A Little Bit Baroque

Description
I wanted to try out something in the melodic minor scale (I think that's right--melodic is where you don't diminish the 7th, right? It's only a half-step down from the 8th and final note of the scale. Man, I need to brush up on my music theory. Geez.) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAYS, I was interested in putting something together that used baroque-music type chord progressions, with a backbeat and some pop-y stuff. This is the theme that resulted. I tried putting some harpsichord arpeggios at certain places, in keeping with the "baroque" theme, but GarageBand dropped whatever darn notes it felt like dropping, thank you very much, and it sounded comical. I think that will be the first revision when I get a keyboard.

Oh, and I think it's funny that the beginning of this song kind of sounds like Rush's "Tom Sawyer", because I've been ranting and raving for years about how much that song gets on my nerves (no offense to anyone who loves it--it certainly is a well-crafted song. Just a personal taste thing.) And now I go and make a song that sounds just like "Tom Sawyer" in the intro. Go figure!

The photo is Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina in July of 2008. It is really appropos of nothing.

Rush takes some getting used to
And yes, I do hear a vague similarity in the opening, but it quickly heads in a new direction. I think the drums are a little loud... I also think if you switched to a more gritty industrial drum kit (with more variation), and slowed this slightly with more synths and less trumpets, you'd have a very cool darkwave piece. As it stands now, I like it, but it feels like it is on the crossroads, not sure what it wants to be when it grows up :-) I would either go ALL orchestral, or go ALL synth, but that's just me.

When it grows up . . .
. . . ah, yes, not sure yet! I absolutely agree that the drums need to be toned down a bit; I was really noticing that this morning. I'm liking your "darkwave" suggestion--hmm, that might have some potential! Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful and insightful comments and for the listen!

A little Bit ...
I like the way you put here together some cool dance beats with classical motives. Reminds me of some Vanessa Mae's pieces. Good work on this catchy tune!

Thank You
For the listen and the comment! I want to start making my own dance beats gradually, relying less heavily on the loops, for sure. Cheers~ :)

Groovy
Oh geez, I know absolutely nothing about music theory. I just know what I like, and this is it!

Very cool Dance beat, kind of 80's feeling, which I love. I can hear this taking a darkish turn, that would be very interesting!!!

Darkish, maybe . . . .
Who knows how this one will end up? But I'm liking a lot of the suggestions I'm getting here, for sure! Thanks for the listen and your comments Raven! :)

Old meets New
This reminds me (for some reason) a bit of the music Vangelis did for the movie "Blade Runner" (although I've not seen that picture in years--so I might be a bit off!). Good job on this Cort! And yes you are correct about the melodic minor scale (music theory never came naturally to me, but I remember this).

Man, I haven't seen "Bladerunner" in YEARS, so I have absolutely no recollection of that film score. Dang--now I'm going to have to go watch it again. Thank you for stopping by and for your comments--and the note about the melodic minor (I was wondering about that--thanks!). :)

Horns
I was really tickled that you dug the horns, because I hemmed and hawed on those, like, "Well, I don't know about those . . ." Thank you for dropping in and your comments! :)

that I'm reminded of Vangelis for Blade Runner but more because of the meld of old with futuristic sound. Thanks. :)

Hey
That's really cool. I really like the progressions. The transition from minor to major and back again makes for some interesting flow; it travels from dark to light tones and back again. Nicely done.

Wait
isn't a melodic minor when you diminish your returns on investments in a major pentatonic sort of way!? LOL

Ok... I don't know which scale is which... I be a hacker... This is very very very cool even if it isn't in the right scale!! (but it really is)

tsk tsk
Mark my words, only a music major would know about melodic minor. But this wordplay, on a scale of 1 2 10, simply shows I am more clef'er by half notes, and make those who listen quaver in their staccato heels.

Cool stuff
In general a very pleasant track.

Coupla nits.

The low strings interfere (for instance 0:09 and 0:14 or thereabouts), which is fine in the intro, but later it muddies the sound. When you bring in the other instruments: start cutting all the low from those strings.

The fluty synth (flute?) and the piano start their riffs with almost the same notes. Not elegant. Please resolve that clash.

0:55 brass stab: beautiful.

1:08: handclap-y snare: not.

Around 1:20 there is a mid/low sound that muddies up that nice piano part. I can't make out what it is, but it bothers me.

But overall: good stuff.

Thanks so much!
Awesome feedback! I really appreciate your insightful and VERY helpful comments. I am so indescribably sick of not having a real keyboard/synthesizer that I won't be doing anything with any of my songs until that situation is resolved, but I will come back and implement your suggestions when I do make improvements. Thanks so much again! :)

The cloud of unknowing
Really don't feel very qualified to comment. Enjoyable, however, though it would take a nuclear strike to get me jumping around these days! The flute and piano unison issue i can hear, but the melody itself seems an interesting contradiction to the general mood, bringing a sort of soothing undertow to the otherwise energetic movement of the piece. In that sense it seems symphonic (really out of my depth now) bringing dissimilar elements into a coherent structure?

Phew! i need a couple of paracetamols after thinking that hard.

Now i need a nice tune to listen to....

Nuclear Strike!
Ha! I TOTALLY get that nuclear strike comment--I feel the same way about music these days. I love lots of it, but to get REEEEEALLY excited is a rarity nowadays. I'm so glad Victor pointed out that piano/flute clash issue--I'll be working on getting that resolved eventually. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, insightful comments and for the listen. :)

Peace,

Cortney

Clap Clap
I've been listening to older stuff I did over the summer lately, and I wonder what made me so darn fond of the hand clap. It's strange how one's preferences change over time; now I completely GET the criticisms about hand claps. They are dumb LOL.

Thanks for listening though, I was very surprised to see a new comment on this song! Glad you stopped in and took the time to comment, not to mention listen to some of my previous things. Cheers!

another cool track
really liking this one. other than the EQ things that Vic mentioned, the only thing that doesn't appeal to me is the horn stab. but that's just me. I think the song is really well thought out, and sounds very good for the most part. just discovered your stuff after you commented on my song, glad to have stumbled across you.

Soundbed...
I'd really like to hear what you could do with some harmonic lines flying out of this cool rhythmic track you have created. I GET baroque, just not enough of it. You do have some cool chord changes here, ESP. When you march UP the scale. Throw in a melodic instrument over this whole thing and I think you'll be surprised where to would go.
