vocals, your voice is good on it's own, no need for affects. lastly i really like the 70's adult soft rock feel of this, i'm a big fan of that genre, could have heard this on the transistor at the beach as a kid.

Excellent
The mix is balanced and the drier vocals are more true to the lyrics - no effects, honest and straightforward. Guitar sounds great, and all the subtle additions like the strings work great. I like your idea for the ending - unexpected and cool. Solid songwriting, vocal performance and mix, by any standard and that's no easy feat!

to dry
Hi lovely song. Listened to the other mix, yes weird stereo effect going on as well in the reverb.
This is to dry. Try a Insert Reverb on the Vox track with a 5-7ms pre-delay, Reverb Time 1.00 -short, then introduce wet mix slowly 8% then back off pre-delay if needed will tighten up! This just needs a touch.

as I said before..
..the dryer vocals really bring out your vibrato; the delivery of the line "someone out of his mind" in particular stands out as very powerful, but the whole vocal track in general has this greatly communicative quality to it. The strings are a nice touch too, as if they're evoking the sense of movement experienced by the other character as a counterpoint to the narrator's story.

A must-have, amazing tune.
Brian's the king of the dry vocal mix, you can't go wrong with his oversight, right? Interesting departure in the mix but no matter the final product, the songwriting is so very poignant and the performance is just this side of wrenching. Julian, you've really got a hit here. Really an amazing song. NO DOUBT ABOUT clicking the download button. Thank you so much.

Still great!
Hmmm... by the looks of my original comment here, maybe I did listen to the prior version. This is a bit crisper and with some beautiful little details added. Still a great song in any mix iteration.

BTW Mark Holbrook's forum praising this song prompted the revisit:
